New coaching staff a bonus for Gordon

Tennessee further secured its position with commitment Eric Gordon.

“It was great,” the 5-foot-9, 185-pound cornerback from Hillsboro High School said Sunday following his official visit this weekend. “Anybody can tell you they have a great coaching staff but they do. When you get up there, it’s hands on. All the coaches from the NFL, they’re there for a reason.”

Gordon said he was most impressed with the instruction from UT’s coaches, a preview of how he’ll be coached.

“They let you know what you’re going to do, when you’re going to do it and how you’re going to do it,” Gordon said. “Everything we did was treated top of the line.”

Gordon committed to UT shortly after Lane Kiffin was named coach on Dec. 1. Gordon also considered Oklahoma, Miami and Alabama.

Gordon, who is the brother of former Mississippi State basketball player Jamont Gordon, is the News Sentinel’s sixth best prospect in the state.

Well, who peed in your Post Toasties?

You act as if you're the only one here who was willing to give Kiffin a chance. Why not back up your little diatribe by identifying those who posted before you who are guilty of your assertions?

And as for getting a girlfriend, that may be okay with your wife, but I don't believe my wife would have a sense of humor about that.

That's why I mentioned that.

No disrespect intended torward any players past or present, but the truth of the matter is that there has been some dead weight around the program the past several years. There have also have been some guys that never set foot on campus so the time and effort spent recruiting them goes to waste.

With the tougher stance the NCAA is taking with the APR's, it seems to be more important than ever to recruit guys who will make it to school and actually make the grades once they get here. It's a fact of life that not every recruit will pan out, but, with the money and effort involved now, the elite programs can afford to be picky. Hopefully, Kiffin puts the Vols into that situation in short order.

I agree. I feel that last year we had some pretty good offensive players that were put in an unfamiliar system with inadequate preparation. I think even Clawson admitted that the offensive team never had confidence in his system.

I think each school has 25 scholarships available to offer per NCAA rules. You can see how many we have offered out already from verbal commits. The remaining 7-8 will go to the other prospects to commit. Once the scholarships are used up, anyone else would have to be a walk-on.
Fellow Vol fans, please correct me if I am wrong. I too have wondered with about 30 or so propects visiting, how do we pass out the remaining scholarships?

I too believe we have talent on our team. Good Talent. Not great talent. Great talent is what you need to compete with LSU, Georgia, Florida, and the other big guns in the country. That is the primary reason why we have not been able to compete. As I look at the 2009 commitment list for UT I see a good recruiting class. And then I look at LSU, Alabama, and Florida's recruiting classes and we do not even come close. I believe LSU has 4-5 5 star athletes committed this year. They are signing 2 great blue chip quarterbacks to back up Jordan Jefferson, a 5 star true freshman, they signed last year. If we want to compete with those teams we need better players and more of them. When we get to that point then I will say we have a chance. Our fans can say what they want but we have not been pulling great talent for some time now. When I mean great talent I mean Percy Harvin opposed to Gerald Jones. Or Patrick Turner opposed to Josh Briscoe. Or Brandon Spikes oppsed to Rico McCoy. Guys....The difference is night and day. Until then Im affraid we will be second tier to these programs. I believe Lane Kiffin has the right vision in mind but only time will tell. I prefer to reserve judgement and stay cautiously optomistic.

I very seriously doubt that you have ever been so selfless.

Simple--we won't get them all. I would be surprised if anyone thought we would! The good thing about the numbers is that the guys know that if they want to come here, they had better speak up, at least to the coaches, WELL before signing day.

I agree with you. Tennessee has been just filling slots at times with wasted scholarships for guys that never had a chance to play at a SEC level. Kiffin has put a stop to that.

Good players can beat great ones however, with great coaching and hard work...see Utah. Our coaching has been subpar for years and favoritism reared it's ugly head in decisions that determined playing time.

Yes,we need better players but it won't take as long as some think if we get the most out of what we already have. It is ridiculous though to expect a NC or even an SEC title in 2 to 3 years. However,I can easily see Kiffin having UT back at the top in 5 years.

3 recruiting feel good stories on the same day? WOW...I am shocked, but I'll take it. These are the stories that make you feel good again about our program. We have endured enough jokes, obnoxious comments, and spurrious/slanderous remarks about our program from everyone. I only hope that Kiffin and Company can make T a program feared again when the visiting team plays at Neyland Stadium, we get some of the best recruits, win championships, and compete with other schools across the country. As always..GO VOLS!

I think that everyone in the country needs to improve on their talent to compete with florida, but your comparisons to the four and five star players i dont think are valid. UT has alot of four and five star players on the team right now, I just dont think the coaching was on par with the players. with the exception of last year our recruiting classes indicated that we should have been a top five team year in and year out, so I dont put as much stock in the rankings of players. I put stock in coaching those highly ranked players. I think if urban has crompton he is a totally different player
