Ole Miss did what it had to do during top football prospect Marlon Brown’s official visit this past weekend.
The Rebels stayed relevant by improving their once tenuous position among the schools chasing the highly touted receiver from Memphis.
“It moves them up a little bit,” the 6-foot-5, 205-pound receiver from Harding Academy in Memphis said Monday of the effect the Ole Miss visit had on his ranking of potential schools.
Just how much remains to be seen. The Rebels were a late addition to Brown’s list. The News Sentinel’s top prospect in Tennessee replaced LSU with Ole Miss last week.
Brown said he enjoyed his trip to Oxford as he headed home on Monday afternoon.
“It was alright,” Brown said. “It was straight.”
Brown said he believes that Ole Miss will be a finalist throughout the remainder of his recruitment. Brown has said he will make an announcement on Feb. 4, National Signing Day.
Brown is also considering UT, Georgia, Florida and Ohio State, which he admitted last week had an edge on Ole Miss.
The draw to Oxford is simple. With rising junior Jevan Snead at quarterback, the Rebels have one of the most solid offenses on Brown’s list.
Of Brown’s other finalists, Florida has the best quarterback situation once Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow announced he would return for his senior season.
Ohio State has rising sophomore Terrelle Pryor but not the pro-style offense that Brown would benefit from.
Many believe Brown is mainly considering UT and Georgia despite the questions surrounding each school’s quarterback position.
The Vols have three quarterbacks returning this season who played extensively and struggled in 2008. Georgia will have to replace Matthew Stafford, who opted to forgo his senior season and enter the NFL draft.
Brown has denied that UT and Georgia lead for his services.
Ole Miss has Snead, who was one of the surprise standouts in the SEC last season.
“I think the keys to the offense are the receivers,” Brown said of Ole Miss’ attack. “I think I could come in and make an impact.”
Brown said he watched film with Ole Miss’ coaches and attended the Rebels basketball game during his trip.
Brown will visit Florida this weekend and UT on Jan. 30. He has already visited Georgia and Ohio State.

Doubt it moves anything "up or "down". He knows now where he's headed, imo.
MusicCityVol writes:
we'll get him on that final visit. as much as he has been holding out I don't think he will have a decision made by the 30th. he'll come to Knoxville where the best recruiting staff in college football will gobble him up.

"first" of all lets hope that with him visiting us last that we leave the lasting impressions on him i would love to see him in orange
GO VOLS!!!!!!!!

Wasn't a good basketball game to watch if you were a Rebel fan. Anyway I sure hope CLK has a plan for us at QB. If he does and can show that to Brown we might get him.

Nice move Hooker. Now the locals are gonna get all lathered up.

Once again who will throw him the ball for the next two years at least? Ole Miss and Florida have great QB's now.
supersteve17 writes:
I really don't think he knows for sure right now. He is a thoughtful kid who is trying to evaluate what is best for his future. I think he probably also still longs for an opportunity to give two sports a try in college (basketball and football and he might just be a good enough athlete to pull that off). That said, I hope that he becomes a Volunteer!

Without a doubt.

Good luck Ole Miss. Next.

This kid sounds like a bright one... if you heard the interview at the UA game it sounded like he'd do well to spell cat if he was spotted the C and T. Good thing he doesn't have to learn that complex Claw-fense.

Frankly I'm tired of hearing about him. I mean he isn't the best out their you know. He thinks he is, but I've seen way better. He doesn't have burning speed. I think he loves the media more than football lol. Can we say drama king!

Florida = limited playing time.
Georgia = on the way back down.
Ohio State = 0-9 All-Time vs the SEC in Bowl Games.
Ole Miss = snicker, giggle.
There's only one logical conclusion - UT.

anyone know if we are still using all 3 planes for recruiting?
2 are in Bammer and one is going to go to Lexington KY, just wondering if we are still using all of them

So who will be throwing next year? The same guys that showed nothing this year. Two years from now we might pull in a highly touted recruit and the odds that he will be a stud as a true freshmen are not good at all going on past history. So please explain to me how far off base I am. Please try to speak as a grown up as well. Thanks Mgmt.

Rivals.com just reported that AJ was in T-town over the weekend and will not come to Knoxville. I'm shooting for a big class in 2010. Anything we get in 09 is just gravy. Staff was put together too late to make much headway this year. Go Vols!
gohawks1 writes:
Harvin is definitely going to open the door for someone, but Florida has several good receivers returning next year along with 2 other incoming freshmen WRs (4-star and a 5-star). PT could be limited for a year or two.
He could see action very quickly at UT, I'm thinking.

Once again Bama987 has shown his total and complete ignorance. Lance Thompson filed for divorce, his wife stated irreconciable differences. That was reported by the Al.com. Poor Bama boy...always trying to stir the pot with bogus reports. There is no report that AJ has decided to bunk with Fluker or that he has cancelled his visit. It is widely reported that Kiffin is coming after AJ pretty hard. In fact, the plane was in Mobile, AL again. Hey, just sheer speculation on my part..But BamaBanger..why don't you find some friends to go hang out. I know you are pretty upset about Tennessee violating your space. Get over it. Bama was something, but will always and forever be nothing now.
yeavols#228407 writes:
ok I didnt see that report..i looked for it..I don't think anyone really thought he would change his mind, but wrecking Bama's nerves is the goal.

Now onto business. I can't see anywhere that he's wanting a school that might offer, say, Engineering. Or zoology. Or microbiology. Does anybody know what major he's interested in? That should be more important than whether or not they run the pro set or have a returning quarterback. Don't you think?
Maybe he's undecided on that part.

Who said: "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"?
Cmon Bammer. We had a President who got ****s in the Oval Office. Nobody cared. A lot of kids don't even know their fathers. I guess you and the other Bammers are pure as the driven snow. Are you going to throw some stones based on your perfect life?
VolGraduate writes:
Unless you can accurately predict the future you are an idiot. We have three capable qbs on the roster. I say capable b/c they have the ability to be good QB in the SEC. They all showed glimpses of this last season.
I lean towards blaming Clawson for the inadequate qb play last year. Do you remember Ainge before and after Cut came on the scene? Do you remember Crompton before Clawson took over? Cut affected Ainge in a positive way and Clawson affected Crompton (and the rest of the offense) in a negative way. Point is, the coach has a tremendous effect on these young QBs and history only shows us that coaching can change a QB
s performance from one season to the next.
Even if you are correct about the upcoming season why would you say a freshman QB can't lead a team? Do you remember Peyton Manning, Casey Clausen and Eric Ainge playing as freshmen? You should b/c they all had a great deal of success. History is on my side on this argument....idiot!!!!
And if you are the "Mgmt." we are all in big, big trouble.

The NCAA needs to pass a rule making it a violation for these kids to be interviewed before signing day. This stuff is getting ridiculous. I'm surprised they don't ask him what brand of TP he uses.
baldfan writes:
The kid seems pretty egotistical, but . . . we definitely need help at wide receiver.
I have to say, the more I read about CLK's recruiting, staff, and objectives, the more comfortable I feel about our team's direction.
Go to ell Tony Barnhardt and Paul Finebaum!

I would go down the list of all the 5 Star and 4 Star QB's that didn't do anything as Freshmen or beyond but it would take pages to compile that list. You do have a nice 3 picked out though. Please try to step out of the Vols history for a moment and act like you have a clue about anything outside of Knoxville. It would really help your case. I'm keeping my eye on you the dumb is very strong in you, very strong.

I'm with you all the way. It's like they think they are in the nfl combine and about be drafted. They love the drama and no one can denie that. That's why I'm sick about hearing Marlon Brown he's the perfect example of that. You know he just loves seeing his name get brought up time and time again. It's all show people. Calm down he's coming. All the other schools have proven way better receiver and he knows deep down he'll sit on the bench at the others. As much as he likes attention he will come here because he knows he has chance to shine and be in the spotlight agin.

Ole Miss was a fluke last year. Nutt won with Orgeron's recruits and won some games it shouldn't have on sheer luck. UT will get Brown and they will compete next year IMO. The qb play was atrocious at best last year, but it is hard to pass when you have 300 lb. defensive lineman chasing you. The line play was the largest problem last year.

In whose opinion? The series is almost even in wins and losses and bowl games are almost even. So where do you get that BAMA is a lot better? The Bear, won a lot of games when the football world saw very little parity, but even though he would be a winner today, he wouldn't win as much. Face it, the Bear is dead.
