No Silence Here: Hostessgate = Watergate?

One might infer a NYT columnist is getting a bit carried away with the comparisons: Whether Coach Lane Kiffin actually handed the hostesses a road map and chits for gasoline fill-ups is not the point. It happened on his watch, the way Watergate happened on the watch of Richard M. Nixon.

Don't know what to make of these NYT stories. How did CLK PO New York writers so badly they make up a new hatchet job everyday - no facts, no new info - just wild allegations and moronic speculation. Kiffin is Nixon in this last iteration. He'll probably be Hitler by weeks end.

johnlg00 writes:

Among the many facts Vecsey missed in his back-handed smear piece is that the girls made the trip back in mid-September, IIRC, weeks before the rock-slide. Just the way he described the rock-slide was another snarky slur. I doubt he would be quite as welcome touring that farm in Anderson Country or a number of other places he mentioned if he came back after writing this. Ban "Rocky Top"!?!? Now, sir, you go too far(;-P)!

PS: Nixon went down not because Watergate HAPPENED, he went down because it was proven to be part of a vast array of "dirty tricks" undeniably run out of the White House and because Nixon didn't immediately disown it and fire the people involved. All we SORT OF know about "Hostess-gate" is that the girls made the trip--I am COMPLETELY dismissing that, uh, fantasy described by the Memphis AAU coach--but not who "put them up to it" if anyone. We'll see how this all plays out, but I am pretty much afraid the UT-haters will be sorely disappointed.

OrangePride writes:

OMG......are these people that dense or are they just so desperate to print "something" they will just go to any extreme available. FIRST, the big problem with Watergate was the "coverup" and not simply whose "watch" it was on. There's been no coverup here, in fact quite the opposite. SECOND, there was a "crime" committed in Watergate and, unless you want to brand holding a sign criminal, there was no crime in this case. The facts right now point to very little if any University involvement. So take this story and throw it on the scrap heap along with any copies of the New York Slimes you can find. What a slug you are!

What amazes me is it somehow excapes the NYT's that these hostesses are present at virtually EVERY major school. But, there's no mention of those? It's as if they've uncovered something new at Tennessee. Ridiculous.

And, another thing. I understand one of the two hostesses is from Spartanburg. Duncan High is in her area! It's not some strange, long trip, out of the way. Surely that's easy to verify.

In the end, I think what we'll find is these girls met the two players at a football camp last year, kept up with them on Facebook or some other way and decided to go to a game when one girl was going home for a weekend visit. Should they have not done it given their positions with Orange Pride? Yes, shouldn't have done it. Is it a major story warranting 3 stories in the NYT's? NO!

No matter what side of the political fence one is on, it is a fact that the NY Slimes refused to publish the emails of the CRU 'scientists', but have never refused to publish any other sensitive information illegally obtained, such as the Pentagon papers or numerous national security leaks from Congress or the White House during Bush's administration. This is a completely irresponsible organization of gotcha journalists. They aren't interested in reporting news, they are interested in making it, and if they have to make themselves the story to do it, so be it.

If in fact it is true that Kiffin is responsible for anything and everything anyone remotely associated with athletics at UT takes upon themselves to do, as the Slimes reporter suggests, then it is also true that the management of the NY Slimes is responsible for this reporter's vendetta against UT, and it should be viewed by all loyal to UT that the NY Times management is making war on the UT football program. Therefore, all associated with UT should declare war on the NY Slimes. Don't buy the paper. Don't read the paper. Don't advertise in the paper. Attack the paper at every opportunity.

The following was sent to the email address you gave:

"I've long despised your newspaper for its whoring for the Democrat Party. But that was just politics. Now you are smearing my alma mater's football coach and program. This is personal, now.

I hope agents who have the University of Tennessee's football program in their best interest will start an investigation of you, your sports staff, and everyone who is contributing to this smear campaign you are running, and I hope they find an outlet for their findings and you are publicly shown for what you are: a smear merchant.

If you want to report that the ncaa is investigating UT for this or for that, fine. But you should also report who it is that is making the complaints to the ncaa, because that is part of the story, too. The fact that you are not reporting that is evidence that you are involved in an attempt to smear Lane Kiffin."

I also included some of my posts which blast the Slimes - and explain why - that I've written over the past couple of days.

I urge everyone to attack them this morning with everything you have.
