Majors likes what he sees from Kiffin at UT

MURFREESBORO - Johnny Majors isn't ready to make a prediction on Lane Kiffin's first season as the football coach at the University of Tennessee.

One thing, though, is certain: Majors expects a much improved team if it plays the way he has seen the Vols practice under Kiffin.

"I have been on the practice fields some," said Majors who was the keynote speaker Wednesday night at the Riverdale Hall of Fame ceremony held at Stones River Country Club. "I was there (Tuesday) and four or five times last spring.

"I can tell you they know how to practice. I think 70 percent of coaches don't know what you can get out of full-speed coaching on the practice field. I strongly believe that they know how to practice and are doing a lot of good teaching and have a lot of energy."

Coming from a Volunteer legend, that's awesome!

Very good read. And I cant wait to hear that CJM is going to be 1 of the former UT football players, to lead the team in the General Neyland’s MAXIMS!!!!

LiveFaith writes:

That was good ... "You've gotta be pretty bad not to win @ SC". True.

There is a lot of excitement around the Big Orange. Yesterday on an ESPN radio show the hosts asked Takeo Spikes (former Auburn LB) what he thought of Auburn's chances this year. he did not say much about Auburn and then without being asked he said that Tennessee was the team to watch out for!

RockyTopVolFan writes:

Good Ole RockyTop, RockyTop Tennessee...hmm pardon me in my excitement! I love Coach Majors getting back on the field, he is a Great Tennesseean. The excitement for our season ahead is palpable in our house, and I hope yours too! GO VOLS!

How awesome would that be?

Reading between the lines, Coach Majors' comments sounds like a dig at the Fulmer style of coaching.

Still have pictures from that game. Narrow seats and a awed 12 year old son are part of my memories. And a Tenn speedster on a long jaunt down the sidelines.

Johnny was , just Johnny.

I don't imagine many tears were shed in Huntland (?) when FHCPF was shown the gate.

It has gone full circle. The ones who ran Fulmer out were the ones who ran out Johnny in the early 90's. Well... they love Johnny again. Your time will come around again Phil.

Agree, he should do it on the first game, 29 days or so, cant wait, go orange.

As much as I used to really like old "Johnny" remember that everything he says is to make anyone but Phil look good. He is in fact a bitter old man who still can't get over what he did to himself nearly 20 years ago. I wish him peace but don't trust a thing he says.

Saw a lot of great wins under coach Majors. But the 41-3 beat down of Florida and Stevie boy in 1990 was really fun. The reverse tight end touchdown pass to CP was great.

You know Johnny had his time and didn’t make the best of it.
He didn’t win a national championship at UT.
Phil had his time and won a national championship at UT.
Those two were great coaches at UT.
But who cares what they think.
They did not hire Kiffin.

pms151 writes:

Now that Fulmer is gone the UT athletic department , uh, KNS , is going to finally start quoting Majors? What a joke. He is one of those 70 percent he speaks of.

PMC2726 writes:

Majors sounds like sour grapes every time he speaks to the media. Stick a mic in front of him and he will likely make some kind of back handed jab at Fulmer. Let it go Johnny -- there's a new sheriff in town.

Didnt Fulmer call that play?

knoxtenn writes:

Majors is a great character, but I don't take a word he says as credible on the issue of the head coaching position. He's biased against Fulmer, perhaps for good reason, and of course he's going to build up Kiffin.

I love Majors as a character, but I don't believe for one second he would ever have brought a nat'l championship here. Fulmer may not have gotten the job under the best of circumstances, but he did win our only national title in nearly 60 years.

Fulmer's time passed. He needed to go, and Coach Majors would do best to be classy on that subject- he's an icon. Let's see what the new guy can do. I'm skeptical, and hope I'm pleasantly surprised.

Von Reeves to Carl Pickens, geat play. Score was actually 45 to 3 but it was still a beatdown.

the running joke down here in fla (among us Vols, of course) was...

"when it's 2:15 in Knoxville, what time is it in gainesville? oh, yeah, 45 to 3."

looking forward to those days again, soon.

45-3. Want more fun? I was with my UF cousin over in Clarksville, TN at the time. He had to get up and walk out. He couldn't stand it. Doesn't get much better than that.

Johnny, remember to look at and focus on the middle image when you talk to kiffin.

reidtownriverrat writes:

everybody loved ole Phil in 98 he done pretty good for a few year. He brought rocky top their NC not Majors. He let down in the last couple seasons and made a mistake with Dave C, at the end of the day he was good for BIG ORANGE do you agree?

Hey whats the deal with those freaky Texas A&M retro stripes on the jerseys...? Are they there for the season? Instead of the black jerseys?
