Arkansas stuck with two-week gap in schedule

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Arkansas football team will play its first game of the 2009 season at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock on Sept. 5, against Missouri State, and then won’t play again for two weeks.

Officials tried to close that gap, but were unable to do so, Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long said in a news release Friday.

“We appreciate the patience of our fans in awaiting the official release of our schedule as we attempted to eliminate the open date in the second week of the season,” Long said. “We explored every avenue to reconfigure the schedule to benefit our football team. In the end, we were not able to find a feasible option for the upcoming season.

The Razorbacks’ second game of the season will be on Sept. 19, at Fayetteville against Georgia , according to the release.

A highlight of the schedule for many fans will be a trip to play Texas A&M in the Dallas Cowboys new stadium at Arlington, Texas.

Here is the schedule for the upcoming season, as outlined in the release, with (SEC) indicating Southeastern Conference games:

Sept. 5 — Missouri State, at Little Rock.

Sept. 19 — Georgia, at Fayetteville .

Sept. 26 — at Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Ala. .

Oct. 3 — Texas A&M, at Arlington, Texas.

Oct. 10 — Auburn, at Fayetteville.

Oct. 17 — Florida, at Gainesville, Fla.

Oct. 24 — Ole Miss, at Oxford, Miss.

Oct. 31 — Eastern Michigan, at Fayetteville.

Nov. 7 — South Carolina, at Fayetteville.

Nov. 14 — Troy, at Fayetteville.

Nov. 21 — Mississippi State, at Little Rock.

Nov. 28 — LSU, at Baton Rouge, La. (SEC).

The tougher thing for the hogs is that they don't have a bye week once SEC play begins Sept. 19. It's almost as bad as the Vols' schedule last year.

Without articles like this we would be reading the funnies on this site this time of year. I am waiting for Spring Ball and then a long hot summer drought of college news.

Does E Michigan count as a bye week?

This may force Bobby Petrino to leave and return to the NFL. After all, Mike Vick should be out of jail by fall!

Only LSU is an SEC game this year?

Did Wyoming? You tell me.

Isn't a two week gap called a bye week or open date? Don't all teams have them?
