Bray to visit Knoxville this weekend

QB committed to San Diego State

Tyler Bray will take his official visit to Tennessee this weekend.

The quarterback from Kingsbury (Calif.) High School confirmed the plans via text message to the News Sentinel on Monday.

Bray, who committed to San Diego State in July, has been one of the fastest-rising prospects in the nation thanks to impressive showings at summer camps.

"I'm still committed to San Diego State but I'm making my decision after the visit," the 6-foot-6, 185-pounder texted.

Bray said he is only considering San Diego State and UT.

The Vols made Bray a top priority when they missed out on a handful of quarterback prospects who committed elsewhere, lastly Jesse Scroggins of Lakewood (Calif.) High School. Scroggins committed to Southern California in July.

Bray is considered a prospect with tremendous upside. Gaining weight will be a top priority for the slender standout when he enrolls in college.

Rivals upgraded Bray to the 229th best overall prospect in the nation and 14th best pro-style quarterback prospect when its list was revised in late July. Scout ranks Bray as the 22nd best quarterback in the nation.

definitly would be a good fit.... all you hear about this kid upside. 6-6 is awsome size. give him some happy meals to put some weight on. Let him and stevens battle for a starting job next year....that is if scroggins dosnt have a change of heart.

I've been on San Diego State's campus before... it isn't THAT nice! Take him over to Sweet Pea's BBQ and let's put some meat on his bones! The thing that seems to be costing him more attention is how lean he is. Oh well, Peyton was lean too before he came in. If he needs the extra year to REALLY develop, Nick can step in and give him that redshirt year to grow. I think we get him though... a bigger stage, better facilities, better training, a better team... better stadium and better fans. We've got what he wants.

Bingo! You sir are right on the money. The best thing that we can do, being the vol faithful, is make sure that he knows we stand behind our team.
If I am a player considering any school I am going to want to see how the fans treat the players. People are going to boo because they are what you said they are, idiots!
I cannot help but wonder how many of these top prospect QBs that turned us down may have heard about Crompton getting heckled by the fans at the practice we let the fans into back in the spring? Word travels fast.

We didn't get Scroggins initially because we drooled on Heaps too much.

It's time to revisit that kid in light of Barkley starting. With our receiver crew and maybe adding Prater and Cobbs....That's a nat'l title with the right QB.

Bray might be good, but he has slow lineman speed.

From the looks of things, he might be skinny, but there's nothing wrong with his arm. He's throwing it hard enough that some of the guys can't hold on to the ball. It looks like he has a slight tendency to have a low release point on short throws, I'd be curious to see if that's a problem when he's behind an offensive line, but I think if we bring him in, redshirt him for a year... feed him some of Tennessee's best, get him in the weight room with Aaron Ausmus... he's got a pretty strong arm. Not to mention that the scouts have been raving about his accuracy on top of that.

As long as he can take a 3 and a 5 step drop then I will take him. Peyton wasn't the swiftest either but he turned out OK.

You know the irony... he has more offers than Trey Burton who is committed to Florida... not to mention both Rivals and Scout are saying Bray is a better quarterback... and Trey Burton doesn't appear to have any awards. Might want to put those crickets on a hook and see if you can't catch a bigger fish before you start downplaying ours.

Not to pile on.... okay... maybe to pile on a little bit... Tyler Bray is compared closely to Austin Hinder (8 pro style on Rivals, 13 overall on Scout), Taylor Graham (13 pro style on Rivals, 24 overall on Scout), and Blake Bell (2 pro style on Rivals,2 overall on Scout). Trey Burton is compared closely to Tarean Austin (18 dual threat QB on Rivals, 66 overall on Scout), Kevin Spain (31 dual threat QB on Rivals, 57 overall QB on Scout), and Darian Stone (32 dual threat QB on Rivals, an unrated 1 star prospect on Scout).

some more interesting facts for our friend DC....

Chase Daniel was the 26th rated QB in 2005, only had offers from Northwestern, Stanford, Oklahoma State, and Missouri... how did he do again?

Nate Davis was the 31st rated QB in 2006, only had offers from Bowling Green, Toledo, Indiana, and Ball State.... how did he turn out?

Todd Reesing was the 63rd rated QB in 2006, only had offers from Kansas, Kansas State, and Duke. Somebody said something about him being a candidate for the Johnny Unitas award this year? Not with those scholarship offers, surely!

The fact is that this kid is coming in kind of like Erik Ainge did... a tall, lean kid... not the highest rated guy, no offers from the REALLY big schools, but he's got talent. Erik beat Florida his freshman year

Anyone catch the Elite 11 show on ESPNU? Bray barely made the cut - and then went in and showed out. He won the overall points competition and runner up MVP to Heaps. Scroggins looked rough. All the coaches thought Bray would be atleast a "NFL back up for 12 years" also "the most underrated QB out there". If he doesnt care about "being close to home" like Scroggins - he'll commit and be a star - book it.

He has a similar high school ranking to Sam Bradford. Sam Bradford was a rivals 3-star and ranked #12 pro-style QB. Scout had Sam Bradford as a 4-star but ranked #17 at QB.

Sam Bradford is projected as the #1 QB and likely the #1 pick in the NFL draft - probably at least 20 spots higher than Tebow. It's common knowledge that Florida QBs are losers and can't play in the NFL.

Is a low release point on short throws that big of a deal is he's 6' 6"?? Sure I guess it could be, but with a qb of that height, it sounds to me like it'd be something that caused a pass to get knocked down once in a while, and nothing more. Then again, I'm no football pro, just a pre-med student who's been watching football long enough to have a decent understanding of what's going on.

I totally agree but with his size and getting used to his size, IMO he is the best answer for now. I thought after viewing Crompton’s high school films he was another Schuler and he still might be, but time is rapidly running out with him. From what I read 2010 and 2011 have QB’s. I just don’t think there were that many this year with the size, arm strength, coaching, attitude, smarts, talent, and heart we were really looking for. Also we don’t have a proven big name QB coach recruiting them either. Time will only tell with Coach Reaves. Some really big, strong, FAST, talented, and smart offensive linemen will definitely help whoever is back there running or passing. It does look like we are getting blue chip running backs and receivers. Some of the puzzle is already there. If Sabin (Bama) can do it in 2 years we can too! This 2012 and 2013 stuff is for Louisiana sports writers to write not for the University of Tennessee. We are as good as Bama any day of the week and we don’t have to cheat or subpoena to do it.

Easy Euro Vol, he may be 14th now but he could be in the top 5 after his senior season. He appears to have most everything you look for in a pro-style qb. And besides, LK has coached and also prepared for quality qb's (incl. nfl) and knows what to look for and what he wants. I'm betting on LK sees plenty in this kid and that's good enough for me.

The only real reason a low release point is bad is that it's easy to tip those passes, and tipped passes almost always go in the defense's favor because at that point, there is no pass interference. They can tackle our guys and let someone else go for the ball. But again, it might just be something that he does when he's got a clear throwing lane, because he doesn't consistently have a low release point. And yeah, being 6'6 or 6'7 helps. :) I'm seeing video of his arm, there's nothing wrong with the kid's throwing ability. It'd be nice if he could graduate early and join us for spring practice... put some meat on his bones, put a little more distance on his deep ball...

The word "commitment" in today's recruiting-speak means "they offered and I accepted until something better comes along." Unfortunately, that definition also applies to the word "offer" when made by a particular program TO a recruit. Both words are figuratively written in sand until written official documents are SIGNED on paper by both parties. Don't hate the player(s), hate the game. I'm pretty sure before he signs with us that he will be informed EXACTLY what the word "commitment" NOW means.

If my memory is correct I think Stafford and McCoy were way up in the rankings. Regardless, I agree 100% that Bray is probably a diamond in the rough. I like his size and arm. I'm betting he'll be wearin' Orange after seeing the Orange Out with 109,000 rabid fans! Go VOLS!
