In a practice at least 10 years old now, the team will again this year stay at a hotel on the Friday nights before home games, Tiffany Carpenter, UT sports information director, told me this morning. She said that's about $96 a room, with two players to a room. In all, they occupy about 55 rooms, she said. That's roughly $42,000 a year, but that does not include incidentals and meals. "Depending on the time of the game, you could have 3-4 meals there," Carpenter said in an e-mail.

A billion here, a billion there, pretty soon you're talking about real money.

No kidding. What a stupid story. Now I really want to know how much do they spend on band-aids annually? NOT!!

This is nothing new. Majors did it, Fulmer did it. Can't get the same affect on campus since there can't be any true athletic dorms any more.

wow! what a breaking story! now if we could just find out how much ut spends on t.p.

If you assume they could reduce student ticket prices if they didn't do this, it is about $1/ticket/game less for students.
The point is, is this practice the best use of money for the program. I don't think so. It all adds up.

Which Kiffin? . . . Kiffin Senior, Kiffin Junior or Kiffin In-Law?
FearlessFreep writes:
What a non-story. Yeah, the $42k saved would go back into the 'system?' No, UTAD would spend it elsewhere - their budget is completely separate.

Good point. Lots of other big-time football schools do the same thing.

There should be enough money to cover this since they took the hotdog away from the ushers at BB games.

UT will have plenty of dough to spare when Kiffin starts bringing us titles! This is just peanuts!

Agree, and the players would nit be as focused if they were on campus.... Go Vols!

Yes...

No. 1, why is this news?
And No. 2, Tiffany Carpenter is NOT Tennessee's sports information director. In journalism school, I seem to remember that not getting someone's title right was called a "fatal error."

It is more than 10 years. Majors and the team used to shack up at the motel on the corner of Ceder Bluff and I40/75 in the early '80's. I was managing for Wendy's at the time while going to school and worked that store for a few months. The team and coach Majors came in several times late on Friday for dinner.
Keeping it Real
Go Vols!!!

Florida decided to do this so their players won't shoot anyone the night before. The crime went down 100% ever since.
Alabama does this too at the request of local pig farmers who couldn't get their hogs to mate anymore.
South Carolina does it too but just to give their players a break from pumping gas the night before a game.

Not sure if this passed the revelance test.
Along the same lines of import, I always wonder how the band members make it in their outfits setting in the sun.
