UT out of tickets for Chick-fil-A

UT is already out of tickets for its return to the postseason. Anybody who already has one will see the Vols in orange again.

UT will be the home team in the Chick-fil-A Bowl against Virginia Tech on Dec. 31 (TV: ESPN, 7:30 p.m.), so it will wear the customary orange uniforms at the Georgia Dome.

For the record, the Vols (7-5, 4-4 SEC) were 6-2 at home this season, though one of those wins came in black tops after the surprise wardrobe change on Halloween against South Carolina.

UT had an allotment of 17,000 tickets for the bowl game, 11,000 of which were snapped up before the trip to Atlanta was even official. The rest of them are already gone now according to UT officials.

From a major network's website, who ranked the games in order of intriguing matchups...

"9. Chick-fil-A Bowl
No. 11 Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee
7:30 p.m. ET, Dec. 31

NASCAR mogul Bruton Smith once offered the Hokies and Volunteers $20 million each to play a game at Bristol Motor Speedway. With a total payout of $6 million, Chick-fil-A Bowl officials might be getting off cheap. It's a matchup of two great running backs: Virginia Tech's Ryan Williams and Tennessee's Montario Hardesty.

20. Outback Bowl
Northwestern vs. Auburn
11 a.m. ET, Jan. 1

Will Auburn change planes in San Francisco to get to Tampa, Fla.? Perhaps no team took more of a back door into a bowl game than the Tigers, who lost five of their last seven games in coach Gene Chizik's first season. Northwestern won four of its last five games, including upsets of then-No. 4 Iowa and No. 16 Wisconsin."

Outback ranked just below the Emerald and GMAC bowls....what a joke this bowl is this year. Hope they have half capacity and lose their shirts on this one.

Wow. It must be fun to make up attendance statistics! I was at 4 games this year, and you need to lay off the crack pipe. Where did you come up with 80K? I think you were referring to Auby's stadium. They max out at 84K.

Dawg, those tickets were going to sell anyway! The thing that they'll realize after game is that the real money maker will come up short: RATINGS! The TV ads are well the real money is made and the fact of the matter is Auburn vs. Northwestern is a lame matchup that most people wouldn't watch if it was the Fiesta Bowl!! I just read an article on ESPN where they rated the bowl matchups on intrigue and the Outback was no. 20!!! The Chik-Fil-A Bowl was no.10! Thank you very much!! Most fans of college football couldn't name the two starting QBs in the Outback Bowl!

That's not true...we had both, but the lowers were snagged up by those of us who ordered early!

Don't worry about him...he's a lurker that tries to get everyone riled up. Either he doesn't understand what I meant (which would mean he would be incredibly stupid) or that post was the best he could come up with as an attempt at an insult. Either or, it's a very sad attempt.

True. Like I said before, if they want the 10th place SEC team that finished 2-5 over the 5th place SEC team that finished 5-2, it's their bowl, fine by me. They needed to sell tickets because hardly anyone outside the stadium will be watching. It gripes me that Auburn got the NYD bowl bid over several higher conference finishers (basically every other bowl-eligible SEC team), but only on principle. To be fair, the last time we played there we sent tickets back which doesn't sit well with bowl committees, and I get that. However, Auburn playing Northwestern (cough, cough) on NYD at 11:00 AM, outside, in Tampa (woo-hoo!) while we get to play #12 Va Tech indoors, the only game on TV, in Atlanta on New Year's Eve? I've been to bowls in both places and yeah, Auburn won the big prize all right. Enjoy.

VolFanInSanAntonio writes:

Auburn is selling their allotment to students at half off which is more than many of the onlione ticket brokers are selling them for. I for one would rather play Virginia Tech as it is a good regional match-up. playing Northwestern or Wisconsin just wouldn't be the same.

Bruton Smith was going to completely demolish all of the infield facilities and build a football field there for one game. After that he planned to tear up that field and rebuild all of the infield facilities. He was planning on redoing all of that anyway.

Where did this bogus stat about Aubie selling 30k tickets come from? Raymond James Stadium seats 65k ... if Aubie sold 30k and just say NW sold 7k.. it means the locals (including corporate sponsors) only coughed up for 28k ... they can't do that year in / year out and expect to have a successful venture.

The University bought 16,000 of those tickets and just hope to sell them either through the Univ.or funneled back through the Bowl.. They had to guarantee sales just to get the bid. Just count the empty seats on game day.
