Greg King is still considering the same four schools he’s been comparing for weeks. Two, however, have pulled out in front.
“Texas Tech and Tennessee right now,” the 6-foot-3, 200-pound linebacker from Melrose High School in Memphis said on Wednesday.
With a month left until National Signing Day on Feb. 4, that could certainly change.
King has official visits set for Arkansas (Jan. 30) and Miami (Jan. 23). He visited Tech last month and will take a trip to UT on Jan. 16.
King is a high priority for UT’s new coaching staff, which hopes to put a recruiting stranglehold on the state of Tennessee.
Coach Lane Kiffin visited King last month. Defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron were in Memphis to visit with King on Monday.
Defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, who hasn’t recruited in almost three decades after working in the NFL, impressed King.
“He treated me like I was already with him,” King said. “He was shaking my hand all crazy. He’s a cool person. He’s laid back. He was like ‘I’m just trying to get back into it.’ ”
It shouldn’t take Orgeron nearly as long to get back in a recruiting groove. Orgeron only coached one year in the NFL, last season with the New Orleans Saints, before building his reputation as one of the nation’s top recruiters at coaching stops at Souther California, Miami and Ole Miss.
“He’s too crazy,” King said of Orgeron. “He was recruiting me at Ole Miss. He always talks. I was like ‘Wow.’ ”
King is mindful of playing for a coaching staff with so much NFL experience — and almost sounded committed as he described the advantages.
“You get to learn some of the best defenses that have ever been coached,” King said. “I’m ready for it.”

Hey, looks like it's all orange from here out! I still like Coach fulmer and buzz peterson, history will be kind to them and also to our outgoing president. I predict that all bush haters and foolmore people will be totally forgotten by history. And why not, how many famous crybabies are there in history? NUMBER ONE

Tennessee or Texas Tech
Hall of Fame Defensive Coordinator coupled with a foaming-at-the-mouth line coach or chase Big 12 offenses all over the field for 60 minutes only to "hold" the likes of Oklahoma and Texas to 40 and 50 points....
Come on, King Greg... easy decision... don the Orange!!!

Sounds good, reel em in Coach O and Monte!

This kid can flat out play!!! I went to several of Whitehaven's games this year, and he gets sideline to sideline in a flash!! WAY underrated; should without a doubt be at least a 4 star. Eddie should be able to seal this one up for us.

..Plus he looks really mean. I like.

Also getting interest from Chris Freeman 3* OL from WI, Ronnie Wingo Jr. 4* athlete from MO, Mike Edwards 3* DB from Ohio.

I wonder where Monte will want to play Gerald Williams...LB or DE? He should have been on the field this past year just like Brandon Warren and a dozen others.

A couple of interesting quotes from Marlon Brown:
"I'm going to make all of my visits for sure," Brown said. "I won't decide anything until I get back from my Tennessee trip on that last weekend."
"Georgia's not my leader, nobody is in front," he said. "I like all those schools recruiting me, they're all real close. That's why I'm not going to decide anything before I finish with my visits."

Mike Edwards will commit to us on his visit. Hopefully he can help us with his teamate Marcus Hall. It would be huge to land both.

I am predicting that Kiff and Co. will bring us a top 10 class for 09. With a couple of stud receivers, rbs, lbs--maybe not the stud dts,ols or qbs--that will be for next years top 3 class. Book it!

He could drive out to Whiteface or Sundown and look around.
In a new 'Lade, maybe.
UTandETSUfan writes:
I could be wrong, but doesn't that give us atleast 5-8 DB's?
Basketball_Jones writes:
Who cares....those guys are fast and can be used in many ways. Ohio St has verbals from 3 DB's ranked in the Top 10. This staff will put players on the field who will give us the best chance to win.

We're gonna play 11 Defensive backs next year on defense...

Marcus Hall, Peter White, and Quinton Washington are the big nasties that we need.
Maybe one of them will pan out at DT, too. We are in dire need of interior linemen.

He and Chris Donald will hopefully see alot of snaps in 2010.

Play for the laid back offensive genius in the middle of hot azz west TX or in front 100,000 fans and a couple of fired up coaches like ED and Monte. This one seems like a no brainer to me. Come on in boys the water is fine!!!

Seems like we might be short a few db's. Doubt Morley and Vinson last through next year.

I must admit, after listening to Monte's intro speach, I can see how a player would want to play for, not only a proven coach, but a personality like his.
I know the Flar-dauh posters are gonna tear this kid down as no more than an elevated pop warner player with a half star rating, but I'd like to see him as well as any 10 of the top 20 players in Tennessee wearing Orange, that's TENNESSEE Orange. Oh, but that's just me.
yeavols#228407 writes:
Ok who needs to read the story...Tennessee or Texas Tech? I'll let you decide this one..
NoogaVol55 writes:
I see him taking his visits the same way we talked about A. Phillips taking his...probably just wants to see different schools and different parts of the country...just a vacation.
I also don't see Texas Tech being a title contender any time soon. The will put up numbers and be a solid team, but I view them more of a flash team that peaks every now and then. Give it a year or two..and the Big Orange will be back to championship form.
Go Vols!!!
Kiffin_fan writes:
I totally disagree with Jimmy Hyams that Lane had a head start on recruiting by being hired on Dec. 1... He is a year and a half behind the other schools the way I see it. How can you get a head start on a guy you've been recruiting for a month when all the other schools have been on him for 18 months?? If he gets any then it should be considered a great get, given his head start and all... I wanted to call him today but forgot to take my phone with me ... anyone else agree??? Or just because of his reputation at recruiting should we have a bunch lining up already??? just my thoughts...
rabidvol1998 writes:
He obviously means a head start over what most new coaches get and the fact that TN already had a good class.
His statement is relative, not absolute.
Kiffin_fan writes:
I think the media too a (too large of degree) spins the minds of the fans... Its way to early to judge any of it IMO
