Geathers signs with 'comfortable' Georgia

Lineman Kwame Geathers from Carvers Bay (S.C.) High School signed with Georgia on Friday.

The 6-foot-6, 320-pound Geathers chose the Bulldogs over Tennessee and Central Florida. He visited UT on Feb. 11.

“I just felt very comfortable with them,” Geathers told Dawgpost.com after his announcement. “It felt like it was like me going back to somewhere I’ve already been before.”

Geathers is listed by Rivals.com as one of the top 25 players in his home state and the No. 68 offensive tackle in this year’s class.

The decision comes 16 days after National Signing Day. He becomes the 19th member of Georgia’s 2009 signing class.

“We’re very excited about Kwame becoming a Georgia Bulldog,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said in a statement. “He’s a fantastic player and a very, very good young man. We can’t wait to get him in Athens and in position to help us win and continue to strive for championships.”

Kwame’s uncle is Jumpy Geathers, who played 13 years as a pass rusher in the NFL. His brother, Robert Jr., played for Georgia from 2001-2003. Kwame’s brother Clifton is a junior defensive end at South Carolina.

UT is still recruiting three prospects for the 2009 class: tight end Orson Charles from Plant High in Tampa, Fla., and running backs Bryce Brown from Wichita (Kan.) East High and David Oku from Carl Albert High in Midwest City, Okla.

Charles is scheduled to visit Southern Cal this weekend and then plans to choose among UT, Florida, Georgia and USC. Brown, rated the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2009 class by Rivals, has also shown interest in LSU, Oregon, USC and Miami.

Oku was once committed to UT but is considering the Vols, Auburn and Syracuse, and Oku told the News Sentinel via text message earlier this week that he might consider Ole Miss.

He could have been good at DT where we are pretty thin. Not sure about OL as he didn't want to play on that side.

But it looks like he was waiting for GA to offer the whole time.

Well the kid is obviously not that smart if he picks Georgia over Tennessee. But seriously, if he really wanted to play, and play defense, why would he go to Georgia and ride the pine as an OL rather than have the opportunity to start on D for the Vols

All this breathless coverage of teenagers choosing where they will attend college is fine. But not enough, at least for this fan.

I want to know more about Lane Kiffin, the coach. I have yet to read anything remotely resembling a professional profile of him and I hold you to blame for this.

His hiring is the biggest news in many, many years for the Big Orange nation and you have failed, in my opinion.

What do his former players say about him? His former bosses, like Pete Carroll? His former colleagues?

Have you made any concerted effort to talk with Pete Carroll, Norm Chow, Steve Sarkisian, Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, Carson Palmer, Dwayne Jarrett, Mike Williams, Kareem Kelly, Jamarcus Russell, Darren McFadden or anyone who worked with him at Fresno State, Jacksonville Jaguars, Colorado State, or at the Raiders?

All of these people and organizations know Lane Kiffin much better than anyone at Tennessee -- especially among us fans out here.

Any effort at all to talk with any of these people or organizations, either on or off the record, to find out what kind of coach he is?

Heck, have you even picked up the phone to talk with a former Vol player, Gibril Wilson, who played for Kiffin??

Am I trying to tell you how to do your job? You betcha. Because I'm the customer, the consumer, and I'm unhappy with my meal. If this was a restaurant, I'd send the meal back.

PLEASE give us some grown-up coverage out here. We're dying...

I don't know. Going on my gut feeling I think it breaks down like this:

Brown - Oregon
Charles - Georgia
Oku - Auburn

I think we are in the top 2 with both Brown and Charles. But I think our best chance is with Brown. As for Oku, I have no clue...

Academic ranking has nothing to do with it. Bottom line, if he has academic issues, and a 12 on his ACT means he absolutely will not qualify to play in Division I, then we really don't need him right now. There are plenty of kids out there that are both skilled and can handle the academics and I hope Kiffin and company will try and turn us that direction. As far as Georgia, the overall academic standards of a school are as relevant to the football team as Adams is to sports news. He will ride the bench there anyway for a while so a side trip to junior college won't hurt his feelings or theirs either.

golfballs03 writes:

He wants to know what other people think about him. I don't really care what other people think about him. All I care about is what he does with our football team, of which recruiting is fundamental. So if Denmark doesn't care about recruiting then he can be happy watching the NHL.

We didn't really want him.

Pete Carroll did do a phone interview with the chumps on 99.3 FM...he praised CLK & the staff (which he must of already known he was trying toassemble).

But yeah....it was treated like a 1 & DONE thing man...I assume because Pete hyped him up on his coaching abilites, attention to the little things, and his drive/passion/desire to win.

Basically it was all very positive hence it is long gone dude.

He didn’t choose the Vols because he could’nt stand up to the new “non-thug” standard at UT. No earrings, no noserings, pants must be at waist, players must sit on 2 front rows in class and GO to class, etc, etc. Also, he probably was afraid of our work ethic and was not inclined to be NFL ready when he leaves us. Enough said??? I would personally like to see all the unclassy, cheesy, low classed tattoos go also.
