Daryl Dickey named interim AD at West Georgia

Former Tennessee quarterback Daryl Dickey has been named interim athletics director at the University of West Georgia, the university announced Tuesday.

Dickey, the son of former Vol athletic director Doug Dickey, completed his first year as football coach at the school last season after spending six years as quarterback coach at Florida State and four seasons as head coach at Presbyterian College.

Dickey, whose team finished 0-9 in his first year, will retain his responsibilities as football coach.

He is best remembers by UT fans for leading the Vols in a shocking 35-7 upset of Miami in the 1986 Sugar Bowl. He took over for starter Tony Robinson after Robinson was injured in the Alabama game and helped UT to a 9-1-2 record.

He replaces Ed Murphy, who retired after 15 years at the job.

Tell me why it is confusing. A former UT QB led us to one of the greatest wins in UT history, and he was just appointed AD at another school. Pretty clear to me.

Congrats Daryl...wish you much success in your new appointment. Hmmmm....seems that I remember that it was coach Bobby Bowden that we defeated in the Sugar Bowl and not Jimmy Johnson. Have my gears stripped so much that I cannot remember that game and how Keith and Broyles continually reminded the viewers that Florida State and Testaverde would make a come-back, and win the game? I still drag the tape out and enjoy one of the greatest events in Vol football history. It is a classic in the true sense of the word! Go LRGARNG!

Except for their first drive, Miami's Vinny Testaverde spent most of the night on his back under a pile of Vol defenders. Daryl Dickey was awsome with the short passes moving the offense down field drive after drive. Toward the end of the game one of the announcers said, "I jotted a note here earlier. What if Daryl Dickey out performs Vinny Testerferde?"

Yeah, Right!!

Coach Ken Donnahue's best game as the DC.

I was in the Super Dome for this game and I will have to admit I do not remember much about the 4th quarter, thankfully I taped it. (They sell mixed drinks and beer in the Dome) I do remember all the Tennessee Fans taking over the French Quarter and all the bars and drink carts renaming the Hurricanes (drinks) Volunteers as you could barely find any Miami fans!

I think Chris White returned one of Vinny's passes for a TD and the backbreaker in this one. Jeff Powell ran all over them and of course Dale Jones was all over the place.

Daryl Dickey was steady as a rock that year and in that game.

Great game, good luck Daryl!

Oh yeah one more thing I remember asking the Miami fans after that game, the few we could find, what time was it in Miami.......wait for it......35 to 7!

That was one of my two favorite bowl games that I attended. Good luck in your new AD job, Daryl.
