Kiffin dismisses Vinson from team, wishes him 'best of luck'

Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin had a brutal birthday message Thursday for junior defensive back Brent Vinson; he has been dismissed from the team.

“We wish him the best of luck,” Kiffin said.

There was no explanation given by UT for Vinson’s dismissal as the Vols resume practice today for the Chick-fil-A Bowl on New Year’s Eve against Virginia Tech.

Vinson, 23, received numerous birthday wishes on his Facebook page, but his status report earlier Thursday simply said “everyone thatnk for the bday wishes all my friends”.

Vinson played in nine games this season with 11 tackles, one interception, two passes broken up and a quarterback hurry.

Vinson seemed to put his troubled past behind him this season. Considered one of the best natural athletes on the team, Vinson had no public transgressions under Kiffin’s regime, but did have a couple of close calls.

The most serious came in May when Vinson was questioned by police in connection with a shooting at a South Knoxville apartment complex.

The Knoxville Police Department later called Vinson “just a witness”. Former UT basketball player Ramar Smith was arrested and faces charges of aggravated robbery.

Another close call came in January when Kiffin was settling in as head coach and holding his players to a higher academic standard.

Vinson drew UT’s focus and his performance in the classroom became a story in early January. The News Sentinel reported that Vinson had resolved an academic issue and remained enrolled at UT after a report earlier in the week by WBIR that Vinson had been dismissed from the team.

Vinson’s play, however, didn’t match his relatively improved public persona. In his lone start this season, against Ohio, Vinson looked like a different player than the one that garnered freshman All-SEC honors in 2007. Kiffin would later say it appeared as if Ohio was targeting the cornerback.

Vinson drew the ire of former UT defensive backs coach Larry Slade a year before. After playing in 14 games as a freshman, Vinson played in only eight as a sophomore in 2008.

Yep...exactly slabhand. I don't know what I was thinking, expecting there to actually be some substantial information on this. Not even a run down of Vinson's prior contributions or issues.

Expect Chris Donald to transfer out as well. He and Vinson have both been in Kiffin's doghouse for grades and lack of performance. Good luck gentlemen.

Lighten up. As an actual news source instead of a rumor outlet, KNS tends to only publish verifiable information.
Currently "Vinson is dismissed" is the only verifiable fact, and "We wish him the best of luck" is the only comment from UT's coaches on the matter.
Yes, you can probably google "Vinson dismissed" and find some post on a message board somewhere that has the actual reasons behind it, but you'll also find several dozen speculations on it presented as "fact".
Actual news sources are ALWAYS "scooped" by message boards these days due to journalistic principles, but the information presented by an actual news source is much more reliable.

But, as someone posted earlier, you can add some back story. Are there any other documented on/off field issues that may have led up to this? The original posting was even worse before they added the word "dismissed" to the article. Is it too much to expect a certain amount of journalistic professionalism in the sports pages ... even in Knoxville?

Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Go Vols!

This staff has said many times that is where they want the Vols to be-on the front page. Helps in any bringing in the talent.

Well played

VolunteerLifer writes:

Vinson was said by staff or writers in this paper that he lacked 'focus.' He is said to possess great talent and be a terrific athlete - I think Monte singled him out for that - but that he was a liability on the field. You may recall it was he who was asked to cover for a suspended starter (Rogan?) one game - Ohio, I think, or maybe it was Auburn - where his pass protection just broke down. I doubt he would have ever been a signficant, reliable on-field contributor. Better to free up a scholly than take it up with someone who will always tease because of his talent but will never play well, especially when he becomes a discipline liability as well. We are deep at CB, its no big loss.

Trust me, this kid had it coming. I've seen him do things that would get any college player get kicked off any team. It's good that Kiffin got rid of him before Vinson had a chance to cause another media disaster.

Would have liked to see what he could have done as a receiver, which was his natural position. I remember when he committed along with Kenny O' Neal they were tabbed our next great receiving duo. Just shows not to read too much into recruiting rankings. Probably wouldn't have made a difference in off the field or classroom problems, but if he was successful who knows??

1) somebody send him the number of OSU secondaries... WAY ahead of these

2)read the comments and note how the "story" about the hostesses is being spun, and they continue to include pictures naming the girls. When do the girls get to take legal action?

3) I read the "Jesus, taco, John Ward" post and nearly choked to death. I nominate that for post of the YEAR.

Word to CLK, don't recruit the one guy, he might bring a real gun to K-ville. No pellet gun for him.

It's obvious that Urban is heartbroken about losing his Tebow, but this recent recruiting is bordering on the ridiculous. At least some of UT's players go criminal after they arrive, Florida's appear to come in that way and stay there.

And trollers, don't even start about the hostesses. Gator hostesses probably show their recruits the best places to buy ammo or booze (Mr. Dunlap, please stand up, if you can).

Finally, a newspaper properly referring to Tennessee's current problem as an "inquiry" rather than an investigation. The NCAA has not yet started an official investigation. They are conducting an inquiry to determine if an investigation is warranted.

Thank you for linking to this article.

Really good article showing GA has as many secondary violations as the Vols. I thought the dog fan's comments were hilarious. They said their violations weren't as bad as ours. What a bunch of brain dead idiots. They really think Kiffin sent the hostesses on the trip to SC. Therre is absolutely no evidence of this. None, nil. Now if evidence is presented then I will accept it but innocent until proven guilty. Of course none of them mentioned the beatdown they got in Knoxville. Can't wait to do it again to them next year at their place.
