A.J. Cann needs to keep his pen and paper handy.
That’s the best way for the 6-foot-3, 260-pound offensive lineman from Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School in Bamberg, S.C., to keep up with his list of scholarship offers.
Cann has offers from 17 schools, including Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Clemson, North Carolina and North Carolina State.
“I keep them written down,” Cann said of his offer list. “I have to talk about them sometimes so I try to keep up with them.”
Cann said a few schools have stood out to him, but he’s not ready to narrow his list.
“I like a couple of schools but I’d really like to keep it to myself,” Cann said. “I’d rather stay open and see what is out there and who I might like and what they might like about me.”
UT has shown it likes Cann, who said he needs to learn more about the Vols.
“I still have to call them,” Cann said. “I’ve watched them play a couple of games.
“They’re a pretty tough team. I like them.”
Cann hasn’t gotten a chance to learn about new UT head coach Lane Kiffin.
Cann does know a little about Kiffin’s background.
“I know he coached for the Oakland Raiders for a couple of years,” Cann said. “He’s got that experience to help him coach at the college level.”
Cann has received plenty of interest from South Carolina.
Cann said distance won’t be a factor in his decision, but the Gamecocks are working hard to keep him in state.
“I like them a lot,” Cann said. “They have a lot of interest in me and I have an interest in them. I have a nice relationship with the coaches.”
Cann said he will talk to his coaches and family before he decides which schools he will visit this spring and summer.
Until then, Cann plans to keep an open mind with his recruitment.
“That’s important to me because I don’t want to make an early decision,” he said. “It’s really important to sit down and listen to what they have to say and then make my decision.”
Cann’s decision will be made easier by the support around him.
Cann said his family isn’t pushing him to stay in state and choose South Carolina or Clemson.
“My family feels the same way I feel about it,” he said. “It’s whatever’s best for me and the choice I want to make. Nobody’s pressuring me to do this or do that.”

I love the way this staff is getting after the '10 recruiting class and getting after the current team in S & C.
Anyone that has been successful at anything knows what a good work ethic and a good plan looks like. I see both.
Go get'em guys. Go Vols.

Four posts without an interloper? Is that a record?
Seriously, best wishes to the kid. Hope he makes the choice that works for him.

I'm drunk on recruiting already. I've always followed the recruiting part for as long as I can remember, but after signing day comes and goes, seems the thrill is gone. I'll wait until closer to the bowl games next year to start getting excited again. I'm sure this staff will have PLENTY who will consider UT before then and even commit. Just get Brown or Oku!

thank goodness, a big ugly. hope he likes heaps and/or montana.

This article doesn't sound too optimistic. Correct me if I am wrong but we have 7 offensive linemen and 4 are seniors. I hope playing time is his top priority.

I sure CANN see this guy helping us out.

I know this don't refer to this post, but the word from a very good source is that Crompton is pushing his way to the top of the list according to Kiffin. With the right coaching, we may see this kid play to his talent level. If some of you remember the LSU game in 06 when Cutcliffe was here, Crompton looked pretty good. It's all about the coach!!!!!!!!
DisorientedVol writes:
Does anyone think Kiffin might play Crompton so he can sell next years qb recruit on playing time? I don't think so, but this has been suggested. I believe his job to be secure for 3-4 years, but that sounds looney.
Also, Texas already has 10 commitments for 2010. Crazy!

We need help BADLY at the position. He can have an immediate impact!!!! Orange Swarm, Reel Them In!!!

I hope Geathers signs today as we should see him playing this year.

Kiffin is about winning. He want be playing any games. He has so much to prove in the toughest conference. It's show time for Kif and his staff or they will all be DIV II-A coaches in 3 years.

I know we need O-linemen, but to play devil's advocate, ain't this kid a little small to play O-line in the SEC?? IMHO, he needs to hit the gym.....now, often, and hard. 6'3", 260 = not that large.......

Where's the beef?
Need to fill his body on out in the weight room.
Maybe this is why they gave Fulmer and office on campus
so this guy Cann go by and visit for a snack of Krispy
Kremes.

Naay, he's a little on the smallish side. I like my lineman, that when they stand to the east of you, the sun comes up an hour late.
Docrok writes:
He is slightly light for the line however, first he is just a junior in HS and will add weight, and second often centers are lighter than the rest of the line so maybe he is a center.
Caveman writes:
Caveman say it take much to sway young pigball player to choose UT. Fire say the "cure" to luring player is more numbers in the Win Bracket in 09 and being nice to grandmothers. Fire say early in the morning, but smoke if you got some.

yea but those texas high school kids get playin for the longhorns pounded in there head before they can even pick up a football by there parents. most kids dont even have a decsion, its TU or nowhere else
madvillevol writes:
This is kinda off subject I guess but does anyone have any info on what Geathers might do? I know he's supposed to announce today but it just seems to me like Tennessee has fell out of the race. Did we ever offer him?
murrayvol writes:
Much is suggested. Very little makes sense.
At Texas it's fairly easy to get 10 commits to the out year class by this time. Most have a pretty good idea about their destination in the 8th grade.
murrayvol writes:
Way too early in the morning for one of those. :)

DisorientedVol writes:
Optimism on Geathers declined significantly when Georgia made an offer right after our visit (family ties). Yes, we did offer him. He announces today between 1-2pm so we shall see.
knoxlawvol writes:
I don't understand why we are going after this kid when we let Wesley Johnson from MBA sign with Vanderbilt. Roughly the same size and Johnson will definitely be a good player at our main position of need, once he has the opportunity to gain weight through a college training table and S&C program.
johnlg00#206211 writes:
He still has another year of HS and two years before he will hit a college football field. Guys often grow a lot in a short time at that age.
DisorientedVol writes:
I don't think the argument for Crompton was that Kiffin would intentially lose football games. It was more that if our three quarterbacks are similar in talent, then he may go with Crompton for experience and the fact that he leaves next year. I believe at least one will seperate themselves in spring practice. I hope its Coleman but who cares as long as one of them improves.
calvol writes:
This qualifies as news? The poor kid is just trying to get things organized- sounds like the antithesis of B. Brown. For as much grief as coaches get for their minor violations, there really ought to be a rule against the local rag contacting HS underclassmen. KNS, leave him and the others alone and let the coaches handle recruiting.

I agree with Kiff! There should be a drop -dead date to sign so these guys can't play this waiting game. This is BS.
smashmouth98 writes:
I think we still have a great shot with Geathers. I know he has those ties to UGA, but we can offer immeditate playing time, and a chance to be coached by the best Defensive Coach of ALL TIME!!!
Come on Orange Swarm, REEL THEM IN!!!
DisorientedVol writes:
“Once we heard about that (guys like Bryce Brown and Orson Charles still unsigned), we didn’t feel rushed or anything to sign,” said Mr. Geathers. “We are in a good situation and none of the schools are asking us to rush our decision.”
When one does it, they all will follow. We need a drop-dead date!
BSweet writes:
Geathers picked UGA. I was really hoping he'd be a Vol. The lack of depth at DT is scary. UGA seems a lot like us under Fulmer. Richt can get talent, but he can't win championships. Wonder how long Dawg fans will be patient?
appalachianvol writes:
I hate having to go to another link to find out news about Tenn football. The KNS is really slow. We lost Geathers. We could have used him in Sept. I sure hope we get Charles.
Go Big Orange
