TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — New Alabama basketball coach Anthony Grant has his first signee.
Grant announced the signing of point guard Ben Eblen from Melbourne, Fla., on Wednesday. Eblen initially signed to play for Grant at Virginia Commonwealth but was granted a release from his scholarship after the coach left to take over the Crimson Tide program.
The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder helped lead Florida Academy to a 25-1 record last season. He averaged 10 points, eight assists and four steals.
Grant said Eblen brings skill, selflessness and competitiveness to the team.
Eblen will join the Tide’s four fall signees, guard Charvez Davis and forwards Chris Hines, Shawn Kemp Jr. and Tony Mitchell next season.

For a point guard those are not bad..really. Look at their record....Look at his ball distribution and defensive steals. Point guard just needs to score enough to keep defenses honest so they can't drop back and clog middle.

As for your general complaint about GVX news coverage the last couple of days-- welcome to "the doldrums".
Hopefully the Lady Vols softball team makes the college world series. If they don't, then there's not much to report about UT sports between now and when the new freshman football signees arrive on campus in late July.
Lady Vols track is doing great, though. Congrats to Sarah Bowman, Phoebe Wright, et al. Both the men's and women's tennis teams are pretty good also.
Maybe firing Todd Raleigh will generate a few stories worthy of reading. Hear that, Hamilton?

The kid was one of the nations top unsigned Point Guards and one of the best players in Florida. Rutgers, St. Johns and VCI all offered. Hey, 8 Assists and 4 Steals a game is great! There weren't but four players in all of Florida (Jr. high AND Sr. high) that averaged 8 Assists or better this year. So if he can do half of that in the SEC then he'll be among the leagues best in both categories.
As a comparison, our incoming PG, Melvin Goins averaged 4.9 Assists and 2.0 Steals per game.
Calathes at Florida led the SEC in Assists and was 2nd in Steals and his average was 6.42 / 1.89 per game. Tyler was our leading Assist guy this year and his average was 3.35. BMaze was second on the team with 3.21. So Bird, our Small Forward, had more Assists than our Point Guard. J.P. led the team in Steals with 1.52.
So don't poo-poo 8 Assists and 4 Steals a game; I wish we had a PG that could do that!
