Blue chip freshman considers transfer to UT

Jeronne Maymon, a blue-chip freshman who left Marquette last week, is considering Tennessee among his transfer options.

The 6-foot-6 Maymon, a 250-pound small forward, is taking an official visit at UT and attended practice Tuesday.

He will be a mid-term transfer and is considering several schools.

Maymon was the two-time Wisconsin state player of the year at Madison’s Memorial High School. He signed with Marquette in November 2008 and was No. 47 in Rivals.com’s final rankings for the 2009 class.

He was granted his release from Marquette last week after averaging 4.0 points and 4.2 rebounds in nine games as a reserve. The release prohibits him from signing with another Big East Conference school, or the University of Wisconsin, according to published reports.

“We asked for a release so we can get out of here because it ain’t working out,’’ Tim Maymon, Jeronne’s father, told the Wisconsin State Journal.

“He’s not being used the way he needs to be used, so we’re moving on.’’

Tim Maymon told the newspaper his son was being used in the post, adding, “and that ain’t what he does.’’

Baylor has also expressed interest, according the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

UT has signed forward Tobias Harris and guards Jordan McRae and Trae Golden for next season. The Vols lose four seniors, including forwards Tyler Smith and Wayne Chism and swing man J.P. Prince.

Maybe he's right. A freshman averaging 4.0 points and 4.2 rebounds in nine games as a reserve, and he and his father are already deciding to bolt because he's not being used as he and his father think he should? Could be quite the prima donna. Also, Baylor is the only other school mentioned as being interested.

I know very little about him, but based on the article it just sounds like he only wants to play on the perimeter. At 6-6 250lbs most coaches would feel he should have some kind of interior game. Either way the Vols need him for next season...badly.

I believe the answer is mid-term next year. He would be eligible once he has sat out one full year and had his academics in order.

Brownnose please. You're the last one to tell anyone anything. The Memphis comments are old and a bit ridiculous. I have followed the Vols since 1971 so step off. My comments are valid.

johnlg00#206211 writes:

I don't know a thing about this guy. My understanding is that Harris is a forward type who prefers the perimeter. It is not strictly necessary to have a traditional post-up threat, but it usually takes more of a patterned, cutting-and-passing type of team to succeed without one. And that ain't us!

Will, could you describe a "Pearl type athlete" and then tell us how many of the current roster qualify?

To many transfers means to many problems. I hope were beyond that. The kid probably can play but I think the risk is to high for the reward. If he was 6ft 10in and 250 then I might change my mind.

The middle of next year.

MU watcher here .. just remember, Maymon (JMay) was the 7-8th guy off the bench for us. He has potential, but failed to impress over his NINE games. The official word on why he left the team is substantially different than what occurred. His father was bursting into practices, demanding more playing time for his son, different usage in games, etc.

The young man is probably a good kid (not that we'd know after only 9 games) but his father is a piece of work who thinks his son was going to the NBA after his freshman year. Buyer beware.

He would be eligible the first day the 1st term ends in early December of next year. Its the same situation as Price was in a couple of years ago.

MUFan06 writes:

Warning Vol fans...I concur with MU09. This kid showed signs of eventually becoming a solid player (making Freshman mistakes of course but was improving). However, his Dad wiped away his opportunity @ MU. According to a source close to the team, it wasn't the Maymon's choice to leave MU. The kid begged to be allowed back on the team but Buzz held firm...the program didn't want to deal with Tim Maymon another 3 1/2 years

Thanks MU. The guys who get paid to write these articles are to busy in photo ops to actually learn these types of things. Sounds like exactly what we don't need if what you say is even slightly true.

Thanks for the info. I'll take a pass. We don't need another dad who thinks he's the coach. Does everyone remember CJ Leak?

MU90 writes:

In reference to why a MU fan would be here commenting .. the young man just quit our team last week. We're curious where he's headed. This is the first article mentioning a possible landing spot.

Prior to the UT possibility, Maymon's dad suggested he was headed to Central Florida where (and this is a real quote) : "We're looking at some decent programs, like Central Florida, where Michael Jordan's son (Marcus) plays," Tim Maymon said. "That would be a great school that he could go in and they could pretty much get to the Final Four and do some damage."

So, according to the dad, Central Florida is just one Jeronne Maymon away from being in the Final Four.

-- As for dealing with his dad .. well, Marquette tried to do just that. We're already thin with 10 guys, so put up with a lot to keep the young man until his dad made that impossible.

That is sort of the impression I got about this guy. It is seldom a good sign when the father or someone else close to a kid feels entitled to tell a coach how the kid should be used. If he comes here, I hope it works out for all concerned, but thanks for the warning.

johnlg00#206211 writes:

Since the kid is already gone from MU and we don't play Marquette with any regularity anyway, maybe he is just trying to warn us of a potential problem. If some other team was thinking about signing up Ramar Smith, Duke Crews, or Nu'Keese Richardson and didn't know their experiences here, I would consider it a matter of duty and good conscience to warn them to be careful before rushing into anything.
