— Good story by Marvin West in today's Shopper-News about bowl games, the good, bad, and, cue trumpets, the ugly.

Covered the waterfront pretty well, but left out the 1966 Gator Bowl, Tennessee 18, Syracuse 12, Paul Naumoff and Larry Csonka, some nifty passing by Dewey Warren, and an equally nifty catch or two by Johnny Mills, Richmond Flowers, and Austin Denney.

This victory led logically into the SEC and national championship season of 1967, the year of Bob Johnson, John Boynton, Steve Kiner, and Jack Reynolds, not to mention Mike Jones on the cover of Sports Illustrated and a full-page color shot on an inside page with Bubba Wyche carrying the ball with "elan," whatever "elan" is.

Would like any updates on our current recruitments.

That was a heck of a game according to all accounts, and a heck of a team the following year.

Try asking for that on a recruiting-based article...

I'm too young to remember those bowl games, but I vividly remember the ones of the mid-80s and onward, where they still had good meaning (specifically the UT-Miami Sugar Bowl). Sadly now, it's all about the Benjamins.... I mean, the PapaJohns.com Bowl? Poinsettia Bowl? Really?

I was at the 86 SB. Beforehand, I had on a button that said "Vinny Who?" This Miami fan came up to me and said, "You're gonna find out Vinny who." I looked for that guy for the next 6 years.

Garner was cut by the Bucs like 5 years ago after an injury.....no news of him since. Gerald Riggs lives here in his hometown of Chattanooga and is on local sportstalk every Wednesday, saying he is still waiting on his agent to get an NFL tryout for him...

AtLeastMyTeamHasPerfectSeasons writes:

Gerald's little brother Cody Riggs was never really considering TN as a final choice in his recruiting according to Gerald, but TN was always talked about...

that 1966 Gator Bowl was the first game I ever remember attending. It was classic. If they had of played 5 quarters, Syracuse would have won! I remember Richmond Flowers and Dewey Warren from that game....cant believe its been 43 years! GO VOLS!
