UT, South Carolina to be on ESPN

Tennessee’s men’s basketball game at South Carolina on Thursday, March 5, will be televised nationally on ESPN. The ESPN family of networks held the designation for that game but had previously not announced whether it would be selected to air on ESPN or ESPN2.

Tipoff remains set for 7 p.m. ET. Brent Musburger will call the play-by-play, with Bob Knight providing analysis and Holly Rowe courtside. Knoxville-area viewers can find ESPN on Comcast Ch. 32, Knology Ch. 29, DirecTV Ch. 206 and Dish Network Ch. 140.

For tickets to the game at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C., call the University of South Carolina Athletics Ticket Office at 1-800-472-3267 or visit www.USCsports.com.

The Volunteers won the first meeting between the teams last month in Knoxville by a score of 82-79. Tennessee leads the all-time series 30-23.

why would you???

Here is the plain and simple--we have to have good play from Maze and Hopson(not great) in order to beat good teams. If they play good--distribute the ball, shoot for a good average(35-45%) and play solid defense--this team is capable of beating good teams on the road...on the flipside if Maze doesn't show up(Ole Miss,KY etc) and Hopson just shoots 3s and doesn't use his driving skills---then we lose.

The point to all this is the inside will always be there with (JP,Chism,Tyler,Negedu,BW)...but that is not good enough to beat good or mediocre teams.

A win in that game would go a LONG way toward nailing down our NCAA slot. Just hope the guys don't wilt in the spotlight again. A good showing would demonstrate that CBP's first three years weren't just lightning in a bottle and that the team was ready for the post-season. OTOH, another all-too-typical lethargic showing will be a MAJOR come-down for the team and fans alike.

Give SC their props they played in your face defense and must have had 100 blocks (or seemed that way) The arena was sold out for the first time i think they said ever, and they completely dominated us. So i think their game plan just made us look really bad. I probably won't post here again apparently it ruffles some peoples feathers and rightly so i might add, but you have been a class act toward me being here and for that i thank you.

UKblue02, don't worry about posting here, most Vol fans appreciate respectful posts from our rivals. Unfortunately that just happens to be a small minority of the outside posts we see. Hang out as long as you like ...

And thanks for the update on the game, I am pretty confident we can beat FL at their place, the SC game worries me.

Good luck at Florida, you might have them a little nervous after what happened at TBA but then again they might have a chip on their shoulder and be really fired up like SC was last night, after last night it wouldn't surprise me if we lost to LSU and Fla. I'm not saying Memphis's team this year is as good as last years but there's really no way for anybody to prove that it's not right now. Those loses were early. Please don't use ESPN to prove a point. They have never been partial to any team from the south except to some extent Fla. and Kentucky. They have a grudging respect at best in my oppinion. Memphis is a good team ("itsme" however has earned, on this site, the disrespect you offer).

I may disagree, but you can apparently make a good case without trashing anyone!? I'm not sure 4 CUSA should get in last year or this year but you could probably make a case for it. I could make (most years not this one) for 4 Southern conf. to get in. This year Davidson only. The problem with the tournament is every year you have teams left out because they are not in a "strong conf.". It's understandable because most people haven't heard of CUSA or Southern Conf. The SEC gets huge exposure.

Vol_Jokes writes:

I believe Memphis's record against the SEC is something like 14-3 over the last 4 or 5 seasons. Why not ask what our record against the big east was last year. Beating UConn and Georgetown was pretty fun. Let's see..what about Cincinnati. That's 3 we won that I can think of, 3-0. Don't think you can win many arguments when trying to argue with the team with the most wins in a season and a team the blew out the good teams on their way to the championship game. Honestly you look silly trying to argue.

DonJuan writes:

So Calipari doesn't want to play Tennessee in Knoxville or Memphis because both locations give UT the advantage. He understands what that sounds like, right?

As for recruiting, Calipari is welcome to try in Knoxville. But if the high school kids seeing UT playing one game in Memphis can hurt his hometown recruiting that much, then that in itself is something to think about.

And how would Nashville be different? There isn't a huge Memphis following here. I would love a game here, but I don't see how that would be great for Memphis fans.

Raynoch writes:

in response to Hoops22:

(This comment was removed by the site staff.)

Clearly if Tennessee is a top 3 basketball program in the SEC, Memphis has plenty to gain by playing us. Namely, strength of schedule and really, exposure. Correct me if I'm wrong, but last year's game in Memphis was the most viewed bball game in the history of ESPN.

Also, you are forgetting one enormous detail: Football. As much as you may like to ignor it, football plays a tremendous factor in the basketball series continuing. Tennessee has never had a single thing to gain by playing Memphis in football, but Memphis gets a huge payday every time we meet on the gridiron. And talk about no benefit of playing a home-and-home, Tennessee takes a gigantic risk by traveling to that hole that is the Liberty Bowl twice a decade. You people still swoon over the '96 game. When Calipari tried to discontinued the bball series earlier this decade, he failed because of your football program's need for the UT game. So you can make a really good argument that Tennessee controls every sports series with Memphis because of the amount of $$$ our football games make.

And as far as the series benefiting Tennessee by playing it in Nashville, UT plays in Middle Tennessee twice a year. We are already benefitting from playing in Nashville. We don't need to play a third game there.

Slystone writes:

in response to Jmxvo1:

That record means nothing when UT avoided the Tigers during the 80's. And you know the Tigers had classic teams back then. Bottom line is look at where the two teams are now. Look at the recruiting of late. Don't get me wrong. I like both teams, but Memphis has gone further in the NCAA than the Vols. On paper they will probably have a top recruiting class coming in. Whether that transcends to the hardwood is the challenge Coach Cal must under take. As for the Vols they desperately need some cadillac type guards and that will not happen until 2010.

Until Pearl came on the scene the Vols were getting stooge slapped around the SEC. So the 12-8 record UT has over the Tigers is not representive of two teams having played consistently over the last 30+ years. You have some gaps in the series. But what I enjoy is that the two coaches are willing to play and ESPN is recognizing the rivalry also. The negative comments spewed about each city needs to end. Just deal with the sport at hand. If you can't offer a solution to the problem in a City then why be negative about it.

I agree that it would help Memphis to join a stronger conference, but to me it seems the Big East has too many teams already. Does anyone know if the SEC has rules about letting other teams come in? Stokes44yrs writes:
