Storm Johnson impressed by UT coaches at Junior Day

It wasn’t just drizzle and overcast skies in Knoxville on Saturday. There was also a Storm in town.

One of the South’s best tailback prospects, Storm Johnson, was in attendance for Tennessee’s Junior Day – a camp designed to showcase UT’s wares to some of the region’s best prospects.

“It was great,” Johnson said via text message following his visit.

Johnson, who recently transferred from Buford, Ga., to Loganvlle, Ga., has scholarship offers from several schools, including Auburn, Florida State, Stanford and West Virginia. UT was one of the first to offer Johnson a scholarship when it did so in January.

At the time, Johnson said the Vols made an impression when recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron personally extended the invitation. Once again, UT’s coaches made an impression – this time during junior day.

“The coaches,” Johnson said when asked what he liked about the trip on Saturday. “They were down to earth and crazy in a good way.”

Johnson said the Vols ranked “very high” on his list of schools.

This is a very good sign!!! GO VOLS!
It gets my adrenaline going everytime I go to www.volquest.com and it has another prospect interested in the vols. These coaches have a lot of energy!

I hear you. I'm not nearly as obsessed about recruiting as some on here, except near Signing Day. I'm just glad our coaches don't feel the same way, and are out selling our program to underclassmen! Prepare the field, sow the seed, reap the crop, each in its own good time.

And yes, they are the three remaining highly-sought-after recruits nationally, which I think was his main question. EVERYBODY will know when these guys sign, and no one else is in their category.

Of course, but the key to good recruiting is to get the word out as widely and as early as possible. Nearly every top recruit, when he signs, cites some kind of long-standing relationship with some coach who was recruiting him "before anybody else knew who I was". You can't sell every prospect, but you can't make the sales unless people know your product and you ask them to buy it at some point, and you can never start doing that too early.

He will be playing in Loganville(Ga) this year. I believe this is the kid that played at Buford and then moved to Loganville. I will be sure and check him out in a game or two since Loganville is about a 20 min drive from where I live.

Exactly right Smokey. Let the coaches do their jobs, but we saw what happens before and as we are seeing after signing day. But, thanks for the article KNS.

Hooker said, "One of the South’s best tailback prospects". Storm may be good, but the best tailback in the south coming out in 2010 is Marcus Lattimore out of Byrnes H.S. in Duncan,SC. And no he doesn't even have the Vols on his list.

According to Rivals he does.

That was funny. I worry about a fan from another school that would spend that much time on stuff like this. Of course, if said fan works for the media, then it wouldn't be such a big deal to come up with this kind of thing.

Slystone writes:

Ctown - I stand corrected, thx. That's good news. I must have gotten on a older site. Hope we can get a visit from him.

No problem Sly. Yes. It would be great to secure a visit. Hopefully the stars will align and we can land this kid.

70+ prospects visit, and we get ONE quote via text message? Impressive.

From James Stone OL:

"I liked really how crisp and clear they were about everything," Stone said. "They put it all out there. They told it to you like it was. I like that style and I liked their intensity. I was more interested in learning about the staff and they get your attention."

From Markeith Ambles WR:

"It was awesome," Ambles said. "It wasn't what I expected. It wasn't like the old staff. The new staff is different and they are more high energy. They are smart. Coach Wilson set down and went over scheme and their offense which is going to be like Southern Cal."

From Barry Brunetti QB:

"Tennessee has always been up there," Brunetti said. "They are the home state school and they are in the SEC. It's Tennessee and you know it's a top program. The coaching staff dreams big and they know what the want to accomplish. It's just a great place."

Storm Johnson stats -

Ht: 6-foot-1
Wt: 210 lbs
Forty: 4.5 secs
Bench max: 370 pounds
Squat max: 490 pounds
GPA: 3.2
ACT: 20

Better start recruiting early on this one.

gohawks1 writes:

Johnson currently receiving only 1 star by Rivals, but that will change soon - all juniors haven't been rated yet. The 4.5 speed may cost him an extra star... we'll see.

My mistake - that was a Scout.com rating, not Rivals.

Yeah, he'll be one to watch for sure. I think the one star only means that he hasn't really been rated yet.

I agree. He has already received a 5-star rating by Scout. I can't find any stats on him except height and weight (6-0, 207). Got any more info?

gohawks1 writes:

Okay, I found this on Lattimore -

Ht: 5-foot-11
Wt: 210 lbs
Forty: 4.46 secs
Bench max: 270 pounds
Squat max: 440 pounds
Vertical: 32 inches
GPA: 3.3

TN has apparently already made an offer too.

many times at these camps the teams find a strong sleeper no one knows about. maybe they don't want to publicize who was there in order to keep them from getting noticed by other teams. just a thought.

just got the book "Meat Market" about coach O. It's pretty good reading about the recruiting process and tells alot about coach O's background..

You guys should read it if you get a chance. Mostly covers his days at Miss. but it still gives good insight on how he operates. I just hope he has mellowed some.

Good point. It is sometimes hard for fans clamoring for news, but a coach telling the world who he is recruiting can be like a general telling his battle plan to a reporter.

Just read on volquest that Denzel McCoy was equally impressed, but would like to hear some "committed" noise. Even though it's early and still have other possibilities that could change their minds, some early committs would help sway other top flight talent to us for 2010.
