CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — More than a month after his high school football career ended, the awards continue to pile up for Jacques Smith. The Ooltewah defensive end was named Wednesday to USA Today's All-USA first-team defense as well as the Tennessee Sports Writers Association's Class 6A all-state squad.
Smith is the first area player since Tyner's Demonte Bolden in 2003 to make the first team.
"That's crazy. It's just an unreal feeling," said Smith, who earlier this year became the first player in Tennessee history to win Mr. Football Lineman of the Year awards in consecutive seasons. "I don't even know what to say about it."
Smith has met all the requirements to graduate high school early and will enroll Jan. 13 at the University of Tennessee. He leaves for San Antonio on Jan. 3 to begin practicing for the U.S. Army All-American game on Jan. 9.
