Report: Marlon Brown to Ohio State; Phillips signs with Florida State

A couple of surprising reports on National Signing Day:

WNML radio in Knoxville is reporting according to a source that receiver Marlon Brown from Harding Academy in Memphis will sign with Ohio State this afternoon over Tennessee, Georgia and Ole Miss.

Olive Branch senior offensive tackle Aubrey Phillips signed Wednesday with Florida State.

Phillips, a 6-6, 310-pound U.S. Army All-American and the No. 25 offensive tackle prospect nationally according to Rivals.com, had committed to the Vols early in the fall.

Phillips also had scholarship offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Duke, North Carolina, Penn State, Southern Miss and Memphis.

Yikes. 30th ranked class, here we come.

Maybe we can hold off Ole Miss and KY for the 9th ranked SEC class?

I heard that brown was worried about our QB situation. It's not official yet so lets keep our fingers crossed that this is only a rumor.

it is funny how he changed the source: phillips and oku to auburn to now just saying oku.

When has the animal been right about anything? Hyams is grasping at any straws of negativity he can get. He must be upset because CLK and staff have not kissed his tail since arriving in K-town.

OSU makes sense, they have a QB who has some game experience and they have NO competition in the Big 10, which basically means a BCS game each year.

Don't fret with the negativity yet though, its just a report. Remember there was a report that Les Miles was going to Michigan.

AGAIN! This is BS. Bad information.

this is not a shot at marlon brown but pryor is not a good passer and everybody should have seen that in the fiesta bowl.

So we lose the #1 all purpose back in the nation and now the #1 prospect in the state. Not a good start for Lane and company.

beartn#223846 writes:

I have learned to waste any time worrying about what 18 year old kids decide on signing day. We will always win some and lose some.

If this one is true, at least we won't face him at a rival school. It's not a bad move for him. Pryor looks like he will develop into a good QB, and Brown would only have to face Big 10 defenses. Also, I don't see any other Big 10 schools consistently challenging OSU for the conference title. He is extremely unlikey to win a national title there, but he can certainly make the NFL from there.

the ink isn't dry and you can't take every rumor seriously.

Greyback_Vol writes:

Let's wait and see. I'm not believing this report. Most news sources will pass along anything today to make sure they're not scooped.

SignalMtnVol writes:

wow. lot of negativity. If he goes to OSU, so what? would it have been nice for him to come here? Sure. Will it sink Tennessee? Not by a loooooooong shot. Everyone needs to relax, let the cards fall where they may, and start looking forward to spring practice with the players we will have after today, not worry about the ones who go elsewhere.

Basketball_Jones writes:

Quit being negative, this is only a rumor. If he goes so be it but right now he hasn't said anything. We need this kid at UT and calling him names 6hrs prior to his press conference shows him UT fans are a bunch of whiney a-holes

I've noticed a trend...It seems that when we take a look at a lot these so called 3* or 2* players, they are ready to pledge with undying love. But as soon as another school(Clemson, LSU, etc) shows some love now we have to wait it out...Sweating!! My take either you want to be a VOL or you dont! We dont have kiss anyone's behind!

Marlon Brown is going to OSU. You can doubt me now, but when signing day comes you will know where you heard it first.

This was reported by me close to a month ago. It's not official yet, and man I hope he has a last minute change of heart. But you can't say the govols.com boards aren't somewhat reliable.

if this is true, he knew he couldnt sign with another sec team if he wasnt going to sign with us because he was gonna get cracked everytime he played us. so now he going to the sec's play toy Overated U

If you want to be a star wide receiver, you don't go play for a running quarterback. Can anyone name any all-star receivers that have and succeeded?

Timed_vol (Inactive) writes:

maybe mr brown thinks he can be a big stud in the big-tin.....better than getting hit by SEC d-backs, right?? He should have fun as Terrell Prior learns to pass...maybe, 3, 4 years from now.

walt23tn writes:

If he signs with Ohio State, he's a joke. Weak a**, overrated conference. At least they always get a chance to embarrass themselves on national tv every January. In that case, who cares.

Redbone writes:

Marlon Brown wanted to go to a school that had a good QB. What does he call Terelle Pryor from Ohio ST? This clown can't throw. This says alot about the intelligence of this kid. Go run and play with the pansies of the Big 10.

SeanJean writes:

You guys are hilariously sore losers and bitter. Bottom line: OSU is a better program than us right now, and if he goes there, he is making a perfectly fine choice. They have a star in the making at QB and he will instantly get playing time there. Come on. Grow up.

MikeHamiltonFan writes:

Guys this staff has not been in place long. The thing that puzzles me is not going to USC or OSU, but FSU. OSU and USC send their good players to the NFL. FSU is where many good players, especially offensive ones go to die. They have taken so much top talent and crapped on it, it is ridiculous. The only caveat is that if you are a white QB and you go there and stay a backup, you can make money in the NFL. Danny Kannell, Brad Johnson etc.

Losing top in-state prospects is a "tradition" that has to stop, OR we need to go get someone else's top in-state prospects. While vocally concerned about Kiffin's hiring, he is the coach now...and we have to give him a chance. I have said before(and others)that Kiffin had a tall order in closing the deal with only two month under his belt. There wasn't enough time to build relationships. 2010 will tell us where we are headed, and think that class will be top 5 w/ at least one top tier QB, receiver, and RB. We made the move to a new coach, and now is not the time to jump ship. As someone said earlier, "Don't believe a thing until the ink is dry". If Brown doesn't want to come to UT, I think it is a big mistake. Let's hope we have a few surprises that break our way. Go Big Orange. Also, like to see those big lineman we already have signed!

Marlon Brown is wearing an OSU shirt to school today. This could very easily be him just building some drama. RELAX! That's why people are making the prediction. Pay for Rivals and you can learn more.

Displaced_Vol_Fan writes:

Is this really a big deal if he signs with Ohio State? I mean, Patrick Turner went to USC a few years ago when UT just had to have him, and from what I've seen, that didn't work out so great for USC. He was never mentioned as an elite receiver while there. It's not like TN turns out great WR every year. This kid could turn out like Turner and be good, but not really live up to the hype. I watched Turner a few times and each time felt like we really didn't lose out on much. So,I'm not too upset with Brown going elsewhere. However it does concern me that the UT coaches spent so much time on this guy and couldn't reel him in.

tums writes:

How about we find out where he is going from him before we get all agitated.

walt23tn writes:

I would like to have this kid for sure, but either way Kiffin hasn't had the time these other coaches have. This program will explode and next year's recruiting class will be top 5, so be patient this year and let's be appreciative of what he has been capable of to this point, and of what he brings in today. This program is officially on the right track for the first time in several years.

Auburn's closing better than UT with less time from a new coach. Not sold on the recruiting ability of this staff.
