QB Smith leaves Miami, considering UT

MEMPHIS - Former Olive Branch High quarterback Cannon Smith has left the University of Miami, and two Mid-South schools are under consideration to be his next destination.

The 6-foot, 205-pound Smith, who played in one game for the Hurricanes last year as a true freshman before getting hurt and receiving a medical redshirt year, exited Miami on Monday. Sources close to Smith, who starred as a senior at Olive Branch in 2006, said he is considering Mississippi State, Tennessee and SMU.

What Vols fans here mean to say is "We don't want a guy who's considering Miss State and SMU outside of us."

This is the info from Scout.

Verballed to Memphis early but changed his commitmment to Ole Miss. Ultimately did not sign with the Rebels after an off-field incident. Subsequently visited Hawaii and Miami before enrolling at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va.

Tahj Boyd isn't 6'0", and he couldn't win the starting job at Clemson. BJ Coleman will never be in the CFL let alone the NFL.

Ole Miss is doing pretty OK with their 'quitter' Jevan Snead. We should be so lucky.

He was a dope head. That is why he left the school in Memphis and why he didn't play for Ole Miss.

Thank you DaMan for saying you instead of we. For the first time you are admitting your hatred of UT. By the way the 3rd string is a whole lot taller then 5ft 9in. We only need one QB to change his mind and say yes. If that happens all is good.

OrangePride writes:

Less than 50% passing efficiency in HS senior year and a quit rather than compete mentality is not a good resume. Thanks, but I think we will stick with Lamaison and look for that blue chip prospect in 2010.

Hah. I called it, I was asking about him as soon as heard he was leaving since he's from Tennessee. We snagged Brown from Miami though and didn't attempt at this guy as far as I know, so why would we now?

keepitreal4vols writes:

Cannon Smith was the backup to the backup to a QB that couldn't beat out Marve. Miami seems to have more QB problems than UT.
He would just be buried on our depth chart unless our QB's are worse than I thought.

What is really telling is the caliber of teams that first recruited him!

HotlantaVol writes:

Transfer QBs rarely work out. There's a reason they have to transfer when 84 teammates do not. It might be a lack of smarts. It might be not being good enough to start. It might be discipline issues, but there is always a reason. For every Jevan Sneed there are hundreds of Brandon Stewarts. Pass.

cloudodust writes:

Cannon Smith, I'd like to introduce you to B.J. Coleman. B.J., Cannon. I'm sure you two have a lot to talk about so we'll just let you both slip off to a corner somewhere...

I'd like confirmation on that if he is in fact, and I don't think he is. Fred used to live in Memphis, not Olive Branch, MS and besides Fred is a pro Memphis State person and Pro football.. besides the above:

This "Smith" sounds too short and smallist to be player pro-style QB and probably best suited in the Spread. I'm concerned when I hear of drug use too in High School. Let Memphis State sign him, gosh they're hurting for players.

MrBamSeydu writes:

NOooooooooooooooooo!! We do not want this guy!!! We already have a perfectly suitable SCOUT TEAM QB in Nick Lamaison. We don't need 2 6ft QBs who are taking up a scholarship.

This guy couldn't win Miami's QB job, why should he be our QB? We don't need to settle for other programs scrubs.

TYLER BRAY, JESSE SCROGGINS (still a 4% chance he'll end up at UT), or CAM NEWTON.

lowman4vols writes:

Read the article and you will get confirmation...it states it there....IMO CLK will probably not look too close at Smith and stick with his own recruiting plan....yes he does seem to have a plan..patience Vol Nation, we will get a quarterback and he will be a good one....one that CLK and staff want.....JMO

Weatherman writes:

Maybe a different take, but we've been trying for years to get an in on all the recruiting talent west of Nashville...there is no larger influence than Fred Smith in West TN...you want an in...this might, just might, be that. Besides, it couldn't hurt to have another QB on the roster.

99,

What's up with this guy? 3 different high schools in 3 years seems a bit strange, especially since it is reported that he was dimissed from all 3 teams while others say he left on his own. He now attends Darlington (SC) HS about 15 miles from me. I see reports that say he dropped UF and some that say UF dropped him, what gives with this kid?

Uh, Memphis police wern't involved. I beleive his car was loaded with drugs...in Collierville,TN. But, his dad is the number one employer in Memphis, donates alot of money to the PussyCats (still does them no good) and his dad is a Notre Dame guy! STAY AWAY!!!!!

Patience, patience, its a long time until Feb.We signed the Juco QB for insurance and he may prove to be more than that.He threw for 3,000+yards and 36 TD's last year so I'm betting Coach K won't sign another QB unless he is top notch.Jesse Scroggins is having second thoughts about going to So.Cal.
