UT gets to watch top juniors up close

Rain couldn't put a damper on Tennessee's Junior Day on Saturday. The Vols hosted nearly 100 prospects and some of the top high school players in the region.

Here are some notables:

n Markeith Ambles: One of the elite receiver prospects in the southeast, the wideout from Henry County High School in McDonough, Ga., has scholarship offers from most every school in the region.

UT is looking for more tall receivers. Already 6-foot-2, Ambles could grow enough to fit the bill.

n Barry Brunetti: The athletic quarterback from Memphis University School is one of the more intriguing prospects in the state. Ole Miss, Duke and Mississippi State reportedly have offered Brunetti a scholarship but it is unclear how he'll fit into UT's plans. The Vols are thought to be focusing on pro-style passers.

n Storm Johnson: UT was one of the first schools to offer the tailback from Loganville, Ga. Interest is growing in Johnson, who recently transferred from Buford, Ga.

Georgia could prove a formidable foe if it decides to make a strong push for Johnson, whose mentor, highly touted cornerback Branden Smith, signed with Georgia last month.

n Denzel McCoy: UT is one of many schools that have offered a scholarship to the defensive tackle from Northview High in Duluth, Ga. McCoy is one of the elite prospects in the Southeast and perhaps the nation.

n Jacques Smith: The defensive end from Ooltewah had high school coaches talking all last season. Now, college coaches are equally impressed. Likely the top prospect in the state, Smith committed to UT on Feb. 4.

n James Stone: One of the most coveted prospects on UT's board. The offensive lineman from Maplewood High in Nashville would fill a major need for UT's 2010 class. Immediate playing time will be a strong sell for Stone, who is one of the elite prospects in the state.

n Zak Tait: After suffering a serious knee injury during the 2007 season, the Catholic offensive lineman/defensive tackle sat out the 2008 season. He returns to the field for spring practice and once he proves he's healthy he will be one of the better prospects in the state.

Tait has one scholarship offer - from Colorado - but has several other schools interested. Stanford, Oregon and Georgia Tech have shown strong interest.

UT will judge Tait in spring practice.

n Brian Vogler: The tight end from Brookstone School in Columbus, Ga., would be a great fit for UT, which has seen two tight ends move to other positions in the past week. Vogler is one of the best tight ends in the region.

THOUGHT TO BE? If not, then somebody has some 'splaining to do about why Tajh Boyd wasn't welcome with open arms.

Biggie, where in the wide world of sports have you been lately, brother?

Did I mention really.

Yes, we need to load up on OLs and DLs, plus a couple of QBs.

Do you think that Jacques Smith can talk any of these guys into committing before time to go home?

What about OC Brown ? Wouldn't he also be a top priority? I'm surprised you didn't do a write up on him as well. Vogler would be a good catch even if we do land Charles.

Charles seems to be the quiet one of the bunch. I've been looking for some news on him, but I haven't found anything. I did hear that his high school coach is ready for him to make a decision though. He's already scheduled the press conference for Friday.

I'm sure they are taking a look at em.

And remember the fence coach Kiffin talked about. That might give a few more borderline Tennessee kids a chance.

I'm not saying Brown is borderline just speakin of the coaches opinions, not mine.

I sent the info to a contact at Ogg Hall up in Wisconsin and that was the general consensus of the evaluation of the information imparted by me to them Re; Above listed column.

Keep the darters hidden. Big darter demand coming up. It's in the stimulus plan.

Thanks.

Doing some work on a new hill's coat-of-arms and so far we have a Ogg in the center extracting a Bud can from a ditch. Darters and herons will be the next to be added.

Stay tuned.

Blog exclusive: Not enough people are talking to ZZ so he is trying to get you to ask for his source. However, I have my own exclusive. ZZ's Mom is giving 2 for 1's at Pull and Park trailer park. Mention this add and get a coupon for a reverse reach around.

Sorry for the distraction. Now back to the football talk.

I know. That seems to be, you know, the only thing Oku says, you know. No, I personally do not know, or anybody else as far as that goes, you know. I thought that's why they interviewed him, so we may know something, but I still don't know anything, you know.

I wouldn't either. Can't say I would 100% drop out of the race for him if he is that good but I wouldn't get on my knees for him either. I am just afraid he will end up getting us put on probation.

Tennessee has somewhere around 70 guys here for the day. Obviously, the weather was terrible and some who said they were coming didn't make it.

The two biggest in-state guys in town were James Stone and Barry Brunetti. Barry told Austin Price that he really enjoyed getting to know the coaches more and isn't in any hurry, but he likes Tennessee a lot.

Yea I agree. Could be we work with what we have already and I'm fine with that. Those million dollar recruiters are also million dollar coaches and I'm sure can make something happen even if we don't get OKU or Brown. Either way I'm OK. :)

Thanks for the link, this guy actually knows what the deal is:

"I think SEC fans/teams are reacting much in the same way. Fans and coaches of other teams love to see Tennessee football spiraling into irrelevancy and their outrage at Kiffin’s largely innocuous comments are most likely in response to the programs productive movements. If they can discourage the program’s growth by repeating the anti-Kiffin mantra, they will do so ad nauseum until the notion becomes almost factual."

In other words, the rest of the SEC is nervous, not that any of our respective troll-boy squatters would ever admit it.
