Tennessee receivers coach Frank Wilson said he was impressed after watching Tuesday's first practice with freshmen receivers, including Nu’Keese Richardson, Marsalis Teague and Zach Rogers.
“A lot was thrown at them,” Wilson said. “It was their first collegiate practice and to withstand it and practice the way they did, to be able to take as many reps as they did and to be consistent is something to be commended.”
Teague seemed to be the standout among the freshmen on Tuesday, making a handful of impressive plays.
Former Catholic High School athlete Daniel Hood began his UT career as an offensive lineman.
Sophomore receiver Todd Campbell has switched jersey numbers from No. 11 to No. 85, which will allow freshman tailback Bryce Brown to have No. 11, which he was wearing on Tuesday.
Jones said he was impressed with several freshmen.
“Marsalis Teague did a great job at three different positions,” junior receiver Gerald Jones said. “He made great plays at all three positions. Another player that impressed me was (tailback) David Oku. And I’m not just saying that because he’s from my hometown. He did really well today and I’m proud of him.’’
Jones and Oku are from Oklahoma City.
QB Chatter: Few players are more excited about the beginning of fall camp than junior quarterback Nick Stephens, who missed most of spring practice with a broken right, throwing wrist/hand.
Stephens got plenty of work during UT’s summer workouts, but admitted that preseason camp is different.
“We had a good tempo in the summer but the tempo has actually picked up now,” Stephens said. “Everybody is flying around. Coaches are flying around.”
Senior Jonathan Crompton said it doesn’t feel like August because he and teammates are having so much fun. The fun stopped when a reporter asked Crompton to compare last season’s preseason camp to this year.
“I don’t want to talk about last year,” Crompton said flatly.
Weathered Men: Defensive end Chris Walker admitted that the heat took its toll, as he had to pull himself out of the lineup for a handful of plays.
“Got winded a little bit,” the junior said. “It will take some time getting used to. Once we get into football shape, we’ll be fine.”
Walker said the cool summer in Knoxville followed by a hot, humid week to begin preseason camp had an effect.
“I think it affected us a lot, just mentally,” Walker said. “Physically it kind of drained us a little bit. The sun was beating awhile and it was kind of humid out there.”
Vol Slices: Jones, junior safety Dennis Rogan, freshmen defensive backs Eric Gordon, Nyshier Oliver and Mike Edwards and receivers Richardson and Teague all returned punts. ... Zach Rogers was wearing No. 21, the number his brother, Austin, wore 2005-08.

stable of WRs? are you kidding? Gerald Jones is our best WR and he's more of a quick twitch athlete. He's got a cast on his hand, Moore is hurt, and Warren was a TE last year.
our WR "stable" won't be what it needs to be until Ambles and Milton get here (and hopefully Prater or Cobbs).

did we get a QB from a baseball team and if so how does he look? don't see anything about him but then again I am in MO and not much but the web to fall back on. What is the status of the JC QB transfer(Lamison?) is he up and going now or is that 2010?
MikeTheTiger writes:
Hey Dave, probably a good idea to let us know who "Jones" is BEFORE you start quoting him. Keep trying, you will get it.

Yeah.. Mike Rozier..
He wore #18 today at practice.. Kiffin said he had some trouble with plays today and getting the snap count down.. But that would be expected considering it was his first practice with the team..
Also , Juco Nick Laminson did quite well.

get in football shape?...what the hell were they doing all summer?
Phowell23 writes:
He probably meant the demanding practices, in the summer they were doing workouts not practices. Two different things. Takes a few weeks for them to get back in the football practice mode in the hot summer heat.

Guys, I don't think we are aware of what we are in for with this staff. We have been so accustomed to having players slowly brought up to speed and allowed playing time that I don't think we realize just how dynamic we can be at the receiver position THIS year. Believe it or not, this years freshmen corp is going to contribute in a dynamic way. Richardson and Teague along with Oku and Brown in the slot is going to give our offense the big play threat on every down. If our line comes together like I think they are, our offense is going to give opposing defenses fits THIS year. I know, I know, I've heard it all before. We have no qb and our offense last year was terrible. Just wait and see, this years squad will look, act and play nothing like last years team. NEW YEAR, NEW STAFF, NEW PLAYERS, NEW MENTALITY, NEW RESULTS!
Here's to the Kool-Aid,

no...it doesnt...I played football and baseball in college...we were killed in the summer so that we were already in shape when fall started. Same goes for winter workouts...so we would be in shape when spring started. Im the biggest UT optimist out there..but I couldnt stand Johnny Long..and Ausmus is a product from the same teachings. I know Ausmus came in late but seriously...they werent even in pads...they should be in shape

Stephens had a great practice, first pass a TD to Teague, Crompton's series 1-4 and he had a fumbled exchange- that sound familiar- Stephens keep your foot on the pedal and be the QB, he has the leadership, arm, moxie, smarts and dog gone it people like him

What??!! "Once we get into football shape??"
Son, you are supposed to SHOW UP in August in top "football shape." What have you been doing all summer?
Fall camp is NOT about getting into "football shape."
GoVols57, I'm with you. Summers workouts are suppose to be he[[ for the express purpose of showing up for fall camp in tip-top "football shape."
Running all summer (most of the time in helmets and pads) with 15-lb. weights around your ankles, maxing out in the weight room, pushing yourself to the extreme outermost limits of what you think you can do...and then pushing a little more...
THAT'S what I think of when I think summer workouts...
Chris Walker's comments worry me.

CaliVol2009 writes:
You clearly have never been an athlete in your life and obviously have no clue. What the players are referring to is called "feel". They have not had a football practice for over a month and a half. You simply do not just get right back into football "shape" right away. It typically takes a few practices to get back into the groove. In the future try to have some semblance of a clue what it is like to be an athlete. You don't just simply go from non practice workouts to full workouts without working off a bit of rust. In the future try to use your brain. I know you have probably never done anything athletically of any significance in your life but try to understand that you have no idea what you are talking about.

You can just tell from the way Kiffin is talking to Stephens in the videos that he is his man. It may not happen this week(which is fair) or this month but #17 will start.

Denmark Dude, football is not something you can over prepare for. There is nothing like simulating blocking, hitting, twisting, turning, etc. of football. You can go through the motions but there's nothing like putting on the pads (maybe they haven't done that yet) and going at it against competition fighting for playing time. Your comments worry me, actually. No, actually, you live in Denmark. Watching on youtube is hardly being there. You guys don't play sports there do you? Futbol, maybe? That' s a different sport.

The weather is cool and rainy; East Tennessee is experiencing one of its mildest Julys in years. Berry is concerned.
"I know it's going to be hot and humid for camp! I know it is! Wait and see," he says.
Unquote.
This would add to the "football shape" problems one would think.

Seems to me like for as long as I can remember, when we've been picked in the preseason top 15 we've usually underachieved, but when we gets no love we've always overachieved. I think we're all gonna be pleasantly suprised this year. Come on KICKOFF!!!!
MidTennVol writes:
Berry was asked on ESPN (I think it was ESPN) how many wins it would take to make this season a success.
His immediate answer: at least 10. That's exactly what I've been saying all year. I don't see us winning AL or FL but, if this coaching staff is real and our playmakers stay healthy, 10 wins is certainly realistic to me.
Am I nuts?

Have you guys really never heard this type of "coach speak"? Just a typical response to a question from the media. However, summer is the time that the players focus on gains in size, speed, playbook knowledge, and agility. August is when you start running football drills and running football plays to get back into football shape. It's kinda tough to practice 14 swim moves at full speed against a 300lb OT in May, unless you are goin cow tippin, or hoggin on a Saturday night.
