ESPN.com reported Sunday night that Tennessee wide receiver Gerald Jones could miss significant time to start the season after suffering a high ankle sprain in Saturday’s scrimmage.
Citing a source close to the team, ESPN.com reported Jones could be out four to six weeks.
Jones is the most experienced returning receiver. The Vols’ junior had 30 catches for 323 yards last season.

This is, of course, only bad news if we really believe that our QBs will be able to hit receivers this year.
I want to believe. Trust me I do.

High ankle sprains are the ones that effect the whole stinking season too. Well, let's get ready to see Warren, Hancock and our freshmen burners!

opportunity for a freshman to step up and show up. Wish we had him healthy... on the early end of that prognosis, he could possibly make it back in time for Florida. Epsom salts, compression chambers... it'll help him out a lot.
surfmaster writes:
Why do we always have to reply on ESPN for updates. Why doesn't the paper try replacing some of their "columnists" with reporters, you know, the guys whose job it is to find out just what the h@ll is going on. On the brighter side, VolQuest is reporting that Scroggins is considering visiting UT this fall for one or two visits. Thought he was solid to USC.
smashmouth98 writes:
not good. you could tell when it happened that he was in pain. he did walk off the field with the help from the trainers. that means more playing time for Nuke & Teague!!!!
DMSVOL writes:
This is a nagging injury the impacts the player's season. Maybe he'll be back in 4-6 weeks, but he'll not be the same. The agility will be diminished. I agree with mbible1utk#324980, all you freshman get ready, you just got a chance to play.
KiFFiNOMiCS writes:
Just our luck.....time to make some freshman into sophmores in 2 weeks time.
utFootBallFanatic writes:
Ok so two weeks till kick off and three weeks till florida. That is five weeks..... Perhaps if our trainers do a good job we could get him back in time for the swamp... Dont forget about moore comeing back for florida. He has the talent to be a great reciever. we will be fine at the wide out spot....
darandkat writes:
Pete Carroll has given Corp until Tuesday to get back to practice if he is to compete for the starting job. With Barkley possibly being named the starter, Scroggins probably does not want to sit behind either Corp or Barkley for four years with a chance to play one season. Coming to UT gives him the chance to compete for playing time immediately! This is worth watching to see how it plays out. I think we have a great chance to get him if in fact Barkley is named the starter.
flytnn writes:
Well that sucks!
I saw it happen yesterday and didn't think it was high ankle the way they were working on it. I thought it could be a 2 week at most injury. Maybe it's just an agenda to throw Florida off and he comes back that game along with Bryce Brown!

Tough for the young man.
At least Hancock is having a good fall.
So far.

If anyone has volquest, this looks like it could be interesting article about Scroggins might take another visit to knoxville in the fall.
Lakewood, California quarterback Jesse Scroggins flirted long and hard with Lane Kiffin and his Tennessee Vols before eventually choosing to stay closer to home and play for Southern California. Thanks to prospects like Jacques Smith, Scroggins is at least toying with the idea of making a visit or two this Fall. For more, checkout Volquest.com.

I hate this for Gerald. He is one of the few who I thought played his heart out last season. The good that may come out of it is that some depth is built in rec corps in his absence. CLK will have to handcuff him to the bench to keep him off the field vs. the gators. Get well soon Gerald. Go Vols!!
Gator_Hater (Inactive) writes:
Don't sweat it. If he does things right, he could be back for UCLA, almost definately Florida. I'd feel alot better if Bryce is on hand to give us another receiving threat. The Scroggins bit doesn't surprise me either, I give us a 50-50 chance on landing him. February is still a long ways away.

Dang! Another injury to one of our experienced receivers. He better suck it up & be out only 3 weeks because we don't need him for the Western Kentucky. We definitely have to have both Jones & Moore back on the field for the Florida game. We may end up needing Jones for the UCLA game if things start to go bad for us. But that's a BIG "if." At least it's just for a short time frame. Richardson & Teague need to step up now. We definitely need someone explosive to fill in for Jones while he's injured.

Of course we aren't ranked this year. That would be foolish to rank a team that was 5-7 last year. It doesn't mean we won't be ranked after the first month of the season. I expect UT to finish the season in the top 20 and hopefully in the top 15.
rusty_shackleford writes:
Brilliant! The KNS has one team to cover yet gets scooped by ESPN! And they can't understand why people are fleeing the paper. Don't worry, the Chosen One will probably bail out your dead industry too.

Sorry, wrong UCLA, this one is University of Challenged Learning Abilities. I can see where you would confuse the two. You think challenged learning abilities and you think Alabama

I see the scenario setting up for the emergence of two superstar wide receivers at Tennessee, out of the same mold of Joey Kent and Peerless Price and they are NuKeese Richardson and Marsalis Teague. I hate it that Gereld is hurt but I sure am glad we got these recruits in this year. Watch Out, Here they come!!!!!!!!!

Well in his/her defense , their jr. high teacher probably hasn't gotten to elem. English yet this year.

Wes Rucker, who was at the scrimmage, reported via Twitter that the team believes Jones will be back by UCLA. Rucker watched Jones post-injury and did not think it was a high ankle sprain. Look for Jones to be on the field by week two.

Halls3 writes:
Not to be a bringer of bad news but if this is truly a high ankle sprain he won't be 100% all season. Remember how Percy Harvin was gimpy almost all of his college career b/c of the injury he received as a freshman. Even if he & Moore come back neither will be 100% for basically the whole season so it's up to the other receivers to come through for UT. I guess this will completely eliminate any chance for a G-Gun Package & leave Nukeese in control of that assuming they do it.
