Orgeron hasn't talked about other jobs, says 'I'm busting my tail recruiting'

Tennessee assistant coach Ed Orgeron emphatically denied Internet rumors Friday that he has talked to other schools about job opportunities.

“I’ve been busting my tail recruiting for Tennessee; that’s my focus,” Orgeron said via a phone interview while on the road recruiting.

Specifically, Orgeron, who serves as assistant head coach, defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator, said he has had no contact with UNLV or Southern California.

UNLV is looking for a head coach after firing Mike Sanford.

USC has no openings. However, there has been speculation that USC could rework its defensive coaching staff after an 8-4 regular season. The Trojans finished 42nd in total defense in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision.

Orgeron is scheduled to earn $650,000 each year of his three-year deal with the Vols.

At other coaching stops, Orgeron’s name has annually come up with coaching vacancies because of his history of success — both in recruiting and coaching defensive linemen.

I wish some of the UT leaning bloggers would start leaking reports that the following Bammer or roach lizard coaches are rumored to be leaving.

In the day of the internet, this stuff is just thrown out without any tad of truth.

Of course, Coach O did not say that he was not going to leave so that gives the bloggers fuel for their fires.

One other comment, I would like to thank Coach Gran for the class that he displayed in his short time with the Vols.

Wishing all the best to him (unless he is on the opposite side of the living room or field) and his family.

He is one of the good ones and it hurts to lose him.

I was thinking the same thing myself. I kept waiting to see his quote saying "no. I'm not leaving." For right now all we know is that he is focused on recruiting and according to this article, not turning down job offers either. Atleast he unlike a couple others, is keeping UT a priority for now.

Amen to that, easleychuck! I wish Coach Gran were staying with us. And kudos to the KNS for doing a great story back in the summer about their special-needs child, Sydney.

As for Coach O, my God, what a treasure! Hope we do whatever it takes to keep him. If we are ever going to get back again to being a contender for the national title, Coach O will have to be here to lead the way in recruiting.

Agreed. I can't see Coach O leaving or seriously entertaining the notion of leaving unless it is a head coach opportunity that he can't pass up. I would not hold that against him, of course. But if he makes a lateral move before Tennessee is rebuilt, I will not be happy with him.

That said, I hope he stays for a long time. Maybe he'll be the head coach here when and if Kiffin leaves someday. In any case, I sure do appreciate the job he is doing for my beloved Volunteers. You GO, Coach O!!! (oops, I mean, you STAY, Coach O).

I'm so worried about this coaching carousel process. I wish this "investigation" would end (seems like there's not a whole lot). All these rumors are coming from other schools either,

1) Wishing he was on their team
2) Wishing he would leave TN because he's recruiting the best in the nation
3) Wishing this rumors were in fact true - but they're NOT!

Get 'em Coach O

Pepe_Lepew writes:

As long as we can keep our nucleus of the Kiffin duo and Coach O, I'm not very worried about the electrons circling around them. Lower level assistants moving up the ranks is actually a pretty good reflection of the quality of the staff we have. We will just plug in some new ones (after they have been thoroughly vetted, hopefully) and keep climbing that mountain in our return to BIG ORANGE DOMINATION!!!

It is what Texas is, hopefully, going to do the Bammers. Oh, no that is "capping". To h*ll with conference loyalty, don't see an upside to them winning, so them and their lying captain, gnome of a coach can crash and burn.

I seriously doubt if you were ever face to face with Coach O that you would call him a clown. LOL he would break you like a little twig. I think this coaching staff proved this year that they can compete with Bama with a lot less talent so we don't have to out recruit Bama or Florida we just gotta be in the ballpark with them.

You can wish all you want, but Alabama is loaded and Texas hasn't seen a defense anything like it all year. Tide's QB and RBs come back, Julio is back, most of the OL is back, and Saban has been bringing defensive replacements along all year, so things will be good again. And, the #1 QB in the nation is coming in next year for the future as well as another top recruting class.

Orgeron is not going to LSU! Whereever he goes, he's going to be the recruiting coordinator! He is not about to go to LSU and step all over Frank Wilson's opportunity! Would he go to USC?! Are they really willing to pay him more than the $650,000 per year that he's making now? And we well know that UT will counter offer more than that to keep him! So is some university going to bring Orgeron on as DC for $1 million per year? I'm not saying they won't, but you're stepping up the game when you match UT's assistant coaching salaries! Because you know Ed is going some place to bring in guys that want 80k to be the defensive assistants.

Im sure that what all you bama fans said last year about Utah, they have never seen a team like on off. and def. and then Utah came out and destroyed bama.
Maybe this year Bama wont embarrasse the rest of the SEC.

Cris,I feel your anger and hate when a poster starts running their mouth about how great their program is,especially after that program has done nothing yet except lose to Utah.Alabama may very well win it all this year, but they may lose also.987 needs to wait until Alabama shows they are capable of winning it all before the crowing begins. He should remember the great unbeatable, best football team of all time, three peat national champion Florida Gators that turned out to be NOT any of those things. He should ask the now Crow eating gator posters what eating Crow is like.It can't be very tasty.Alabama and Florida are very good teams, but I bet if you would ask the players from either team what they think of some of their fans, they would be ashamed that they are associated with their team.
