Lady Vols can't hold lead, lose to Arizona St.

The Tennessee Lady Vols were just seconds from a soccer victory in their opening match of the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic on Friday night.

But close wasn't close enough.

Arizona State rallied for a tying goal and then scored in overtime for a 3-2 win before a crowd of 1,207 at Regal Soccer Stadium.

"Give a ton of credit to Arizona State,'' UT coach Angela Kelly said. "There were a lot of little things that hurt us tonight like not being able to clear the ball out of our end with 13 seconds left in the match. If we finish more of our chances tonight, maybe it's a different result. But that's the game of soccer."

Emily Dowd and freshman Jayden Barrett both scored their first goals of the season for No. 23 Tennessee (1-1). Mick Imgram recorded a pair of assists.

It all looked to be enough until the Lady Vols couldn't clear the ball out of their zone and the Sun Devils (2-0) pounced with seconds to spare. Karin Volpe corralled a clearing pass and scored into the low left corner for the tying goal with 13 seconds left.

Volpe scored the winner in the 107th minute. She moved around a defender into the left corner of the 18-yard box and beat UT goalkeeper Molly Baird high to the right side.

"It was a pretty good performance, no excuses, but we are young and banged up a little,'' Kelly said. "Of course, I'm sure Arizona State's dealing with the same situation.

"ASU deserves the victory, and I'm proud of the way our team battled."

Tennessee midfielder Julie Edwards, who's been out with an injury, made her first appearance of the season and her cross helped set up Dowd's goal in the first half.

Barrett's goal in the second half was set up by Imgram's corner kick. Ali Hall headed the ball to Barrett, who scored on a header.

Lindsey Johns scored Arizona State's first goal.

UT plays Pepperdine at 3 p.m. Sunday. Arizona State plays Kansas at 12:30.

Kansas beat Pepperdine, 2-1, in Friday's first game.
