KNOXVILLE - Knoxville today announced it is repeating this year its offer of free parking at two of its downtown lots on University of Tennessee football game day throughout the season.
Parking at the Market Square and State Street garages will be free, beginning with the contest Sept. 5 with Western Kentucky University, according to a press release from the city. The policy will be in effect for UT's eight home games.
Patrons at other city-owned garages will have to pay on game days,
City officials apparently hope the free parking policy, first instituted last year, will encourage football fans to arrive early and stay late to take advantage of downtown shops and eateries.
Until last year all city-owned garages, which are managed by the Public Building Authority, had pay parking during UT's home games. The city deemed the free parking policy a success last year for showcasing downtown businesses.
The State Street Garage is located between Central Avenue and State Street with additional entrances on Clinch and Union Avenues. The Market Square Garage is just west of the square with entrances on Wall Avenue and Walnut Street.
Other pay parking opportunities downtown are available at the Main Avenue Garage, Dwight Kessel Garage and the City County Building Parking Garage.
From Downtown anyone can ride KAT's football shuttles to and from Neyland Stadium.
More details as they develop online and in Tuesday's News Sentinel.

Parked there many times last year. Didn't know it was a "special" deal. I thought I was getting away with something! Damn.

If you gotta pay, go to the Baptist Church lot, at least the $ goes to the youth mission trips.
Otherwise, if your cheap, park over near the TVA towers on the street, eat in Mkt Square and then walk over the bridge, then hike over the Hill and down to glory!
either way is solid until 2 hours before kickoff

...and I'll add this for the out-of-towners like me.... park at the state street garage for free. Short walk to the Hilton for a quick whiz and some A/C. Then a block to the Holiday Inn where a good bar and a good crowd is always rockin'. H.I. is a good place to snag a cheap Vol souvenir with the money you saved on parking. Then if you're lazy like me, you can get a cab to the Holy Land for about $5 bucks.
