Why have a poll, how about some real investigative reporting, like were there any commits from todays U.S. Army All Star game, or from Armour All Game????
highVOLtage writes:
If the estimates are accurate:
$5 million for Fulmer & staff vs. $6 million for Kiffin & staff.
Is the new staff worth an extra $1 million?
I would have to say yes. But we'll see.
BTW, how much are Florida and Alabama currently paying for their coaches?

No, Hamilton already said that we will be approximately middle of the road in SEC with spending on the staff. I think we are getting a better than middle of the road SEC staff.

dude, Saban is now over 4mill all by his self with his kick-ins for this season's performance. If we want to play big boy football, we have to first buy big boy underpants. I think we are upgrading just fine from our comic book underoos days.
Gigavol writes:
Why can the poll not read YES, NO, UNDECIDED?
The poll author is attempting to control the outcome with the questions.
The first question is borderline negligent:
yes..snip.. give *BACK* to the university? That money never was at the University to start with. The UTAD gives millions to UT as it is.
The negative responses have reasons that push people to not select them:
No..YOU GOTTA SPEND MONEY TO MAKE MONEY?
say what? Who can agree with this? The goal is to win games.
Then there is the ole' bountiful supply (including Fulmer) subliminal message:
No...good coaches are hard to find.
Good coaches are not hard to find. Great coaches and recruiters that currently have jobs and are otherwise highly demanded are hard to land, though.
Lane Kiffin is doing it, though. Deal with it.

TennesseeTuxedo writes:
If Fulmer had not been so selfish, he would have approached Mike Hamilton to offer to reduce his pay and take the extra cash to go out and hire the best coaches in the land.
Of course we know that Fulmer's nationwide searches were limited to destinations within a tank of gas from Knoxville. Fulmer would have taken any extra money given to him and either put it towards his own pay or give a little extra to his current assistants. He would have never sought out top coaches out of fear that they would show him up.

I voted undecided because I honestly think only time will tell if the money is well spent. I do think these guys will get the job done.

The college football landscape is changing - if you want top notch coaching staffs, you'll have to start re-evaluating the budget. No, I don't think TN is spending too much for its staff.
A better question would be: "How much MORE money will this new coaching staff bring to the university?"
whybenegative writes:
Why does the KNS sports department insist on keeping something stirred up all the time? Why can't the story just be about a great staff being assembled? Why do you all ALWAYS have to go negative?
It isn't the university's money in the first place. My guess is the athletic department, other than the state of tn, is the single biggest cash supporter of the university. I don't assume that will change. Do you make any mention of that? Of course not that would be putting a positive spin on something.
You guys look for negative stories to run or something you can give us your own personal opinion on! How about this, we don't care for your opinions! How about just reporting on the sports news.

I think it's funny as hell that this staff/Kiffin is not kissing the rear of the local media. Hearing the Tuba player about cry last week on the air whining about UT not giving him an interview with Monte Kiffin was hilarious.
Newsflash Senseless and Animal: You guys are not special. Jimmy Hyams, Brent Hubbs, Chris Low and Mike Griffith should all be ashamed of themselves for pour-mouthing the UT program like they did when Fulmer was on his way out. I still can't believe those guys claimed UT would have trouble getting coaches to come here!! All four of those morons need to be run out of town when this staff is filled out.
As for money, if UT wins, the program rakes in tons of cash. Period. Enough to support the entire athletic department and even the women's sports that lose tons of money. The REAL POLL you idiots should have up here?
"Should the University of Tennessee have 2 Athletic Departments?"
Grow a pair and run that poll...

No, but I believe I am greatly overspending for my daily paper. First it was the size reduction- then the price increase- then the fuel surcharge- then the stock section removed and now the continuous ridicule of our new football staff by writers who wish they could go back to the "good old days" of Coach Fulmer. Heck, I wish I could go back to the good old days of true professional News Sentinel writers like Tom Siler & Marvin West. Take a poll on that
sebivens#462100 writes:
Its hard to even compare Fulmers staff to Kiffen. I mean Phil needed an OC and Hamilton gave him maybe 200,000 the find one. All he could get for those $$$$ was Clawson, the only man who single handly destroyed 100 years of UT football tradition and cost a man who dedicated almost 40 years to the University.
As a diehard Vol fan I hope Kiffen and his high dollar staff does well and will support them. Honestly old man Kiffen has me fired up. I cant wait to win again, and become the Vols of Fulmers hayday of the late 90's. But I can't wait for the day Hamilton screws up big and his head is on a platter in honor of Big Phil....I just he was given this kind of money to build his staff

How about thwoin in some breaking news from time to time. If it were not for the info I get from the comments I wouldnt come to this garbage site.

It is called investinging in the core athletic program/product. An investment that should pay for itself is short order. The school would have lost more money next year that what is investing this year to stem the tide. Stem the tide, gotta love the sound of that.

The money coming in to pay these guys is from ESPN and CBS.
I wonder where our program would be today if Dickey had shelled out about $100,000 more to Rodney Garner in 1998.
I think what you will see is some of these staff members be around for a few years then move on to head coaching positions. If the program is successful then LK will be able to bring in younger replacements at a lower cost.
Whether you were a supporter of the previous staff or a detractor the general feeling was that Fulmer's staff often did not adjust well during games. I don't think that will be a problem anymore.
And there should also be no doubt about the level of coaching players are getting at any position.
Now all they have to do is get the athletes.
GoVols!

I have to agree with this. What a pointless poll! Are we not trying to improve? Shouldnt a better staff cost more??
I think the person that put this on here is the guy that always "sees the glass half empty". The same kind of guy that wanted Fulmer ousted now wines and complains about the fact that we are spending some of that revenue (in a diverse way not like Nick Satan at Bama) trying to be relevant in the SEC and back in national contention again.
a true Vol fan would not put a meanigless poll like this on here,,, just a media ploy to stir the pot
koamalina writes:
It seems that this is a better way to spend the money allocated for coaches than to spend most of it to pay the head coach then pay the minimum for assistant coaches. AC's do most of the actual coaching while the HC often is more of an admistrator, and spending more to get better AC's makes sense.

"Report: Oklahoma coordinators' pay increases by 18 percent: Defensive coordinator Brent Venables and offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson both received 18 percent raises for 2008, according to their salary figures obtained by The Oklahoman through the Oklahoma Open Records Act. Venables -- who has coached at OU since 1999 -- will make $315,000 in 2008, up from the $265,000 he made in 2007. Wilson -- OU's offensive coordinator for the last two seasons -- will earn $260,000 in 2008, an increase from the $220,000 he made in 2007. Outside of Venables and Wilson, defensive backs coach and co-defensive coordinator Bobby Jack Wright -- who has been at OU since 1999 -- will earn the most at $225,000. After Venables and Wilson, quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel received the staff's biggest percentage raise. Heupel's 13.3 percent bump increases his yearly salary by $16,000 up to $136,000. (The Oklahoman)

That's at least $6,636,000 for 5 (five) coaches. Is UT that far out of line? Oh yeah, in addition to this Stoops just got a $3 million bonus for staying 10 years. Not a bad investment in my opinion!
Stop bi tc hing Vol fans (and KNS), if we win it's a bargain, if not, drop back & punt.

It wasn't just the money that handcuffed Fulmer. Apparently Kippy Brown would have come back to UT as offensive coordinator last year, but Fulmer wouldn't give Kippy the freedom to bring the assistant coaches he wanted.
