In reversal, beer to be sold at Memphis Tigers football games

MEMPHIS - In an effort to reduce the projected losses at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium this year, the City of Memphis has decided to sell beer at University of Memphis home football games, beginning with their Sept. 6 season opener against Ole Miss.

The stadium was projected to lose $261,000 in general operating costs before the decision. The beer sales are projected to net $260,000, said the city's chief administrative officer, Jack Sammons.

I like where this thread is going.

Such as, this thread is never going to Memphis lol

I do like the Rendezvous though

Beer? Football? What an interesting combination. I'll have to try that.

unfortunately, my ex-wife drug me here 13 years ago from Atlanta...got 3 kids though, and that is the only reason I wouldnt want Memphis to "slip into the Mississippi river"...and other than the Rendevous, and some beautiful women in places, nothing here worth keeping...lol

Can't we just give Memphis to Arkansas and let them deal with that place?

There is a loophole in the NCAA rule for stadiums on campus. It doesn't say anything about it being given away.....then pay with tips....

Of course we would have to revise......"we urge you to pay these prices and please...pay no more...."

Never thought I'd see Memphis come up with a forward-thinking idea.

Still remeber walking up high (pun) in the old Orange Bowl to watch the Vols vs Canes. Had chugged several Killian's in the Cubano yard we parked in.

Rounded the next to last turn, and vahalla!

Miller Light sign lit up.

A good time was had by all. City of Miami property, not Hurricane U.

Finally, somebody has come up with a good reason to serve alcohol at an NCAA sports game. Bravo, Memphis! You are whittling away at the national deficit one by one. If only UT could adopt this idea, with a few more fans who like to drink a lot more, we could fund maybe a few more professors and not have to do away with Audiology dept. you think??

Hmmm... Memphis? Isn't that the city where all those murders happen on that show," The first 48"! Please don't push'em in the river, I love that show. Go vols!

Tempting, but not quite enough for me to become a Tigers' fan. It's bad enough having to watch out for the good ol boys who keep on trying to pack heat on Beale Street.

I can't help but think that this is partly because they just had to give up their share from the Final Four that got stricken from the books. Perhaps you can thank Calipari for beer sales at Memphis football games.

HollySpringsVOL writes:

Who cares! Those who want a snort of the good stuff will just bring it to the stadium, like we have been doing for the past 90 years or more. Mr. Daniels is a lot more appropriate for a football game in Tennessee than Mr. Budweiser.

Cheating the SAT to play B-Ball, Drunkards throwing cups on the field, and multiple casinos just 30 miles away. Not exactly what you'd expect in the Bible belt, is it? What next, strippers on Beale?

Possible mistake by Hamilton -

Keeping Foolmore one more year as an excuse to sell beer at Neyland. Because that is about that it would take to beat another Foolmore coached team.

Good riddance Foolmore.

beat = bear

I guess I couldn't help but think about what would happen to another Foolmore coached team.

Good riddance Foolmore.

That would certainly improve the atmosphere on Beale!!!! Maybe even strippers at the half-time show.

My son and daughter-in-law just fled Memphis to Grenville, SC. It's the number 2 city in the US for crime (in general), black on white crime and drug sales. I would rather live in Afghanistan than Memphis. You're safer there. The city officials and police are...well...figure it out.

"In an effort to reduce the projected losses" Are they talking about games or revenue? I wish they had beer sales back in 1996 when I sat there in the freezing cold watching the worst game I have ever witnessed in person.

I don't have much of a defense for my school. But I do have some points:
1. To correct a couple of misinformed posters here - the Liberty Bowl is owned by the city of Memphis. The decision to sell beer is the city's decision. The university is against it. The money won't being going to the school.
2. According to TBI statistics - the campus at the University of Memphis is safer than the campus at UT.
3. Our football team sucks. But they did beat your Golden boy Peyton Manning. UT by 4 points over the UofM this year - at the most. It'll be closer than you think. I'll be there. Why don't y'all come to Beale St. on New Years Eve for the big basketball game?

After 21 years, 11 months, and 3 days, I left Memphis and moved back to East Tennessee. I hope it's as close as I ever get to knowing what it feels like to be paroled from prison.

Memphis likes to put up a good facade -- but behind the facade is a city full of poverty, crime, poor education, crime, unwed teenage pregnancy, crime, and backward attitudes perpetuated mainly by transplants from the Mississippi Delta. Michael Lewis' excellent book The Blind Side wasn't so much about football as it was about the blindness of many prosperous Memphians to the sadness on every street corner and in every neighborhood.

I'm glad to be home.

thebadsamaritan,

Your comments aren't even close to accurate. Either you live in a bubble or you are drinking coach Cal's drink of forgetfulness. UT vs. UM in campus safety is not ranked 1-10 or 1-100. Stats are given, but I would not brag if I were you, and thankfully I am not. Where UT has a total population of 35k, UM has roughly 20k. Therefore, get this... UT has 14 - total assault charges versus 65 for UM. Now I am not a betting man, but I probably won't get in the crime log as quickly in Knoxville as I would in Memphis. Oh, UM has 2 weapons charges, UT = 0. So, assaults + guns + beer + plus one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S. does not over-ride the safety that one would find in the UT campus. You can check that at http://www.tbi.state.tn.us/Info%20Sys....

Go Vols.
