Safety Dietrich Riley from St. Francis High School in La Canada, Calif., has Tennessee in his final set of schools — for now.
“My schools are switching on a weekly basis,” the 6-foot-1, 200-pounder told the News Sentinel.
As for now, UT, UCLA, Southern California, Florida, Oklahoma, California and Notre Dame are in the running.
Notre Dame’s standing could change depending on who it hires to replace coach Charlie Weis, who was fired Monday.
“It’s going to be interesting to see what’s going on with their staff,” Riley said.
Riley seems open to Notre Dame, in part, due to their academic reputation.
“It’s important because once football’s over I must be able to fall back on my degree,” he said.
Riley took his official visit to UT in October.
“I think coach (Lane) Kiffin is doing a great job helping them rebuild,” Riley said. “It’s still hard to believe he’s only been there a year.”

?????? I would think it depends more on what his specific major is. Some of UT's departments are ranked fairly high.

Your reasoning is weak on all points. UT offers him every opportunity he would have at the other schools/football programs. And if he is that good in football, Monte will make him an NFL millionaire.

Like Logistics, Quality and several of the engineering majors..plus, if you read the College ranking books that are published each year, UT has some of the highest rankings in the US as far as placement after graduation, Texas is aniother...people who graduate form UT are very loyal to UT and they come back to recruit from UT. We have a nationally recognized brand.

This is a very true statement, but addressing his statement about after football.....it is really refreshing to hear he is thinking about the future in a very realist light. Very few players (even the very good......Heath Shuler to name one) has what it takes to make it in the NFL so those degrees do come in handy. The quality of an education should be the deciding factor. After typing this I just wonder why Harvard, Princeton, Vandy just to name a few does not have power houses??????

ii believe Phil Fulmer gets this job, he can recruit nationally, his winnig percentage is still good nuff, and a fresh start sometimes helps eat more doughnuts, or something like that

May be Risean Broussard...We will lose him if LSU offers!

WOW! I read the article and I am surprised that State is not looking at him. I do think his size is probably holding him back, but if he is already exceeding Uncle Favre I think if I were a coach I would look at him. If I were a coach I would probably want to give him a chance with no guarantee of playing time, but honestly I don't think any coach should do that.....the player needs to earn his time. But if things don't go his way and he ends up in division II a lot of very good NFL players have come up through those ranks....I say play you heart and play hard and the future will take care of itself. Good luck!

Charles Davis is doing pretty well, as is Bill Bates, etc. I'd say it's the students that better reflect academics rather than the University. Have to admit we don't attract the most intelligent HS seniors though.

Ive said it before and I'll say it again; Pulling in a recruit(other than a qb or rb) from the state of California is extremely difficult; USC:CAL:UCLA and Oregon have as good or better programs as UT and it's a long trip to knoxville..If this kid is worrying about academics than he would be going to Stanford

Really? I am a graduate of UT and I am a CEO of a Fortune 500 company and have been a CEO of 3 others, one on the West Coast. UT also boasts a few Fortune 50 CEO's and is a solid educational institution. Your comment has no foundation.

Speaking of Fulmer`s 'winning percentage'being good. Most of his wins came against weak or average teams. And he struggled with a lot of them.Yes,he can recruit nationally. But he never could get the most from the talent that he signed. The difference in the performance of this year`s Vols and last year is like night and day. Some die-hard Fulmer fans won`t like what I`m saying, but they know it`s true.I always liked Fulmer. But I didn`t watch the Vols on Saturday to see Fulmer.I watched them because I like to see them win.AND beat teams like Florida and Bama.AND be competitive.

Probably shouldn't call someone an idiot and then misspell 'site'.
Without dissing UT, 'allVolinGA' is right. Most college degrees are much more valuable in their region because of the density of fellow graduates. Hope we get him anyway.
