Vols 18th in men's basketball RPI

Tennessee is ranked 18th on the rating percentage index (RPI) released Monday.

The Vols have the best RPI of any SEC team.

The RPI has been used by the NCAA since 1981 to supplement the selection of at-large teams and the seeding of all teams for the NCAA basketball tournament. This list is an independent duplication of the RPI without input from the NCAA. The basic RPI is derived from three component factors: Div. I winning percentage (25)%, schedule strength (50)% and opponent’s schedule strength (25)%. Games against non-Division I opponents are not used in calculating the RPI. Beginning with the 2004-05 season, road wins will be weighed at 1.4 road losses at .6 home wins at .6 and home losses at 1.4. Neutral-site games are valued at 1.0.

Does this RPI story serve cover that fact that ut only received 3 total pts in the polls this week? Unless the the bottom falls out a tourney bid should be there. But as the same as last year after the ut/Memphis game Memphis kept winning and ut had to find a direction. So as Memphis sits near the top of the polls again we wish good luck to our ut brothers trying to get a decent seed and trying to get past the sweet sixteen for the first time EVER!!!

I was worried about getting into the tournament after whipping the Dogs and the Dores and still not being ranked, but the RPI should get us in. We won one of the most entertaining games I've ever seen against Arkansas and if it were not for that big musclely dude at Auburn, we would have a 'heck' of winning streak going right now (as Fulmer would say it). During this run, Tyler and Wayne have taken their games from very good to great and Prince is our new leader. Those three can play with ANY THREE in the nation. The only problem is that everyone else is pretty 'darn' weak.

hamsamrick#421285 writes:

volsstinkbad,

If ya'll played us right now we would be favored and win. The oddsmakers would look at the Xavier and Georgetown games that ya'll lost and that we won. Then they would notice how much better we are playing right now. We could not buy an outside basket or much less a three a month ago and now we are shooting pretty 'darn' good right now (Fulmer). Then they would also see that ya'll lost three games before your conference schedule started and that ya'll could get better competition in the Rocky Top League up here in the off season than the PITIFUL Con USA. Your conference is way too weak for you to even be on our website.

hamsamrick#421285 writes:

Mark my words, "Tyler Smith, Wayne Chism and J.P. Prince are playing at a championship level and that will be enough to get us into the tournament." We will find out at 1 pm Saturday if our lack of guard play will get us beat in the SEC tourney or the big tourney. We owe Meeks and Kentucky some pay back. If our Big 3 is enough, we should keep Meeks in the low 20s and win. Then we can easily win the SEC tourny and do some damage in the Big One.

Uh no,no,no and how many times can I say no. You talk about Xavier and Georgetown early in the season when Memphis was bringing in new pieces to the puzzle and correct you won early to but the key is not how you start but how you finish. Plus did you forget Gonzaga? Lets see ut lost to them twice and the #5 Tigers destroyed them on thier home court. Memphis has won 15 in a row and ut has lost 2 of their past 5 games. Regardless of how weak C-USA is remember this only 2 teams in the past 50 years has a longer winning streak in thier conference. So if the game was replayed today the game would be a pickem in Knoxville and Memphis as the favorite anywhere else. And those are the real facts.

You are right and I posted the dates over the weekend. The ut/texas comments are dumb but the facts are Memphis is riding high and ut is stuck in neutral. With the SEC sucking wind this year ut will be lucky to be higher than a 5 seed unless they win out. While Memphis is a #2 seed with an outside shot at another #1. Has ut ever been a #1?(in mens BB anyway)

Beats me UTfan. Sometimes we never know where the tipping point lies.

Meanwhile back to the article. It's nice to be #1 in the SEC but that's not saying much in 09'.

I think we're in at 9-7(maybe 8-8) depending on how the rest of the league plays out.

What happens after that is anybody's guess.

I am not here to diss Tennessee. I wish you luck.

But, I just want to point out that our three losses at Memphis were early in the season, to ranked teams. Most importantly, those losses came before Calipari moved Tyreke Evans to point guard.

The difference in how our team has performed since early in the season is mainly attributed to that change in the line-up.

Memphis does have a history of getting better farther into the season.

Well actually ut is 2-2 counting the 2 losses to Gonzaga, the team Memphis destroyed on their home court. Also, it is not trash talking to say Memphis has gotten better since the beginning of the season, can ut say that?

You don't have to be sold on the Tigers as long as the pollsters and the seeding committee are. Its is easier to progress as a top 4 seed than as a lower seed. Also, while we would love to be in a better conference you have to admit that it is tough to get up for these teams day in and day out. And finally, this year you can't tell me that SC, old miss, ala, georgia, and the others are that much better than UAB,Tulsa, and Houston.

The official language for the Mexican Territory known as Tejas was Spanish until it won it's independence in 1837, 43 years after the University of Tenneessee was established.

3 men who attended some classes at the Real UT died in the fight for the Alamo(university at Austin would need a time machine.)

The band uniforms for the Pride of the Southland Band are Replicas of the Knoxville Dragoon, 1200 men strong who fought in Monterrey. 120 men made it back alive to Knoxville on foot.

The Texas university Tea Sip band uni is a poor version of a cowboy suit! Kinda puts their worthless Cowboy existance in perspective doesn't it.

Oh and by the way, the bulk of frontier TEXAS was populated by the theives and criminal outcasts from Tennessee, NC, VA, KY and SC.

Texas fans are pitiful empty human beings, who are envious of a real history.

Gonzaga is not in our conference, neither is UT, and we beat both teams on their home courts. And Gonzaga we beat quite soundly.

Also, if our team only wins because of its conference, how do you explain our performance when we are in the big tournament? We play no teams in our conference there.

One more thing -- really good teams lose to lesser, unranked teams every week. How many times this season already have we seen a top-five team fall to an unranked team?

Whether you choose to acknowledge it or not, it takes a lot to beat every team you play, regardless of which conference you are in.

But if it makes you feel better to belittle Memphis' accomplishments, so be it.

I am proud of my team and am just enjoying the ride of what was supposed to be a so-so season in a rebuilding year.

I don't know about Soddy Daisy. But as for the bums on Beale St. If you go to any large city in an area where tourists frequent, you will run into that. They are hoping to intimidate out-of-towners into giving up a dollar or two. The hometown folks won't fall for it.

It's the same in New Orleans, Atlanta, San Fran, Chicago, and I think D.C. was probably the worst I've encountered. Some guy practically forced himself into our cab.

I love Beale St. and get back every chance I get.

By the way -- I live in West Knoxville, and have been approached twice in the Wal Mart parking lot by people asking for money. And just a few weeks ago was approached in the parking lot at Aubrey's.

It happens anywhere bums think people with some money in their pockets might be.

And I'm afraid with the economy, it's going to get worse before it gets better.

Wow the Gators are ranked 45 has there ever been a team recruit so poorly after winning back to back NC's. Billy D maybe rethinking the Orlando job

Very true. Don't mean to trash Memphis, but volstink started it and as an immature sports fan, I took the bait. Just having fun and I'm real excited about our basketball team. I went from disgusted, to thinking they are better than the team that was #1 for a couple of days last year.

I started this? Wow thanks for the credit.

Also, for the past 2 years the ut /memphis game defined your season and that game has led to a bad finish last year and this year is not looking much better. To tell the truth I liked last year when ut, Vandy and Memphis helped to lead the state into rarified air. Too bad that pattern could not continue, except for Memphis.

And yet, UT still owns you. 7 wins against Memphis State (Memphis is in Egypt) in the last 10 meetings. It must suck being a step-child. I actually used to pull for your little team, but its people like you that are changing my mind. Go away little gnat, unless you like being swatted again and again.

So you are saying that Hillbilly High's victory over Marquette was a much bigger win than the University of Memphis win over Hillbilly High ??? Says alot for Hillbilly High then !!!

Wow ! A home win over Georgia and a home win over Vanderbilt.. Wow ! Those two are well below average teams in a very MEDIOCRE conference. Ole Miss beats UT by 8... Kentucky beats UT by 17.... High hopes in the beginning... NIT bound in the end...

I'm also a Chattanooga fan and I know what you mean by mediocre conferences. I think it's funny when people consider the SEC mediocre. On a down year we're still in the top thirty snd forty for some teams. That in no way is mediocre. CUSA has how many teams in the top 50 year in and year out...? 2 in a good year? There is no doubt that Memphis is a very good team. But don't even try to compare conferences.

I don't like Auburn but they along with most SEC teams can play with most the top 25. Maybe not top 12...?

Good luck with UNC,Kansas, and Duke stretch! Sounds like a UT schedule. Or even worse a UTC schedule. Next year may be the year to play these teams...well maybe Cal needs to think about this. Of course he'd be trading a probable loss to UT for ...er uh 3 possibly six probable losses. With a tough schedule at least Cal will find out if he has it or not. Seriously I think UMemph can play with any body but...? Why not just add UCLA and UCONN while your at it.

Hey Tiger fan, I think beating Marquette (in Dec.) is a bigger win than any win Memphis has this season. Showing your true college basketball stupidity again dude.

Sorry I don't consider Marquette a powerhouse since we beat them everytime we play them plus have they been on radar since the 70's?

Volunatic writes:

I think it's funny that the steelers fan actually thinks Memphis has a real university instead of a somewhat-glorified HS. I have friends who went there who call it "Tiger High".

volsstinkbad writes:

I would like to continue to play ut if there is a slot but if I have to choose between Louisville, UNC, Duke, Kansas, Gonzaga, and Georgetown to name a few then ut is on the outside trying to get in. We are a national team and those teams keep us competing (and getting) the nation's elite players. Players picked from the Memphis area will not keep us at the top so ut can compete with UAB, old miss and the rest of the 2nd tier players we only want the best.
