Blast from Kiffin wakes up Vols' practice

The occasion coach Lane Kiffin chose to deliver good news to Tennessee's football team about Bryce Brown's successful appeal Wednesday was as a P.S. on the end of a chewing-out session.

Late in Wednesday's practice, Kiffin halted the proceedings on Haslam Field and circled the team. In clear terms he told the Vols he didn't like the way they were practicing.

Kiffin wanted to see more toughness and fewer complaints about injuries.

"We were feeling sorry for ourselves a little bit,'' he said later, "just going through the motions.

"We challenged 'em a little bit that last period and they responded well.''

Wednesday was the third consecutive long, hard practice. The Vols have today off.

"Every practice is mentally challenging,'' said quarterback Jonathan Crompton. "You've got to make sure you're prepared and you know your stuff and are on top of everything.

"Having three long ones in a row is tough. It's part of the game. It's going to happen. If people go to the next level it's going to happen there so everybody's get used to it.

"We're going to keep working our butts off.''

And hitting their butts off. Those were, in so many words, Kiffin's instructions.

"Aches and pains are just part of football,'' tight end Jeff Cottam said, "and you've got to play through them.

"I guess we were looking a little sluggish and he brought it to our attention.''

Perhaps buoyed by the news that freshman Brown is eligible for the season-opener, the offense responded with good execution in a four-minute kill-the-clock drill.

"The offense had two great drives to end the game,'' Kiffin said. "We've got to get better in our four-minute defense. That's about three times in a row we've done it and gotten first downs.''

Injury Report: Potential defensive starters Chris Walker and Marsalous Johnson are not practicing this week.

Kiffin said Johnson is expected back Saturday and Walker by Monday. Kiffin said Walker had to get a shot before returning.

Defensive tackle Wes Brown went down in pain early in practice. He was able to get up and walk off but watched the rest of the afternoon from the sideline.

Guard Vlad Richard also went to the sideline. Cory Sullins and Cody Pope each got reps at left guard in Richard's absence.

Cornerback Brent Vinson was sidelined by an eye condition.

New Tight End: Daniel Adderley, a transfer from Miami, joined practice this week.

Adderley is not on scholarship and must sit out 2009. The 6-foot-6, 225-pounder could play in 2010 and 2011.

He redshirted as a freshman receiver at Miami. He moved to tight end but did not catch a pass in 2008 and left the program last December.

Defense Notes: Cornerback Anthony Anderson had a nice interception on a ricochet of a Crompton pass.

Senior Dan Williams was back ahead of freshman Montori Hughes at noseguard with the No. 1 defense. Willie Bohannon worked with the ones in Walker's absence.

I hate that all these OL's are going down, but we will need some experience for our backups to help us next year. Having 4 seniors on the O-Line is great for this year, but horrible for next.

Sounds good... but Crompton has got to stop throwing INT's .. every report he has one.. those are game changing plays right there!

That Brown news has to make everyone feel better. First I've noticed that Adderley kid but 6-6, 225 sounds like Kiffin's kind of TE/receiver.

In Monte's 4-3 the line is usually shifted to one side, putting one of the DT's in the gap between the center and guard. Nose guard isn't always in a 3-4.

That's right, the tackle in a 4-3 that plays over the center gap is typically known as a nose tackle.

I feared that Wes Brown wouldn't be able to make it through October, now I wonder if he'll make it out of August. Is a Dan Williams/Montori Hughes front line a possibility?

Glad to hear CLK called the team out for being mediocre. The big boost from the great news about BB is awesome. It shows this is a team thinking about the entire team. Godspeed to McNeil and a quick recovery. Keep reading those bones WD. Enjoy the humor and insight you have.

How many bowl wins? How many times did we lose the SEC championship? How many times did we beat Florida? How many top 10 teams have we beat? You can only live off beating Kentucky and Vanderbilt so many years.

We shall see. It is a whole different atmosphere playing in an SEC stadium than out on the left coast. If you don't think so, ask Tedford. You all might win, but I wouldn't guarantee anything if I were you.

Regardless, it should be a great game. Monte vs. Norm. A true coaching clinic.

My exact sentiments here Nooga. What is the deal with all of that? Now it's an eye? He won't make the entire season for every game, good thing we have some extra talent at that position. I would bet that if he starts the first game that by the time we get back from UF that he'll be out. I hate that for him too. I've been hoping that since he went from offense to defense that he would be special. He IS if he can stay on the field!

Spent 4 days last week in LA for business. Was 3.9 days too long. Here's the local media take over that time period on this year's UCLA Bruins:
1) Special defense. Ranking it close to USC, in top 3 PAC 10 this fall. All American corner; strong LB corp and 2 bookend rush ends. Plenty of speed, lots of depth.
2)Offense is questionable, at best. No QB, one very good RB(out w/injury some last year but piled up yards in limited action) and an All-PAC 10 wideout. OL returns intact, but has not "jelled" to this point and is frustrating Coach Rick N.
3) Special teams: have All American place kicker, money inside 50. KR is one of the best in US. Can't recall mention of punting.
All in all, sounds strangely familiar to the Vols? Both: No QB, RB has potential but limited experience, OL needing to step up, AA in defensive backfield, defense is the strength; both kickers are money inside the 50, punting?; both have seasoned pro coaches on staff- Chow and Kiffin.UCLA does have an All PAC 10 receiver- some touting him AA. Interstingly enough, the media is stating the importance of UCLA coming out of the gate 2-1 heading into conference play in the 4th game against Stanford. The first 3 games are San Diego State, @UT and Kansas State. They are all listing UT as the loss.

This is the first I've seen someone conjecture at the longer term under Kiffin & Co, except for W & Ls. Sure, in the next 3 years some of those will be shaken up.
But,has anyone payed any attention to the resume's of this staff? Other than Monte (who is overqualified for his position), none of them have stayed anywhere long.
If CLK goes 9-3, then 11-1, then NC, (which is what some expect) then do we really think that he will be around long? I know Hamilton has deep pockets, but no way I see this guy passing up the lure of the NFL. When he goes, you can rest assured Monte is not going to try and kep his job with the next staff. If Orgeron makes it 2 years here it will be a miracle. The others will come and go as usual. If Kiffin wins a NC, and Pete Carroll leaves, do not think for a minute that they would not want their "native" son to return. The native son would jump all over it too.
If he goes 9-3, 8-4, 7-5, then all this is moot and the "Kiffin's unproven" naysayers will have their day as he is fired.
Chavis said a lot when he said "it's been a long time since a TN guy was sitting at the end of the table". I think UT fans have been spoiled with stability from Dicky-Battle-Majors-Fulmer. Whether we succeed or not with CLK, I'm afraid those days are over.
