A slugfest and a solid pitching effort from a different source provided Tennessee’s softball team with two weeks Saturday and a sweep 5-0 sweep of play in the Cathedral City (Calif.) Classic.
Senior Danielle Pieroni came on in relief of starter Cat Hosfield in the second inning and got her first collegiate victory in a 4-0 shutout of Oregon State.
That win came after left fielder Lillian Hammond delivered a two-run single in the eighth to beat Cal Poly 8-6.
“The game against Oregon State was all about Danielle Pieroni,” Lady Vol co-coach Ralph Weekly said. “She pitched phenomenally against a strong hitting team and deserved the win.”
Tiffany Huff and Erinn Webb each had two-run homers in the first inning.
Huff is on an incredible pace with 27 RBIs for the 14-1 Lady Vols.
Hosfield had a 4-0 record for the tournament with 27 strikeouts and a 1.11 ERA.
The Lady Vols beat Cal Poly thanks to a season-high 15-hit attack.
Hammond went 4-for-5 and including the game winners.
Center fielder Kelly Grieve had three hits and scored two runs.
