Ooltewah's Jacques Smith highlights one of the Chattanooga Time Free Press Best of Preps football squads.

— More than a month after his high school football career ended, the awards continue to pile up for Jacques Smith. The Ooltewah defensive end was named Wednesday to USA Today's All-USA first-team defense as well as the Tennessee Sports Writers Association's Class 6A all-state squad.

Smith is the first area player since Tyner's Demonte Bolden in 2003 to make the first team.

"That's crazy. It's just an unreal feeling," said Smith, who earlier this year became the first player in Tennessee history to win Mr. Football Lineman of the Year awards in consecutive seasons. "I don't even know what to say about it."

Smith has met all the requirements to graduate high school early and will enroll Jan. 13 at the University of Tennessee. He leaves for San Antonio on Jan. 3 to begin practicing for the U.S. Army All-American game on Jan. 9.

Nice to have a new "Big Jacq". Welcome to UT...now put on some pads and sack somebody...anybody....coach O, Pearl, Monte, a cafeteria lady, I don't care. Kiffin needs to do a "Terry Tate" comercial with people from around campus with this guy.

Jacq, ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK!!!! Trample the weak and Hurdle the Dead !!!! Get in the weight room and make yourself special !!

Hey Jacq, do some hardcore recruiting down there. How funny would it be to see a sideline shot and Smith holding up a Follow me to Tennessee sign.

Can't wait to see this Tennessee bad boy under the tutelege of Monte and Coach O. Love to see opposing QBs with happy feet. The Big Orange wave is rising...

The headline should say "commitment" until NSD in Feb. Then he'll walk from his dorm, hand Kiff his Letter of Intent at midnight and then get ready for some football!

ESPN insider story:
The Baton Rouge Advocate paid to have 1,150 pages of e-mails printed as part of a public records request, but LSU only handed over 33 pages, suggesting that there is plenty in the remaining 1,117 pages that the administration does not want seen.

Though the 33 pages the Advocate received shed no new light on the investigation into former WR coach D.J. McCarthy (the student newspaper, the Daily Reveille, reported that McCarthy paid recruit Akiem Hicks to attend LSU), they do hint at some significant improprieties. First, even LSU had trouble getting McCarthy's cell phone records from AT&T -- because McCarthy had obtained a lawyer. Moreover, LSU hired former NCAA investigator-turned-lawyer Michael Glazier to handle its own investigation. Glazier has been dubbed the "NCAA defender to the stars."

McCarthy resigned earlier this month, but the stain of his actions, assuming they are what the Reveille said they are, will impact the Tigers once the NCAA completes its inquiry.
I will take the Hostess inquiry over this anyday. No inquiry would be the best. Where is KNS on this one?

jacques smith is not only a good player but a quality person. this is the guy who will eventually lead the team as a player and with his character.

i can't wait to see this guy strap it on.

Is it just me or does everyone else believe we are seeing new "legends of the game" being developed on Rocky Top? Feels like new glory years are underway. With EB, Montario and all the others with great potential being recruited and developed, I am having happy thoughts. Maybe it's just because it is Christmas. Sure feels different than a couple of years ago though.

This class could be a great one, but the only spot that it seems we need to fill is at linebacker. We have one in Taylor, but it would be nice to get one more. Go get'em Kiffin. GBO

I live here in Chattanooga, Ooltewah is right outside of town a few miles, and Jac has been on local talk radio a few times this year. This guy has been all-UT since his commitment in February and he has even been pitching TN to other multi-star recruits he has played against! I believe I heard him say one time on radio that he has always been a Vol still playing in high school! Can't wait for that d-line in a couple of years: Jacques Smith - Corey Miller - Brandon Willis - John Brown - JC Copeland - Calvin Smith

AtLeastMyTeamHasPerfectSeasons writes:

He has won all-city in every category around here this season, BUT he did not play in their last playoff game because he and another teammate got into a fight in a practice....

AtLeastMyTeamHasPerfectSeasons writes:

Ooltewah was on TV here in Chatt twice this last season, and trust me Vol fans, this guy WILL be another John Henderson, Hayneworth, LLittle type of guy!

Hounddog writes:

Merry Christmas to all VOLS!

Let's play Santa Claus. Hounddog

We have Ralph Williams and Michael Taylor. We also have some very highly touted LBs we are high on. And we have 3 that came in last year. We'll be young at the position as far as the 2nd unit but I think we'll be ok for the most part.

This young man (not kid) is hard edged and full of vinegar....I feel good about him in all-star games because he'll bring his orange passion to bear on other potential recruits.

The other great thing about this cat (besides how great he is), is that we have NEVER had to worry about his commitment status. He never wavered, never talked about giving other places a chance etc. He has been ALL vol for several years, and I cant wait to see him destroy some SEC offensive lineman......GBO!!!!

Yeah Copeland, and Miller will be special as well, But those are the only 3 that are "gimmies" The real question is going to be who the staff pulls out of there azzes on NSD because we know there will be suprises.

LOL! "Terry Tate"...that's awesome! Love to see the local guys be all Vol. I hear he's a pretty darn good recruiter too. Go VOLS!

Sounds like this is exactly the kind of young man the University of Tennessee needs, whether he plays football or not. I imagine that his family and community are very proud of him. I hope he continues his hard work and makes a name for himself as a Tennessee Ball Player and Student. As an Alumnus I worry about the type of Students period we are getting. Unlike my mother who once said, "We don't need students, We have 28,000 Students. We need Football Players." My Mother, God rest her soul, was a unique person who loved the orange as much as anyone I have ever known. I know she would have really liked this young man.
