Helms named SEC's top freshman

Tennessee’s Ryan Helms was named Freshman Diver of the Year at the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday night.

Helms, a native of Moultrie, Ga., won nine events this season, while finishing fourth in 1-meter competition and fifth in 3-meter at the SEC championships.

“I am very pleased for Ryan,” UT diving coach Dave Parrington said, “he was more than deserving based on his performance at the championships and throughout the season.”

The last UT diver to earn freshman SEC honors was NCAA champion and Olympian Jevon Tarinitino in 2004.
