Despite cast on wrist, Gerald Jones says he'll be ready

Receiver Gerald Jones was supposed to be limited in fall camp. Not so on Tuesday.

Jones was practically a full participant during Tennessee’s three-hour afternoon practice, which marked the beginning of fall practice.

Yet Jones wasn’t his old self. A brace on his surgically repaired left wrist saw to that, causing the junior to drop three passes.

“That’s three too many,” Jones said. “One is too many for me. I’m going to find a way to keep catching balls with this thing on until it gets off.”

That should come in two weeks. Jones expects an easy transition once the cast is removed.

“Catching is what I do,” he said. “If I didn’t have this (cast) on, I think I wouldn’t drop a pass at all. That’s my mindset.”

Yet with the cast, things are a bit different.

“I’m still not supposed to drop any but it’s going to happen so I’ve got to deal with it,” said Jones, who still punishes himself with 10 pushups after each drop.

Jones’ nagging off-season injury certainly was disconcerting. No receiver caught more passes than Jones last season. And the Vols have been hit hard by injuries at the position.

Junior Denarius Moore is sidelined with a foot injury that will likely keep him out until late September. Senior Austin Rogers suffered a torn ACL during summer workouts.

With two upperclassmen sidelined, leadership during UT coach Lane Kiffin’s first fall camp is at a premium.

“We commend him for it,” receivers coach Frank Wilson said of Jones’ participation. “That’s the leadership we’re looking for — is to lead by example.”

Wilson said it was as critical for Jones to show UT’s younger receivers how to act as how to catch.

“He’s a good example for our young kids,” Wilson said.

Jones even surprised himself. It was his first workout since the first week of June.

“I really thought I was going to get out here and be sloppy with my feet because I haven’t ran any routes,” Jones said. “My feet impressed me. I was quick on my toes.”

Jones said he’ll be limited in some more physical drills later this week but expects to be released by the time the Vols start contact Saturday.

I am not surprised to hear this. Dave hooker is a horrible "journalist" and does not correct himself when he is proven wrong. No integrity. I pointed out an numerical error he made last year in a story and he responded unprofessionally and did not correct the story because it would have negated his headline to the story. Loser par excellence!

I wish I could figure out what y'all are talking about. I listened to the Adams interview and it seemed to my ears to be pretty fair...you might not like him saying "no one in his right mind expects TN to be competitive in the Swamp this year," but he sounded to me as if he expected them to be competitive the next time they go to Gainesville.

Then again, I may not be in my right mind. I do expect them to be more competitive than some think.

Did Hooker say something? What and to whom?

Actually it was Dave hooker. It aired on the afternoon version of sports center. It came on after the Albert Haynesworth report for the Redskins. It really makes me angry for a KNS guy to rag our team. To paraphrase him he said that we were a team more closely related to a Vanderbilt or Kentucky rather than a Florida or Alabama. I was so steamed after that report that I wished that I had not seen it. How could you even bash our program like that? If I were Coach Kiffin I would not even allow you anywhere near OUR team. Everything that was taught this offseason to the team was completely mis reported by our own citys sports journalists. I guess anything to make yourself heard huh Davey boy. You are a joke.

Ok here is a little learning tool for you. Just because a writer covers a team or a university, does not mean he is a fan or that he has to be a fan. Its called objective journalism. You think because he writes for Knoxnews that he has to only report and give opinions on the positive things regarding Tennessee? lol! This is one thing Im still trying to figure out with some of you Vol fans...you want a website full of Vol fans holding hands and singing praises to each other and writers that only say good things about UT. And the second that is broken, you go crazy. As for his so called comment regarding Tennessee being closer to Vanderbilt than Florida...well lets see

Vanderbilt (won a lower tier bowl)
Florida & Alabama played in BCS bowls

Tennessee (sat at home)

Heck based off of that your lucky he didn't say closer to Mississippi State, because at least Vanderbilt went to a bowl game and won.

Do you honestly believe that Hamilton is going to come out and say, "I have since told Lane Kiffin to keep his mouth shut."? No AD in the country is going to publicly throw his coach out like that. So just because you didn't hear that from Hamilton, doesn't mean it didn't happen.

well even if that is true, that doesn't give Hooker the right to go public and trash our coach. He should show some loyality and support our team. RIGHT

True.

Anyone seeing the debacle of 2008 knows we have much larger problems (one large one gone at least) than agonizing over jersey color.

Leave the jerseys alone and get a better product in them.

When a journalist has an agenda, as do Adams and his lacky Hooker, objectivism ends. Clearly, you do not get that.

No doubt some on here display the reactions you mentioned, but, since I don't spend any time on other teams' fan sites, do you really think UT fans are any more sensitive to that sort of thing than any others? Don't most fans expect their local media to boost their team, and get annoyed when people question their team, coaches, etc.? Personally, I can take a little objectivity, and think the type of fans you are describing are being unrealistic, but, really, do you think we have an unusually high percentage of those?

I thought the same thing! I'm not a doctor, but push-ups don't seem to me like the best possible therapy for an as-yet-unhealed wrist injury.

OK here is a little learning tool for you. If a Gainsville reporter published an article paintng tim tebow in a negative light for something like, lets say, kissing a teammate on the sidelines of a game or someting crazy like that. then, time after time bashed coach um for having player after player arrested. i would bet some UF fans wouldnt like that reporter very much. do ut fans know were are down right now, yes. is our new hc trying to rebuild the program, yes. do we need an UF fan on here telling us were not very good right now, no. UT PLAYERS NEED THIER CONFIDENCE REBUILT AFTER LAST YEAR. it will all work itself out on the field anyway. btw, ut isnt going to be as bad as people think this year. heck if fulmer would have let hardesty and creer run the ball instead of trying to get foster the rushing record ut would have won at least 3 more games last year. UCLA, Auburn and (ugh) Wyoming.

Well, I don't hold Dave Hooker in low regard to the degree with which you do, but he does have more problems spelling Vol players' names once they're no longer just "recruits". ("Quinton" Hancock, for instance, and "Aaron" Sears, also. Dave-- it's "Quintin" and "Arron"-- get it right. Teams have official rosters online so that you can check these things.)
I did get a kick out of Mike Strange's comment on Hooker last January:
"I resolve to not think of Cowboys fan, Yankees fan, Celtics fan Dave Hooker merely as a bandwagon-hopping dynasty-worshipper. Even though last week I overheard him on the phone ordering a Manchester United jersey."
