UT's Jones awaiting father's funeral Friday

Tennessee associate head men's basketball coach Tony Jones remains in Michigan, awaiting his father's funeral Friday.

Clarence "Sonny" Jones was found murdered in Detroit on Aug. 18 after being reported missing the day before.

The Detroit Free-Press has reported that police have arrested 19-year-old Eugene Peguies of Detroit and charged him with first-degree murder and felony murder.

The accused was ordered held without bond in the Wayne County (Mich.) Jail.

"It's disheartening for anyone to be the subject of violence, but to take it one step further to someone elderly, that puts your stomach in knots,'' former Michigan and NBA player Jalen Rose told the Free-Press.

Tony Jones coached Rose at Detroit's Southwestern High School before entering the collegiate coaching ranks.

Tony Jones attended a family reunion with his father the week before the killing, and Sonny was honored during halftime at at Southwestern High School alumni game on Aug. 15.

Details on the case are still emerging. Sonny Jones, 86, was looking after the house of a friend who he had met while delivering Meals on Wheels when Jones was "ambushed,'' The Detroit Free Press reported.

The newspaper reports that police statistics show slayings involving elderly people were up 86 percent in Detroit the first six months of this year.

Tony Jones has requested privacy, but in an interview conducted with his family by the Detroit Free Press, he said of his father: "He was big-time. He didn't have to go like this.''
