Richardson still deciding between UT, Florida

Nu’Keese Richardson hasn’t decided whether he will sign with Tennessee or Florida on Wednesday.

The 5-foot-9, 151-pound wide receiver from Pahokee (Fla.) High School has been committed to Florida since May but took an official visit to UT last weekend.

Richardson, who plans to announce his choice at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, said he’s unsure which school he’ll pick.

“I can say both schools are half and half,” he said. “Florida may have an edge just because I’ve been committed to them for so long.”

Richardson told the News Sentinel on Sunday that he was still 100 percent committed to Florida.

That status changed after Richardson reevaluated his trip to UT.

Richardson said UT’s coaching staff caused him to keep the Vols in consideration.

“The whole coaching staff speaks for itself,” Richardson said. “It’s one of the best coaching staffs in football period.

“I feel comfortable with them. I feel like I could have a great opportunity to compete for a starting position.”

Richardson said Florida’s coaches have offered a similar opportunity to play right away.

“That’s a big factor,” Richardson said. “I’m the type of guy who likes to compete and play as a true freshman.”

He said he was accompanied by his parents and two of his aunts during his trip to UT.

He said he’ll consider their advice before he makes his final decision.

“I’ll make my decision on my own,” Richardson said. “My family will give me their input on the schools. I’ll put two and two together and make my decision.”

If you do the simple math, it is pretty clear that he has an opportunity to play a lot sooner at UT than UF.

Urban Meyer is being a little misleading here.

MrBamSeydu writes:

Let's see.... Florida has 39 WR's and Tennessee has garbage WR's. Florida will try and turn Nu'Keese into a "running back" or what THEY call a running back.

At Tennessee he would start alongside Gerald Jones and Marlon Brown.

VolJunkie writes:

He is more likely to find 1st year playing time at UT, hopefully that will be enough to sway him.

Go Vols!

MrBamSeydu writes:

PS - Can anyone name a WR that Urban Meyer has produced and that has been successful in the NFL??? Because I can't. Percy Harvin will be a special teams player because they don't play WR's at RB in the NFL and run sweeps all game.

Kiffin has produced far more NFL quality WRs in his time at USC.

I read somewhere Thigpen wanted to play RB...not sure if that is true, but that may be why Kiffin told him he wouldn't fit the system...as a RB.

Take it for what its worth...

I see richardson as a returner/slot receiver/possible conerback...who knows.

The word is..is that Thigpen decommitted because of Nysher Oliver recommitting....apparently Thigpen didn't want the competition. Besides Richardson is faster and we all know that it doesn't matter what size you are if you are fast....Speed kills!!

Fitting the "system" is not always about size and speed.

It could have to do with a lot of things.

I for one think that there is a lot more to the Thigpen situation than we know about. My guess is the coaching staff say or heard something about his attitude, work ethic, or character that concerned them.

If so, I am glad they made that decision rather than take on a kid who is going to cause problems. I also like how they didnt give a specific reason why they turned him away. It is really none of our business and it doesnt help them and especially not that kid.

StroVol writes:

Something fishy here with Richardson. You've been committed to the Nchamps since may and now your not sure. This guy is coming to UT folks. Urban is gonna smack him around if goes to Florida now. You don't screw with the last winning coach of the National Championship. He must know he can get on the field with what we've got at WR.

troopervol writes:

Interesting quote by Dan Mullen about recruiting and recruiting services such as rivals and Scout:

“We’re digging,” Mullen said. “They might have a kid pop up on their screen, especially a secondary or tertiary player that we might not have been looking at. But I can tell you in the state of Mississippi, our top 25 rankings are very different than Scout’s or Rivals’ top 25 rankings, and those are the ones we go by.”

WinOrLoseWeStillBooze writes:

This is ridiculous. There is no way this kid will be a vol. All of these kids who have UT in their top three are simply rewarding the new coaching staff for putting forward an effort to sign them and making them feel wanted. If they were REALLY as impressed or blown away as they (richardson, montgomery, jeffrey, patrick, charles, myles) say they are, we would have had a commitment or at least be a leader for ONE of them.

I think Teague & King will be the only MAJOR additions to the class we've already assembled. Marlon Brown would probably be coming here if we had Jevan Sneed or Terelle Pryor, but they are at Ole Miss and Ohio State (Marlon is sure to join one of them). The rest of these kids are just pulling a Marcus Hall.

Volunatic writes:

I'm glad to see any uncertainty at all about this guy's destination, considering that he had been a solid uf commit prior to last weekend. Come to UT, Nu'Keese!

StroVol writes:

This is a stretch, but as young as Lane is, he probably told some of these kids to wait till NSD to commit. Go out and enjoy it for as long as it lasts. But in the end, tell em your a VOL baby!

Check the schools that offered Thigpen (UCLA, ND, Stanford, Minn, BC, etc) and then look at the schools that offered Richardson (Fla, Bama, UT, GA, FSU, Mich, etc) and that should tell you something. The Thigpen situation is a mystery, and I don't believe Kiffin handled it well, but we at least know that Richardson was a highly sought after recruit, while Thigpen was more of a leftover thought.

Well, first...two different positions. Second, sometimes I wonder if 'fit into the system' isn't purely speaking on a physical ability level, but on a maturity and attitude level as well. Kiffin we very particular in the chemistry he put together with the coaching staff, no doubt he is doing the same with this recruiting class.

Kiffin may have produced more WR's, but Urban has won 2 national championships. I think the kids still want to win. You know what happens when kids are thinking more about their NFL futures vs winning games. We had that happen at UT in 99 and 05. I could care less how many people we put in the NFL. I want to win a SEC championship again. If we start winning and becoming a national program again, the NFL will come for these guys.

Don't you think the reason the coaching staff did not comment on why Thigpen was turned away is that it would be a violation of NCAA rules?

Very possible you're right about some simply recognizing our coaches' efforts. But this is in no way ridiculous. We're talking about HS kids man.

And there's almost no chance a high profile recruit will commit 1 or 2 days before NSD and miss out on the spotlight. Further, isn't it obvious the strategy of some to remain publicly committed to a school most know they won't sign with until announcing otherwise on NSD? The whole "bird in the hand" analogy applies to scholarships too.

We will snag a couple/few of these unexpected guys for sure. It is very possible we get a half-dozen and IMO that would be a significant accomplishment for the new staff.

It looks like you guys will get Teague & Richardson. I also heard that Marlon Brown is 80% sure that he will sign with Tennessee. The chance to see significant playing time is why these three are leaning toward signing with Tennessee. I can assure you that Meyer is talking to Richardson & Richt and Tressel are talking to Brown. We will all know tomorrow who did the better job of sealing the deal.
