Tennessee's RPI took a hit after a loss to Kentucky on Saturday. The Vols dropped from 18 to 25.
The Rating Percentage Index (RPI) has been used by the NCAA since 1981 to supplement the selection of at-large teams and the seeding of all teams for the NCAA basketball tournament. This list is an independent duplication of the RPI without input from the NCAA. The basic RPI is derived from three component factors: Div. I winning percentage (25)%, schedule strength (50)% and opponent’s schedule strength (25)%. Games against non-Division I opponents are not used in calculating the RPI. Beginning with the 2004-05 season, road wins will be weighed at 1.4 road losses at .6 home wins at .6 and home losses at 1.4. Neutral-site games are valued at 1.0.

I think the RPI places too much weight on the SOS. I'm not complaining about being 25, but does anyone seriously think we are the 25th best team in the country? The latest projection I've seen has tennessee as a 9 seed playing Cal in Dayton
Ironcity writes:
It doesn't matter how high our RPI is if we keep getting thumped. This team is either going to get it now or win one game the rest of the way.
RoyaltyVol#280778 writes:
RPI? The way this team is playing it will be RIP!
ravensearay writes:
Much as I hate to say it.............I agree.
asleep#212036 writes:
Still, that's pretty amazing. If we win our last 2 home games, we're in, no problem because our SOS is so high. 18-12 will be good enough, but a win in the SEC tourney would lock it for sure. However, I just don't see this team doing much. Just like the football Vols, we don't have a QB, that is, point guard. If you don't have a stud at the position that handles the ball more than anyone else, it won't work. Boy, did we need West this year!
Vol_Jokes writes:
Ooppss...so much for your rpi argument. Take a look at where the SEC teams are. Hint, you'll find them sooner if you start at the bottom and work your way up.
golfballs03 writes:
The only way Tennessee would miss the tournament is if they lose out. As long as we beat Mississippi State and Alabama, which I think we will, then we will make the tournament.
But they better get hot. I thought the chemistry would get better as the season progressed, but it really hasn't. They just don't play well as a team. We see glimpses every so often, but they never sustain it. It all stems from the lackluster play at point guard. Bobby Maze needs to stand up and lead. He is far better than Tabb, but he's coming off the bench. That is inexcusable.
RoyaltyVol#280778 writes:
I think Chris Low (ESPN.com) said it best when he said this Tennessee team just doesn't seem to have any chemistry and that they don't play like a team, but like 5 guys just out there playing together. I think we can lose no more than 1 game if we want in the NCAA tourney and also we need at least 2 wins I believe in the SEC tourney!
golfballs03 writes:
PLEASE TELL WAYNE TO STOP SHOOTING 3's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pearl should bench him if tries another one.
armyvol544 writes:
It still doesn't matter we are still NIT bound.
If that!!!!
golfballs03 writes:
I think it's the epitome of selfish play. He wants to try and prove to NBA scouts that he can hit it, but he's just embarassing himself, and hurting his team in the process.
vscebail#247785 writes:
Calm down, guys. If this is "rock bottom" for the Bruce Pearl era than we don't have anything to worry about. We are still on the bubble and pretty much still control our own destiny to get in the big dance. In four short years, Bruce has spoiled us already. Historically our mens b-ball program has sucked. Let's just take it easy and appreciate the fact that Bruce and company have raised the bar for all of us.
RoyaltyVol#280778 writes:
Your right about that! Someone also needs to remind him he isn't a guard. What was up with that pivot move in the paint where Kentucky stole the ball. There seems to be no true leadership on this team, which means Chism and Smith are to blame!
steelers6rings writes:
Hot off the presses.... The University of Memphis moves up to #4 in AP poll and RPI is now (7)!!!!.. And yes we do have a stud point guard in Tyreke Evans to run the show !!!! AND HOW ABOUT THOSE VOLS !!!!!!!!! Loss to Florida, Loss to S Car, a win over hapless BAMA, one win in the SEC tourny, one loss in the SEC tourny.... Then UT is hosting a NIT game vs Alcorn State !!! Anyone gonna care about the NIT games in Knoxville and show up ??? GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
TIGERSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
golfballs03 writes:
Bruce needs to go back to the drawing board on our offense. Every now and then it looks like he tries to run set plays, but other times it's like barnyard basketball and 5 guys independently trying to make plays. It'd be one thing if they were all on the same page, but they're not!
golfballs03 writes:
I don't know if he realizes it, but JP Prince is now a pivotal member of the team. It's long overdue for him to step up his leadership and intensity. When he gets frustrated, it's like he just gives up and starts making stupid fouls. He and Tyler are both juniors, but Prince needs to pick his team up like Tyler does everyday. He's had a hard time in the past fitting into our lineup but he is now maybe our 2nd best player. It's time for him to grow up now.

These rankings are averages of where you've been, not where you are going, unfortunately. Kinda like being born at 0 and dying at 80, your avg age was 40 but your still dead.
The committee takes into account how you played in your last 10 games. Not good for us.
bluetiger writes:
If you're referring to the University of Memphis, our RPI is in the top ten.
What the hay are you talking about?
As dismal as the Vols season has turned out, I would think the last thing any Vols fans would want to do is start a war of words with Memphis.
orange_glory writes:
Pearl said it was in his game plan to let Chism try a few 3's but perhaps not as many as he tried

This guy could really use a headband. I wonder if you sweat a lot when the Height Chart is your picture background.

I'll give you that one gatorzz. I've always thought our players looked liked sissies wearing those headbands the way they do.
johnlg00#206211 writes:
My main issue with Wayne's threes is not so much how many as WHICH ONES and WHEN! The percentage for all but the VERY best is low enough that it matters A LOT when they are taken, and it is just that kind of lack of judgment that has held this team back all year.
Tiger_Jokes writes:
Hahahahahahahaha ...
MState (UM is in uranus) fans have the audacity to come here and talk about schedule. MState has TWO wins outside their cream puff conference that are worth talking about: Gonzaga and UT and all they do is trash UT! Average RPI of CUSA is 133, 144 if you exclude MState; SEC averages 84. Farragut could compete in CUSA ... go spread your phooey somewhere else.
johnlg00#206211 writes:
OK, guys, the ledge is crumbling under your feet. Get a grip or go over; RPI and SOS won't help if you DON'T WIN! I know I have posted that same thing before, but now it is more true than ever.
RoyaltyVol#280778 writes:
Well, I can see letting him take a wide open 3 from time to time, because he has hit some clutch 3's in the past. Just so he understands he can't be doing that all the time, besides we seem to be getting killed inside, he needs to be there
murrayvol writes:
Somehow I don't think his goal is to be taken seriously.
He'll settle for raising blood pressure, roiling the natives, and generating posts. And in that arena he seems to be doing right well.

Try finding a nice lady (if those exist in Memphis) and spending some quality time with him/her...You'd be SHOCKED at how a little "action" kills one's desire to troll rivals message boards. Seriously, give it a try.
VolJunkie writes:
Interesting, thanks.
BTW, good blog posting today. I still think (hope?) That wins against Miss St., FL or SC, and AL will get us in the tourney. I posted earlier that with the strength of the ACC and Big East, and the number of teams they will place in the tourney, the 2nd round is going to be as tough as any I can remember.
OrangePower11 writes:
I agree with your effort comment....We play half hearted and STILL FIND A WAY TO BEAT THE DOG OUT OF FLORIDA EVERYTIME WE PLAY. First good observation you've made on this site, congrats buddy!!!!

I am glad we play a better schedule now, and that obviously helps with our RPI. The fact is the polls show where this team really ranks-nowhere in sight. Computers can't watch the games. Maybe the switch will flip and we will D up like we did for a few games and make a run. GO VOLS.
steelers6rings writes:
I think its a given that all U of Memphis fans would agree that CUSA is extremely weak. That is something that can't be controlled and why the school is trying to get into the Big East.... And really no Tiger fan really cares what the rest of CUSA does !!! It is what it is !!! But these are the facts.... The University of Memphis is ranked 4th in the coaches poll with an RPI of (7)... LSU is the only SEC team in the top 25... The next closest SEC team is Kentucky.. They got (1) vote.. Those are the facts right now !! If you want to be juvenile and call the school Memphis State or Tiger High go ahead.. That has gotten quite old and stale and isn't true... The VOLS have alot of work to do to make the NCAA tournament.. I only see a win over BAMA..and one in the SEC tourny and out.. That has the vOLS hosting an NIT game at TBA !!!
VolJunkie writes:
Agree with you on one point, the Vols have a lot of work to do to make the NCAA tournament. Everything else you posted is recycled.
steelers6rings writes:
Since I live in Knoxville I will refrain from your suggestion of getting action in Memphis. I get plenty of action around here. Tell your mother and sister I said hello and will see them later in the week..

ahhh..thanks marc for calling me respectful. I know you must have been referring to me right?
By the way, any idea who you guys will be playing in the first round of the NIT?
volsstinkbad writes:
Lets be serious ut is going to the big dance unless they keep getting blown out. Plus, Memphis does play in a weak conference and for now can do nothing about it. But, let me pose this question, would it be better to play in the NIT and probably play longer rather than be a one(possibily two) and done? Would winning the NIT be better than losing quick in the NCAA's. Memphis started their run after winning the NIT so it makes me wonder. Also, all this complaining about the Memphis C-USA schedule answer this do you think that ut would have only lost 1 game in the past 3 years? Would they have enough to get up for every conference members biggest game of the year? Regardless of the C-USA talk its hard to play this every game.
VolJunkie writes:
Marc, that's the point. Jokes has had some good posts, unfortunately there is some bad blood leftover from last year. So instead of generating a dialogue, Jokes just looks to wind people up, fan the flames, and further alienate any possible goodwill. Too bad, it could be a good conversation.
VolJunkie writes:
Who knew that Witch Doctor was such a diplomat? What a legacy: poet, statesman, badazz!
VolJunkie writes:
That's the point Marc brings up earlier. The 2nd round of the NCAA is going to be brutal, not sure if UT makes it past that unless something drastic changes between now and March 19. UT may have more games in the NIT but what plays better on the recruiting road? Also, don't think it is complaining about the CUSA schedule, just tired of the crowing and preening from some of the UM posters. Agreed, you play the hand you are dealt.
GreerVol22 writes:
bet ya got a swell T-Shirt huh? and wow! those crafts can be challenging. When did you get your braces off?
bluetiger writes:
OK. We're good.
For the record, I have nothing against UT and hope to see them make the tourney and do well.
As I've said before, I do have problems with the insults about my school and hometown. But I understand that people are just reacting to some of the rude Memphis posts.
BTW, there were several people or maybe a couple with several screen names posting trash on the Memphis posts up until a few days ago.
I would like to think, however, that most fans on both sides of the state are more civil than that.
While my blood is blue, I'm just a bball fan and enjoy watching the other teams from Tennessee play too.
I hate to see anyone's season end.
