Goins' transition to UT has been smooth

Tennessee junior college transfer Melvin Goins went through his first day of individual workouts Tuesday holding himself back from the competition.

A pulled right hamstring relegated Goins to mostly shooting and kept him out of the Vols' first open gym session.

"We were running the 100-yard dash Friday and I pulled up about 20 yards from the finish,'' said Goins, who's expected to compete with incumbent Bobby Maze at point guard. "I've never had an injury like this. It's just rest and ice because they don't want me to make it any worse.''

Goins said the transition to UT from Mount San Jacinto (Calif.) Junior College has gone smoothly.

"You adjust to the campus and the people,'' said Goins, who started his collegiate career at Ball State before playing junior college last season. "The weight room was an adjustment; my teammates were very intense. You pick up on it and go with it.''

Goins hasn't had a chance to experience much of Tennessee's student life outside of the class rooms and the basketball court.

"I moved my stuff in (Aug. 13) and went right to the gym,'' Goins said. "A couple days later, I got a run in with my new teammates.

"I felt real comfortable. Everybody came in and looked pretty good.''

Goins said the Vols have the right approach to competition.

"It's healthy, good spirited, and between the lines it's all business,'' Goins, 21, said. "Whoever lines up against you, they're not your friend at that moment. But once we're off the court everything is healthy and I've been welcomed in.''

Goins said he's looking forward to two things: The first home football game (Sept. 5, Western Kentucky) and the official start of full team practice in October.

"I've heard the football games are pretty wild,'' Goins said. "The other stuff, I've pretty much eaten in Gibbs Hall. I haven't really ventured off.''

Injury Update: Goins isn't the only UT player limited by injury or illness. Maze has the flu and is being held out. Josh Tabb is limited by an Achilles injury, Josh Bone has a quadriceps injury and J.P. Prince has yet to fully recover from shoulder surgery this spring.

Bone, a 6-3 walk-on guard who transferred to UT from Southern Illinois mid-term last year, won't be eligible until January.

Weight Loss: Brian Williams is down from 290 to 270 pounds, and Emmanuel Negedu has shed 15 pounds to 220.

Football is on most everyone's mind right now but I can't wait until B-ball season too. We are going to be hard to stop. Definitely a 20+ win season. Go Vols, Go CBP, Go CLK!!!!

Not if everyone is sick or injured. Looks like the BB team caught the FB injury bug.

If Williams would lose about 10 more pounds, he'll be a player for us!

Williams at 270 is pretty good. I doubt Prince will ever be totally healthy.

I saw Williams at the spring game, he said he was working hard. He said he was getting into the best shape of his life. Williams insisted this was really going to be his breakout season. I must say that he sounded sincere. GO VOLS!!!

Heard a flyer that JP could redshirt again. Since he's a transfer, not sure that is a possibility.

Yeah, he can drive the lane and score on the best of em when he is on his game and healthy. He might have the worst looking jump shot I have ever seen tho!

I don't want to talk bad about one of our kids but come on! I don't know why JP gets so much hype. ESPN always highlighted him in pre-game, etc. I can't believe it. He can't play D, can't make anything outside 5inches from the rim (unless he dunks it), and can't shoot in a tub. He can slice & dice but THAT'S IT! ... in a nutshell! He's not even one of the top 5 on the team yet gets all kinds of hype. Oh yeah, his attitude appears to not be in the right place either. I believe he creates dissention among the team.

The first time I remember Voldoll appearing on this board, she agreed with you. Yet you have done nothing but dis her ever since! You are a piece of work. I would be astounded if you were married, or had children who would speak to you, or had any friends who didn't owe you money!

Sh-t in one hand and plop your opinion in the other one and see which hand fills up first. You are a waste. Nothing you say matters. Man, that must feel awful to be so bitter and unimportant...

Dude, I normally count you as one of the more intelligent people on here. VolDOLL = TarHeelsTool. I thought that was well established. Who else would come on here and act like she was only a pawn for "her husband" and his cronies? Go read "her" posts and then get back to me.... No way a woman is that spineless in 2009.... If she's real, then I have a "member" for her sister's "club"...

Guess I missed that. Whatever, at least "her" comments, IMHO, had a certain balance that was noticeably lacking in THR's endless drivel. In any case, VOR's treatment of "her" was just so typical of the contempt he shows EVERYBODY on this board, I just couldn't let it go without comment.

I don't care what you or the other Pearl Trolls think. It doesn't matter. Your opinion is worthless and will never have any effect on anything to do with the Tennessee Basketball team. Deal with it...

No, he thinks I'm a kid and apparently likes to call kids names. Sounds like he has some real problems. But, I know you guys are real pals. Oh yeah, go read his disgusting comment on the article about Hoops for Hope. He likes to pick on kids and individuals that have Down Syndrome. Hmmmmm...

Watch the company you keep, it reflects on you.

You morons use the same stupid insult on everyone that disagrees with you or disparages you; all of you, the same exact one every time. You call us "kid" or "little boy", or "child". PLEASE come up with something else! If you're gonna keep bringing it, come up with something new, or else I'm gonna quit responding and then what will all of you do with your lives. Maybe pay attention to those children you speak of? Provide some teaching and guidance? Hahahaha. That's laughable. With parents like you, parental guidance might not be the best course of action... Maybe adoption...

No, actually it is you and the other Pearl Trolls that are getting old. I just started getting into it with you fools. You all have been on here for years! Pathetic! And the only ones that think my act it getting old are you idiots, and your opinions are worthless. I jsut want you to know that. WORTHLESS! Do you think anyone in the A.D. cares what you think? Really? Or do any of you claim to have "connections"? I'm sure they don't and I'm sure you don't.

Yeah, I'm the one that is not smart. Why don't you go post some more inflammatory comments about the team volunteering their time to be with kids? You are a terrible human being and, by association, so are your idiot Pearl Troll friends, as well.

See ya!
