Brown tells TV station he liked UT visit

Bryce Brown's comments on a Wichita, Kan., television station Monday should provide encouragement for Tennessee fans hoping to get the highly rated running back to sign with the Vols.

Brown talked in the KAKE-10 studio with sportscasters about his visit to Tennessee over the weekend.

“I had a great visit,” said Brown. “I had the chance to meet with coach (Lane) Kiffin and had a lot of one-on-one time with him.

“I had a chance to basically go over the offense and see how they would use me.”

Brown is one of two top-flight running backs the Vols are still chasing. David Oku, from Carl Albert High School in Midwest City, Okla., is also considering the Vols.

“They’re great people down there,” Brown said. “Nice Southern hospitality.”

Although he has stated previously that he will wait until March 16 to sign, he indicated Monday that he can't wait to get the decision behind him.

“I’m just looking forward to getting this over with,” he said.

Brown rushed for more than 1,800 yards each of the last two seasons at East High and combined for 52 touchdowns. The 6-foot, 215-pound running back initially committed to Miami last February, and the Hurricanes remain a possible destination. He also considering Oregon, Southern Cal and LSU.

Make a decision there soon, young man. You have delayed this long enough. Make the right one and come on down. You'd look good in orange with the Power T on the helmet.

If Lane can deal with the Leinart's White's and Bushes, he can handle this kid. Sign up Bryce, Spring practice is coming soon.

HotlantaVol writes:

Anyone else think that Brown is the main reason Oku hasn't picked yet? It seems as though Oku doesn't want the competition, hence the delay. If Brown picks UT, Oku goes elsewhere. If Brown picks elsewhere, Oku goes to UT. Either one is fine, but Brown seems like he has his head in the right place (or at least he would as soon as he drops that used car salesman of a "handler" he has). Whereas Oku just seems like he's lost in space.

Yep...right now in the DL and OL there will be two players on each side that has never played. Pretty scary. Next year I'm sure they will reel in a large bucket full.

Thanks jo, needed something positive since the Dow Jones opened down 250. Love the part about Fulmer and sleepy town.

You are probably right. Looks like neither wants to go where the other guy goes and each is waiting for the other to make a decision. BTW, did you see the videos of Oku? Looks like the whole package--quick feet, strong, and fast. Hard to bring down, too. Of course, you never know about the opposition, but impressive nevertheless.

I second that. Very encouraging to hear.

About Brown: I'm just not seeing it. Maybe he comes, maybe he doesn't, but I don't like this whole scenario, and I don't see how you can't think he is a selfish player the way this is being conducted.

Brown is looking for a quick path to the NFL. At best he is gone by his Junior year. So he wants a system where he can play early and be the feature back.

I would be surprised if he chooses us over Oregon, but maybe Kiffin made a good impression.

I think in our system he would get a chance to prove himself, but does anyone think he is better than Creer or Poole at this point? Does anyone think Oku is better?

My point is that Creer, Poole and Hardesty were good to begin with and now they are busting their A@# to be the guy. I think Kiffin will give Oku or Brown a chance to compete for the starting job, but I am not sure if they would be the starter at the end anyway.

Hmmm I don't think that sounds over-encouraging but it's better than saying we're out of the picture I guess.

All I know is this:

Miami has been trying to rebuild for 7 years and doesn't look like it's going anywhere.

Oregon is never on TV.

Tennessee is always on TV and, other than 3 bad seasons, has been a top flight program over the past 15 years (missing the 2001 National Championship by losing to LSU in SEC championship). Also, Tennessee only has 3 RBs on scholly -- 1 Sr (Hardesty) 1 JR (Creer) and 1 Soph (Poole).

Bryce Brown could beat them all out for the starting spot. Why? Because we have the best new coaching staff in America who won't care whether you're a Sr or Freshman. FINALLY!! The best player will play!!

I still think he ends up at Miami since he has a brother that plays there. I just hope we don't mess out on both Brown and Oku. I'll take either one at this point. Speaking of Miami, did Robert Marve ever transfer to another school? I was thinking he was interested in UT but Miami wouldn't let him transfer to an SEC school or another school in Florida.

I think it might be time to accept that our 2009 recruiting class may be closed.

- Oku appears to be looking at Nebraska and Auburn.
- Charles is likely going to follow his HS QB to Georgia.
- Brown said he wants to be surrounded by play makers, which UT does not have a great number of on offense.
- Geathers may be our best bet, but he is looking less likely as well.

I would love to have any of them, but it is looking less likely that we get any one of them. Even if we get none of them, it was still a very good recruiting class.

RoyaltyVol#280778 writes:

If we could sign Brown, then we should decommit from Oku, like he did us. Our best shot is with Brown, if Oku wanted to go to UT he wouldn't have decommitted. Besides, I believe Brown is a much better back.

I wouldn't worry about Marve. He won't be allowed to transfer here, and even if he was, he isn't that great. I'm a Miami fan as well and he didn't impress me at all. He seemed to have a crumby attitude as well. He got beat out by Harris for a reason, and is transferring because of it.

I totally agree. Brown is bigger and faster than Oku. Oku seems like a headcase to me with his committing and decommitting. It would be funny if we did get Brown and Kiffin told Oku to shove it where the sun doesn't shine!

Agreed! This is a good recruiting class regardless, but if we can get only 1 of these I hope its Geathers because we need linemen. We have enough talented backs that we could survive without Brown and Oku.
