The personnel and styles of play have changed for both Florida and Tennessee. But the results have been the same.
UT keeps winning. Florida keeps losing.
And UT coach Bruce Pearl keeps trying to explain it.
It's actually easier for him to explain how he nearly became a human puddle on his first night of work at Florida's O'Connell Center three years ago. UT's 76-72 victory almost became a sidebar to the greater human drama being acted out at court side and poured into millions of televisions across the country via ESPN.
"I still get asked about it," Pearl said. "They still perceive me to be one of the sweatiest men in college basketball."
This wasn't about a few beads of sweat on the brow or an underarm badge of an impassioned, hard-working coach in the heat of battle. Pearl was soaked from the lapels to the cuffs of his pants. Albert Brooks didn't sweat that much in "Broadcast News."
"Working up a healthy sweat" never came to mind watching Pearl. Viewers wondered if he were ill.
"I was ill," he said. "That story never got written.
"I coached that game with 101 fever. I didn't want that discussed."
Pearl said he didn't feel bad, just a little hot and more than a little wet. The fever broke later that night, and he felt fine the next day.
Having endured a cram course in deep-southern heat and humidity, the native Northeasterner rethought his wardrobe.
"I will never wear a light suit (in Gainesville) again," he said.
That's just one more change that hasn't altered the course of the rivalry. Pearl's Vols will enter Sunday afternoon's game at the O'Connell Center with a 6-1 record against the Gators. Moreover, they were 3-1 against Florida's two national championship teams. Most recently, they routed Florida 79-63 in Knoxville at the end of January. The only time they lost with Pearl, they were without scoring star Chris Lofton, two years ago in Gainesville.
UT's success against Florida is magnified by Florida's success against everyone else. The SEC has produced only a few teams comparable to the Gators' back-to-back national champions. For further contrast, you have the UT-Florida football rivalry, which the Gators have dominated under coach Urban Meyer.
But when you cross the street from The Swamp to the O'Connell Center, the Power T regains its strength, the rivalry turns topsy-turvy and miracles occur in solid orange.
"Miracle" is Pearl's word, not mine. It's his first response to the question: "Have you got Billy Donovan's number?"
"We have had two miracles finishes (in victories against Florida)," he said. "Actually, three miracle finishes."
He then recounts Lofton's steal, C.J. Watson's deflection, and Dane Bradshaw's layup from the final frantic seconds of games past; then adds last year's "miraculous" comeback in Gainesville.
"If they win those games, nobody is asking us about (having Donovan's number)," Pearl said.
Although no miracle finish was necessary earlier this season, you hardly would characterize UT's one-sided victory as business as usual. A UT team that so often has been shaky on the perimeter made 12 of 28 3-point field-goal attempts in beating Florida at its own game.
It was just another reminder that UT basketball is the antithesis of UT football when it comes to Florida. The Gators bring out the worst in UT football. They bring out the best in UT basketball.
"There's no question that Florida means a lot to our athletic department," Pearl said. "It means a lot to (UT athletic director) Mike Hamilton. You compete with Florida, men and women, for the top spot for an overall athletic program.
"That combined with two national championship ... It's a game that our guys clearly get excited about playing."
And it doesn't matter whether the Vols are sinking are surging when they encounter the Gators. Pearl's first team struggled down the stretch, losing five of its last eight games, but it still managed to knock off the eventual national champions in the midst of that tailspin.
So even though UT has lost three consecutive SEC road games, you would expect it to be primed and ready for the Gators. Its coach will be ready, too, dressed for success in a very dark suit.

this is a game where you feel like the string is going to end....florida plays better at home than on the road....better stick with them early...if they get out to a big lead, it might be ole miss and kentucky all over again....maybe the players will bring that "focus" they are always talking about....we'll see.....

"sinking -or- surging", not "and". Beat them nasty gators! Reminds me of a chant we and the 'Noles had in the men's room at the Fiesta Bowl: "It's GREAT to HATE the Florida Gators, yes it's GREAT to HATE the Florida Gators..."

All I can say is good time for hopson to get 20 or 30, and let's make it 7-1! GO VOLS!

Just because he had a 101 fever doesn't mean that Florida didn't also turn up the heat. Both things could be true.

We really need this one. I'm afraid if we do nothing but beat Bama at home and lose to SC and Florida on the road, we're headed to the NIT unless we win a couple in the SECT.

I don't know if the Gators turn up the heat or not. I DO know that the fact that Pearl had a fever doesn't mean that they DON'T. Fairly simple logic.

I hate to say it, but I don't think Pearl will make it 7-1. This UT team does not do well at all on the road: Kansas (spanked); Kentucky (spanked); Ole Miss (spanked); Auburn (beaten barely by a bad team); Temple (spanked) - yes they did beat Vandy but that is it...young pups will not do well in that environment and I think FLA will finally hit on all cylanders against us... I'll be cheering the Big Orange, but the odds are definitely stacked against us...

Anyone with a pulse should recognize what is at stake for Tennessee in this game as well as their games against South Carolina and Alabama. Wins could salvage a disappointing season and turn it into an east division championship.
I'm not feeling it but Tennessee teams have surprised me before with monumental efforts. I'll never forget Dane Bradshaw's heroics in two of those games.
This is almost a last opportunity for the players on this team to show the kind of character it takes to win these kinds of games. I will be hopeful.

Good post richvol,I too would love to see this team finish up strong I'm sure we have the talent it's the chemistry aspect that concerns me the most. Quite frankly I'm not feeling it either.

richvol, good post, we should all be hopeful.
Dane Bradshaw ... good times, good times.
Go Vols!
VolFanNC writes:
Huge game for both teams. TN needs 2 out of 3 to make the tourney unless they do well in the SEC T. Florida is also on the bubble and needs 2 out of 3. They can't afford to lose a home game like this, but could win againast MSU and KY at home. If they lose to TN and KY they could be NIT bound. If TN loses to FL and SC could be NIT bound.
I have no idea who wins this as they both are too inconsistent. I think this is an easier game than the SC game, but will see if hopson, maze and chism get up for this one.
jsm67vol writes:
Agree with your response to richvol. This team has the talent, its the chemistry that they lack that keeps this team mediocre. That is one facet of the game Pearl can't coach them. We've seen glimpses of what this team is capable of, but they just don't have great chemistry. I too am hopeful, but I'm not feeling it either. If they make it to the big dance, I'm not sure they are consistent enough to advance. Go Vols!

With the tough schedule we have, it's good to have easier "rest" type games like florida to help you to heal up and regroup.

Most people here in FLA turn the heat on if it is 65 or lower.. Today 80 Sunday about 68 so we could have heat..
johnlg00#206211 writes:
That was against Oklahoma State, but I agree completely with your feelings about Dane. He has the things that are most lacking in this year's Vols--heart, hustle, mental toughness, and a never-say-die/team-first attitude. I'm tapping my feet, waiting for Rob's inevitable ritual of Dane-bashing....
jhayes0926#638474 writes:
this game will be easier than the SC game. We have Fla's number and this will be another win. chalk it up. With this win and Ala., we have NCAA lock and Fla is NIT bound. Take it to the bank zz.
tractoronthepole writes:
Go Vols beat the Gators, THE KEY to this game is Nick Calathes. I would take him over Meeks any day, he is their floor general. We need to pressure him and prevent his drives to the paint. Do that and hit a few threes and we will be in this game. Allow him to penetrate and it will be a long day.
