WR Prater says 'opportunity at Tennessee is perfect'

Kyle Prater

Kyle Prater

Kyle Prater sees an opportunity to help Tennessee in 2010.

The 6-foot-5, 205-pound wide receiver from Proviso West High School in Hillside, Ill., took an unofficial visit to UT on Saturday.

Prater, who visited UT with his father, said the Vols have an opening for him to play immediately.

“The opportunity at Tennessee is perfect,” he said. “If I come in and work hard with my talent, athleticism and work ethic I’d have a chance to go in and play right away.”

Prater said he spent most of his visit with UT’s coaching staff.

Prater said he talked to UT coach Lane Kiffin about the impact Prater could make on offense.

“Their offense is fluid,” he said. “It just moves. It’s a great offense that gets receivers the ball, and the offense is a pro-style offense to get you ready for the NFL.”

Prater said the experience of UT’s staff in the NFL would increase his professional opportunities.

“That’s why you’d love to be in that type offense,” he said. “The offense will get rolling and get you ready. That’d be perfect.”

Prater is looking for the perfect environment for when he decides to leave home.

Prater said he’s already visited Illinois, Michigan, Notre Dame, Iowa and Oklahoma. He said he plans to visit Southern Cal on Aug. 10.

Prater said he’s decided on two official visits this fall: USC on Sept. 5 and UT on Sept. 12.

That’s when the Vols will host UCLA at Neyland Stadium.

Prater said he plans to make his decision by the middle of his senior season so he can graduate early and enroll in college in January.

Prater said enrolling early should help him earn playing time as a freshman.

“That’s a real big advantage,” he said. “I’ll get to come in and go through spring ball and come in during the offseason workouts.

“It’s big to get to come in and work hard. You’re guaranteed nothing.”

UT already has commitments from two Illinois prospects: offensive lineman Zach Fulton from Homewood-Flossmoor High and receiver Matt Milton from Mascoutah High.

Prater said his father, Johnny Prater, often talks to Fulton’s father, Glen Fulton, about UT.

Kyle Prater said he doesn’t expect his decision to be affected by Fulton’s commitment to the Vols.

If it's the opportunity to play early that appeals to him, then what better place to come than tennessee??

You can guarantee that he won't be able to start as a freshman at USC, so him taking an official visit there doesn't bother me that much

Exactly. We have been, "Punter U" for too many years now.

I love that this kid is hyped about UT. I hate that USC is our competition. W/ CLK yet to coach his first season and show his O to the nation, it is hard to compete against USC and what kids see year in and year out. I think it is a testament to the coaches ability to recruit that these top prospects have us so high. It will get much easier if we can be competitive this year and reach a bowl.

You must not have read this story very well. We will know before Feb. 3, 2010 about Prater as the story said he plans on making his decision mid-season so he can be on his college campus in January.

Usually it is the quarterback that determines the other skill players that sign in a class, but if things continue to go as they have in the last week, the wide receivers in the Class of 2010 could end up swaying a QB that seems to be headed elsewhere at this time.

Or maybe the coaches are telling these receivers about a QB that is already in the fold, but they are sandbagging some of the opposing coaches.

uh yeah because Florida hasn't been recruiting the last few years. lol! Certainly if UT lands this kid thats a big get for them and a potential game changing playmaker down the road, but come on, Florida's defense is already "sick". Florida already has QB's. Florida already has WRs. The same goes for Georgia in recruiting along with LSU and Alabama. Now will this put Tennessee on a more even playing field with UF and UGA in the east? Certainly, but trust me, both those programs aren't going anywhere and while UT's 4 and 5 star guys are freshmen, UF and UGAs will be juniors and seniors.

belayvol,

His 40 time is 4.5 not exactly afterburner speed, but he could/should make the more difficult catches with his height !! Most d/b's in the SEC have an average height of 5'9... I like the odds of 6'5" against that any day of the week.

I will have his you-tube video shortly, you decide if he can make it.

Dont underestimate Georgia. I keep reading where so many are writing them off this year. Joe Cox can play QB and at RB UGA has recruited 10 blue chip RBs a year so as was the case when Moreno took over (nobody knew who he was) someone else will step in and continue that production. Be real surprised of UGA finished worse than 2nd in the east.

As for Tebow and Spikes, yeah they are seniors but for as much as many outside Florida hate Meyer, they can't deny that the guy knows how to recruit and how to have the pieces to "reload". I know most in here roll their eyes when John Brantley is brought up, but as many will start to find out this year the kid can flat out play QB. Is he a fullback throwing the ball like Tebow? No, but thats when you will see the offense become more pass oriented. And when Spikes leaves, there is beast in waiting Jon Bostic. Now will they be national champions? Maybe not, but in the two years that Brantley is at QB, at least one of them they will go to Atlanta, i'd put money on that.

Whether Tebow makes it in the NFL or not will not matter to recruits down the road. Spurrier his entire time at Florida never had a QB make it big in the NFL, yet every year top QB prospects from around the country wanted to play at UF. When you look around the country, there are MANY schools who are not producing quality NFL QBs or haven't in a long time....Ohio State, Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Georgia (up until Stafford), LSU (Jamarcus Russell about as good as Alex Smith) ect.. Can you tell me that those schools still arent getting top highschool QBs? WRs? ect. Heck, look at West Virginia, they run a spread option and don't produce any type of NFL QBs yet a QB like Brunetti didn't hesitate to commit to them. Fans look more into the NFL angle than most prospects do.

Yes I've seen where some UT recruits have mentioned the "NFL experience" angle. But this is not the NFL. Anyone who thinks college football can be coached and run like the NFL is not going to have much success (Charlie Weis, Bill Calahann, Mike Sherman). Secondly, with me personally, I've always been leary of kids who talk about the NFL when they are still in highschool. To me it comes across more as an individual looking to get his own and not a team player. Just my opinion.

As for UT becoming USC east. Sorry but that isn't ever going to happen simply because Tennessee does not have the in state talent that USC has, its not a knock on UT, just a fact. Yes Tennessee will bring in top talent from around the country, but to expect the depth that USC can continually add simply by walking across the street and getting a 5 star player UT cant compete with. For every 1 or 2 5 star players UT gets from another state, USC will pull in 10 from their own. Just the way it is until someone else in California steps it up to compete with them.

How beautiful would it be if UT came in 1st and USC 2nd, and Prater’s reasoning is that he wants to play closer to home! I am getting tired of prospects (football and bball) turning us down because of the distance from home
