Summitt reneges on jersey vow

When the Lady Vols assembled in the locker room Wednesday night to dress to play Louisville, coach Pat Summitt held up Glory Johnson's jersey.

Johnson gulped and thought: "Oh, man, what did I do?''

"Then she turned it around.''

The players' names are back on the Tennessee women's basketball jerseys after an absence of five seasons.

It's not a reward to the team, but rather Summitt's present to a loyal fan base.

"I can't tell you how much mail that we've opened that said please put the names on the jerseys,'' Summitt said after the No. 3 Lady Vols routed Louisville 86-56 at Thompson-Boling Arena.

"We've had text messages, all kind of e-mails: 'We're upstairs, we cant see.' . . . 'It's hard to distinguish the new players.' ''

Summitt made the decision during the plane ride to New York last Friday before the Rutgers game.

"I thought, one thing we can be proud of is we have the very best fans in the women's game,'' Summitt said.

"They come, they're loyal. They sit in the upper deck. They cheer. They give us an edge.

"And there are a lot of people that go on the road.

"So, for whatever reason I said I'm going to do it.''

Which meant breaking her vow to never put individual names back on the jerseys.

"I lied, sorry,'' she said. "I don't lie but I did lie this one time.''

Summitt took the names off the jerseys prior to the 2004-05 season. She had just signed the No. 1 recruiting class that included Candace Parker, Alexis Hornbuckle, Nicky Anosike, Alex Fuller and others - a class that would eventually win two national titles.

Such a star-studded class, Summitt figured, needed to focus on the team concept.

She was leaning toward reinstating the names the following year - until the 2004-05 season ended abruptly in an NCAA tournament loss to Michigan State.

"We gave that game away,'' she said. "It was probably the most disappointing loss in the postseason of my entire time here.''

So the names stayed off. Until now.

"This is all about our fans,'' Summitt said.

The players were pleased but knew better than to get too bubbly.

"Yeah, it's on there,'' said Shekinna Stricklen, "but it's all about what's on the front anyway.''

Impaired Vision: Johnson had an interesting night. She missed her first eight shots from the field before converting her ninth attempt with 18 minutes to play.

Coincidentally, Johnson lost a contact lens somewhere between her last miss and her first make.

"Last time I lost a contact in a game Pat got mad when I stopped so I played (this time) without it,'' Johnson said with a laugh. "I had to squint.''

After she made her first bucket, a short jumper, "I thought about not putting my contact back in,'' she said. "I really did.''

But Johnson didn't allow a frustrating night on one end to infect her play at the other end.

She had 10 rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals.

"It's not the percentage any player wants to have,'' Johnson said of her cold start, "but I know there's things I can help myself.

"My defense. That's passion. That's effort. My rebounding. I can do that myself.

"If I'm not playing well offensively, I've got to play defense. Otherwise, I'm not helping my team at all.''

Which wouldn't have appealed to Summitt.

"One thing about Glory,'' she said, "it has more to do with her competitive attitude.

"She's going to keep playing regardless. Sometimes she's her own worst enemy because she plays too fast.''

Great attitude Glory, I predict you will go down as one of the lady vols all time greats.

Glory's defense and rebounding is always good. I like the fact that she realizes too keep working on both ends and the game will come to her. All of the ladies are playing well this year but Glory continues to impress me! I like what I see in this young lady!

Thank You, Pat. There are plenty of times that I've had to do double or triple checks just to see who did something during a game. The names will help.

I don't get the big deal with names. They all have faces and numbers, but no harm no foul.

mnvol writes:

So, if you can't read the numbers and recognize the face and hair from the upper deck, you can read the names? I don't follow that logic.

In the whole scheme of things the names on the back aren't that big of a deal, but I wish Coach Summitt would have had the individuals on this team prove themselves over an extended period of time before folding on this issue. Last year's disaster isn't that long ago.

Thanks for putting the names back on the jerseys Coach. I have been a Lady Vols fan since the Alumni Gym days and I associate most numbers with more than one player. One of the most confusing moments for me was when Tasha Butts walked out on the court in Niya Butts' number(3), it was like whoa wasn't Niya a senior last season. Of course now any Lady Vols fan can tell you Candace Parker wore jersey number 3 and it is now retired.

Glory shows a lot of improvement from the end of last season to now. There is still room for growth but she is really stepping up her game this season. I agree with Coach that she plays to fast at times and I wish she wouldn't swing her elbows so much but that is her style of play but it normally earns her at least one foul per game. I see more of why she was ranked so high in the overall recruiting class this year compared to last. Her intensity is much better too. Keep up the hard work Glory.

Final note, the whole team looks much better than last. They appear to have what it takes to make it back to the Final Four. Sunday will tell us volumes when we play Sanford in Cali.

They play SATURDAY!! Would hate to have you miss such a great game because you got the day wrong!! If Cain and Johnson stay out of foul trouble,
Prediction: LV 82, Stanford 78.
Hopefully, Brian and Dee will ref this one as well...they didn't call anything underneath the basket last night against Louisville!!

It's looking like we may be snowed in on Saturday here in the Greensboro area. Should be nice to sit in front of the tube with some popcorn and hot chocolate to watch the Lady Vols take down the Cardinal. Now I just have to hope the power stays on! GO LADY VOLS!!!

Gotta love our WBB team, but isn't a volunteer unisex?? I would like our MBB team to be called the gentlemen Vols..Just a thought..GBO!!

My guess is that there are no true "gentlemen" on the MBB team.

It's fine to support the Lady Vols, which I do also, but that was a pretty low blow to the men's team. They may not be perfect gentlemen all the time--what group of young men their age is?--but most of them seem to be pretty good guys on balance.

No names on the player's jerseys for five years, yet the coach's name remained on the court? I think they should take "The Summitt" off the court. The men play on that court also.

I love watching Glory play.

About Saturday, I hope it doesn't some down to the refs like it did two years ago. I'm still not over them sending Stanford's Candice to the line with a few seconds remaining on a bogus call.

THANKS, Pat!!! For those of us who watch at home, it's hard to know the new faces. And even when we know the first 5 or 6 or 7 in the rotation, it's good to be able to tell who the other girls are when they get a shot to play.

P.S. By the way, I don't think you "lied". You were trying to deceive anyone or have any intention of saying one thing and intending to do another. You just changed your mind.

I thought they had renamed it to "The Oyster" because there is a Pearl inside...lol

Speaking of Stanford...the whole game comes down to 2 factors:
-LV's being nervous
-Stricklen

Too nervous, we'll accumulate too many fouls and force shots. If Stricklen doesn't play well, we can't break down Stanford's defense.

We can only hope for good referees. This is one of the best games of the year, so you hope they are not 'homers', and that they treat both teams the same.

That can be said for any team in the country. If Stanford's best players play too nervous it will be tough for them to win. Pat has put together this schedule so that they are ready for this type game. It's ok to have butterflies but at this level that usually goes away early in the game.

or, if Pat used her maiden name, they could call it "The Head."

What do you have named after you?

I would like to see Bass, Stricklen, Johnson, Brewer, and Cain all on the floor at the same time. It gives them speed yet has an advantage in the post game also.
