Memphis baseball coach Daron Schoenrock said he "hit a home run" with his hire of Fred Corral as the Tigers' new pitching coach.

Corral, the former University of Tennessee pitching coach, replaces Mike Federico, who departed in mid-July to become pitching coach at Southern Miss, his alma mater. At Memphis, Corral will be Schoenrock's associate head coach, in addition to handling the pitching staff.

"Fred will have a huge impact on the pitching staff, the entire team and this program,'' Schoenrock told The Commercial Appeal.

Corral, 43, was dismissed by second-year Tennessee coach Todd Raleigh after the season. Raleigh cited "philosophical differences.'' Tennessee went 26-29 in 2009.

Corral joins Memphis after his second stint at UT. He also served as an assistant at Oklahoma, Sacramento City College and San Joaquin Delta College.
