Memphis names Corral as pitching coach

Memphis baseball coach Daron Schoenrock said he "hit a home run" with his hire of Fred Corral as the Tigers' new pitching coach.

Corral, the former University of Tennessee pitching coach, replaces Mike Federico, who departed in mid-July to become pitching coach at Southern Miss, his alma mater. At Memphis, Corral will be Schoenrock's associate head coach, in addition to handling the pitching staff.

"Fred will have a huge impact on the pitching staff, the entire team and this program,'' Schoenrock told The Commercial Appeal.

Corral, 43, was dismissed by second-year Tennessee coach Todd Raleigh after the season. Raleigh cited "philosophical differences.'' Tennessee went 26-29 in 2009.

Corral joins Memphis after his second stint at UT. He also served as an assistant at Oklahoma, Sacramento City College and San Joaquin Delta College.

Congrats to Chief!!
CDS looks to be a bit confident in himself to bring CFC as associate HC. Chief was more of a coach here than TR anyway. Philosophical differences were CFC knew how to coach, teach, discipline, care, and win. Those are different descriptions.
Looks like he will have the same type of battle as he would have had here with the pitching. Bet he has a bigger impact under a confident coach that will let him work and not mind melt his staff.
Good luck CFC!! I am now a Memphis fan.

The best of luck to primo and the tigers. He replaces a very good pitching coach in Federico. I'm sure shoenrock didn't expect to have such an upgrade after losing Federico. I think that pitching staff is set up to do some great things this spring. I'm excited to see how they do.

Those kids at Memphis are going to learn quickly what being a warrior truly is. Congrats, Freddy. Teach the boys to have no fear of contact and LTFF!!!
