UT announces baseball All-Century team

One phone call floored Mike Smithson.

It was Tennessee baseball coach Todd Raleigh, and he had some good news: Smithson had been selected to the UT All-Century team.

“I didn’t know what to say,” recalled Smithson, a former UT standout pitcher who went 11-2 and notched 89 strikeouts during the 1975-76 season.

“A lot of good players have come through this school in the last 100 years. To be named one of them is definitely a great honor.”

Smithson, who played for seven years in the major leagues (1982-89), was among former players honored at the 17th annual Baseball Leadoff Banquet at the Knoxville Convention Center on Thursday night.

For Condredge Holloway, a former UT shortstop, the night served as an opportunity to reminisce with old teammates.

“Some of them I haven’t seen since ‘74 or ‘75,” said Holloway, who batted .351 for UT from 1973-75. “That’s very special.”

But Holloway puts the accolade in perspective. A multi-sport athlete, he was UT’s first black starting quarterback, leading the Vols to three bowls, winning two. He said he’ll always cherish the opportunity he had to play both sports.

“The fact that I got to play the sport I loved, which was baseball, and play the position that I loved, which was quarterback, was fantastic. After that, a game-winning base hit or a game-winning touchdown was secondary,” said Holloway, who c serves as assistant director for player relations at UT.

Raleigh, along with UT athletics director Mike Hamilton, retired the No. 18 jersey in honor of Phil Garner, who played for the Vols from 1968-70 and went on to play and coach in the major leagues for almost two decades.

“Phil Garner has meant so much to the game of baseball both as a coach and player,” Hamilton said in a university release. “I think it’s great we’re able to retire his number and pay tribute to such a legend.”

Garner, along with the All-Century team, will be honored on-field today during the Vols’ season-opener at 4 p.m. against two-time College World Series champions Oregon State at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The 26-man All-Century team was chosen based on fan votes and statistics accumulated while at Tennessee.

Rick Honeycutt was an all pro for several years. Pitched for Oakland and the Dodgers for 21 years. He is now the pitching coach for the Dodgers....great guy and was a tremendous pitcher.

Mike Basse is still the best college centerfielder that I ever saw.

Jim Frye was a good one --- ironically a fraternity brother of mine too. Sigma Chi.

I was fortunate to have played with Jimmie Lee in the late 60's. Jimmie might have weighed 150 soaking wet. He truly had some of the nastiest stuff I have ever seen. On a trip to California, Jimmie was to start the opening game against UCLA. We had all broken curfew the night before ( I know that's hard for you to believe, Coach Wright) and needless to say, Jimmie was not in the best of shape at 9:00 am with the temp @ 90 degrees already. He probably threw 10 warm-ups, threw up and pitched a 1 or 2 hitter. "Sugar" as we all called him was one hell of a pitcher. Speaking of nicknames, Phil Garner had a couple "Soap" and "Stone Hands" come to mind. Does anyone from the late 60's teams remember "too many Mexican Generals" ?

Mike Smithson is the Alethic Director at Hickman Co High. He also pitched for the Red Sox, Rangers and Twins in his Major leage carrier. He is a friend of mine, we played for the same softball team when he was younger. Mike is a terrific guy and we are lucky to have him here in Hickman County.

Frank,
Sorry about the Xi..I thought about it later and realized it was Chi.

KA here.

No problem VAvolfanRon. I always enjoyed your all's hospitality on a warm spring day to come by the KA house and sit behind it and watch the games. We used to razz Buck Belue when he played at GA. In addition to being their QB, he played a pretty good CF for them in baseball. I miss being at UT.

B/T/W: I am named for my grandfather who played hoops and a little baseball at UT in the late teens before and after serving his country in WWI. I am a little miffed he was not named to the team. He went on to play for the Philly Athletics and NY Yankees before an injury ended his career. His stats at UT were superb, but I guess that the voters seemingly ignored the term "all century" and paid homage to the more recent players. Again, Go Vols !! Proud to be orange blooded.

Mike Basse deserves to be on that team. Tennessee went through some tough times in the 80's. Mark Connor and his staff started the turn around and brought players in from all over the country. Basse came in California and set the stolen base record, was a very good hitter, and covered the outfield as well as any player in the SEC during his tenure. Another player from that era, Knoxville native Greg McMichael, put up strong numbers late in his UT career and had great success with the Atlanta Braves. Congratulations to those who made, and sorry for those that should have made it.

WOW, Frank, (I am sure you wont see this post, but if you do) You must be proud to be in a line of vol athletics. Unfortunately, I aggree...we tend to remember the lastest players. No big deal, you GF must've been darn good...that's what matters. ...

BTW, did we share the kegs as you watched baseball games on the 'veranda'?..lol..

Buck Belue and Herschall!!!...ah.....the good ol days!!!
