Tennessee's Davey Sandgren and John-Patrick Smith won twice Sunday to win the SEC Coaches' Indoor Doubles Championship played at the University of Kentucky. The title is UT's first at the SEC Indoors since 2002.
"It's a great result for the guys," UT head coach Sam Winterbotham said. "Obviously, the SEC is the strongest conference in the country and to come into the indoors and win the tournament and be able to say you're the best doubles team in the best conference in the country is something they should be really proud of."
Sandgren and Smith, the NCAA singles runner-up a year ago, beat LSU's Neal Skupski and Michael Venus, 8-6, to capture the title, UT's first since Mark Dietrich and Peter Handoyo won doubles in 2002.
"Honestly, we're just doing our job and doing what we came here to do," Smith said.
The duo also beat Antoine Benneteau and Joey Burkhardt of Florida, 8-5, in the semifinals Sunday morning.
Before doubles, Sandgren and Smith each had quarterfinal singles matches. Smith beat 28th-ranked Jonas Berg of Ole Miss in three sets. Sandgren dropped his match to David Britton of Ole Miss, 6-4, 6-4.
Smith will play Britton in today's semifinals.
Women's Tennis: With victories in both her singles and doubles contests, sophomore Rosalia Alda paced the No. 24 University of Tennessee women's tennis team on the second day of the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Alda beat Lindsey Howard of Michigan, 6-3, 6-1, then teamed up with Maria Sorbello to beat Duke's Amanda Granson and Jessi Robinson, 8-3. Lady Vols Samantha Orlin and Zsofia Zubor also won singles matches, while Jennifer Meredith and Natalie Pluskota won in doubles.

It's a Tennessee tradition, dominating doubles in the SEC; way to go Davey and JP! Hopefully Davey's younger brother Tennys (ranked 34 ITF - 6th highest of US players in the world junior rankings) is considering UT? It would be great to get him and Rhyne Williams. GO VOLS!
