The University of Tennessee men's golf team shot an 11-over-par 299 in the first round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational on Sunday in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., tying for fifth place with Georgia State.
The Vols are three shots out of second place. Arizona State (290) leads the tournament, which runs through Tuesday, by six shots over LSU.
Chris Paisley continued his solid play with a 1-over 73 at Sawgrass Country Club and a tie for ninth, five shots off the individual lead of Arizona State's James Byrnes.
David Holmes and Darren Renwick are tied for 24th at 75. Robin Wingardh shot 76 and James Branne, making his second start this season, shot 78.
Women's Golf: Freshman Nathalie Mansson and junior Ginny Brown each shot 2-over 74s as the Lady Vols shot 302 and are tied for sixth after one round of the Wildcat Invitational in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico.
Third-ranked UCLA (287) leads the tournament, which has nine of the 17 teams entered ranked in the top 25, by eight shots over No. 1 Arizona State. UT is tied with No. 2 Southern Cal and No. 8 Duke.
