Brown's deal: $300,000 a year for three years

Tennessee is building an NFL-caliber staff, and it still won't hesitate to pay for it.

According to athletic director Mike Hamilton, the Vols agreed to a three-year, $300,000 deal to bring Kippy Brown back to UT as a wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator.

The salary represents an upgrade from the $170,000 the Vols were slated to pay Frank Wilson this coming season before he left for LSU; and after sitting out this season after working for the Detroit Lions in 2008, it's surely an improved deal for Brown as well.

The Vols still have one position left to fill, though they're taking their time looking for a replacement for running backs and special teams coach Eddie Gran. Considering the emphasis UT has placed on pro experience, a move might not happen until the NFL season wraps up.

May have been an indication that they didn't expect (or maybe didn't want) Wilson to be in the program for an extended period of time.

Your headline and first paragraph don't seem to jive.

"$300,000 a year for three years"
vs.
"a three-year, $300,000 deal"

Usually when you phrase it with the total number of years you give the contract total, "a three-year, $900,000 deal."

I wasn't as sad to see Wilson go, but losing EG hurt a little. Is he worth 300K? I'm not sure. Someone like Kippy Brown recruiting against EG will make South Florida (and virtually the rest of the country) an interesting place to watch for elite speed/height/hands.

I'll take the guy who coached Carl Pickens over the guy that brought us Nu'Keese any day of the week.

Agree. A coach can't be 'one of the boys' and maintain players respect.

Good point.

Still thankfull for his Palardy recruitment though,we needed/need a kicker in a BIG way.

Folks - money very well spent and I hope he finishes his career a Vol in some capacity. Kip is a real coach. The players know it and take everything he says as the gospel. They should since his track record speaks for itself.

CLK did hit the grandslam with him. He can turn the receivers and passing game over to him with instructions on what he wants done, then go handle others things as he knows it will get done correctly - like it has with the defense when he turned it over to Monte.

We want CLK pulling the strings while recruiting the players/coaches. He plays the press for the maximum exposure. Besides offensive scheme/playcalling, those are his major strengths. At some point he will turn the offense over to Chaney and/or Brown.

Obviously there is still a little recent UT football history that is still before your time.

This is one more sign of the real value of Lane Kiffin and his coaching pedigree. It is also a testament to the continuity in the program that Hamilton has maintained with Condrege Holloway's role in football operations.

Sit back and learn about the history of your beloved Vols. Coach Brown's role in that has been huge. Fulmer might still be the coach if Kippy had ever accepted that nearly standing offer for Offensive Coordinator. And for that matter, Hamilton knows he could have done worse than have hired Kippy Brown as the head coach had not an opportunity such as the Kiffins' afforded itself.

Brown likely will still end up a head coach in the NFL someday, but this is an excellent move for all parties involved at the moment.

We're paying for the added draw of a coach with NFL experience, if you don't think kids nowadays pay attention to that, you won't recruit very well.

I was sad to see coach Brown leave both times before. Hope he stays this time. You will see an improvment in our recievers

There may be ticket price increase but it won't be because ofg this. $130 K extra divided by the 720000 tickets sold equals 18 cents a ticket. To get Kippy back I'll pay that.

You don't know for sure what UT's counter offers were to the asst. coaches that left. I think those guys actually left for the opportunity to be coordinators and establish themselves for their careers with even deeper ties to two of the richest recruiting states. Wilson is now the recruiting coordinator at LSU which he wasn't going to be at UT with Ed Orgeron here. Eddie Gran is Asst. Head Coach at Florida State which is also Ed Orgeron's title. The Lane Train is going to keep rolling no matter which coaches leave. When they get off the train they know what they're leaving. Monte Kiffin and Lane Kiffin know how to coach and recruit and they will always be here. They also recruit coaches that can both recruit and coach! They know that there are a lot of coaches out there getting paid that really can't coach. It sounds like that's what Kiffin thinks of Meyer and some of his coaches and Richt and some of his coaches.

hueypilot writes:

With the list of contacts Kiffin (the pop, not the pup) has I'd think we could expect a stellar hire. Kippy was a serious upgrade and I have no doubt the next one will be as well. IMO, the receivers have been in severe need of coaching for several years. Former players have told me our receivers ran sloppy routes, rounding off cuts, making coverage easier. Kippy should be able to put a sharp edge on some pretty good receivers (Jones, Teague) and whoever else we bring on board this year. Same will be said for whomever replaces Gran, I am confident.

Are you people kidding me? Trooper Taylor was an excellent coach for us, and has been at every stop since.

He came in when people were talking about our RBs under performing and with the same guys the next year, they were singing the praises of how much better Houston & Riggs Jr. were doing.

Then our WRs were the issue. They move TT from RB coach to WR coach, that year (2006) Meachem & Swain were the top receiver combo for much of the year, and finished strong.

That's pretty strong statements right there. I for one miss TT, as I like those fiery coaches out there chest bumping and getting excited on the sidelines. Fulmer clapping as someone did something insanely stupid used to drive me nuts (I respect and love everything Fulmer did for UT, and was very sad to see it end the way it did, though I was ready for a change too. I am not a Fulmer hater however, just an FYI).

Question his ability? Trooper Taylor is terrible. As I have stated many times he has never signed an all conference player and he has only coached one player at any school who has made it to the pros and that was Robert Meachman who was going to make it no matter who coached WR. Look at the Numbers they dont lie.

Trooper Taylor is a self promoter. He will continue to bounce around school after school because after a few years everyone gets tired of his BS. He is a terrible coach and he needs to return to Tulane.

With better coaching in passing and special teams, we would have won another game or two. Kiff is a class act for not doing the blame thing. No doubt our passing game will go up a level with Coach Brown. We got a great kicker coming onto the team next year. But we do still need a great ST coach.
