Baseball Vols picked to finish fifth in SEC East

Tennessee was picked to finish fifth in the SEC Eastern Division in a preseason baseball coaches poll released by the SEC Monday.

LSU was picked to win the regular-season Western Division title and overall conference crown, while Georgia was tabbed to win the East.

Points for the preseason coaches’ poll were compiled on a 6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for each division, and coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team. Each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion. LSU received 10 of the 12 championship votes in the poll. Ole Miss and Georgia each received one vote.

Tennessee opens the season with a three-game home series against Oregon State on Feb. 20-22.

ESPN likes Alabama for some reason, they'll hold out as long as they can. Until someone else brings it up ESPN will wait, then act like they were on it all along.

First, the title or the article says nothing about Baseball, I had to figure that out myself. If you cannot mention in the title or first paragraph as to what sport you are writing about, please stay in bed and keep your thoughts to yourself. Another sorry reporting job for KNS. You guys suck!

Very good humor piece, KNS.

And your basing your comment off of some meaningless preseason poll and last year's record? Coach Raleigh did a decent enough job last year after being left a pretty bare cupboard by Delmonico. He had absolutely ZERO pitching talent to work with and did a decent job just to play around .500 ball. When Raleigh has a couple of years to get some pitchers to Knoxville then we can judge him a bit better. Your comment is very premature and reeks of a Fulmer-lover scent. Give Raleigh some time, because that's exactly what he needs thanks to Delmonico.

I agree KNS should explain which sport but they must assume the avg. reader knows:

a. baseball season is starting soon
b. the football ratings are not published until after the SEC football media day which is months away.

Again, I agree with your point as a good writer/journalist never ASSUMES anything.

Why would football coaches vote on a baseball preseason poll?

Their SEC blogger Chris Low has already written about it twice. Look a little closer next time.

I'd say fifth is pretty accurate. This team still is a year or two away from being competitive for the Eastern crown. I'm not sure what South Carolina has but I know the other 3 will be much better than Tennessee. I disagree with the West though b/c I believe Bama will make some noise in it & probably end up 2nd. It doesn't matter though LSU looks to be too strong for the SEC this year.
