Grateful Cain ready to play

Center told knee on most days 'sore, sore, sore'

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Kelley Cain was hoping that this women's basketball season would be all about playing.

Tennessee's center still is hoping - while she waits, wonders and endures down time and discomfort related to her surgically repaired right knee.

"Pray about it, that's all I can do really is just pray about it and hopefully it will get better - in time this will get better,'' she said.

Cain is cleared to play when No. 10 Tennessee (14-3, 3-1 SEC) faces SEC-rival Arkansas (11-7, 0-3) on Thursday night at Bud Walton Arena. Tipoff is 8 p.m.

To date, Cain has missed five games, including last Sunday against South Carolina, and been limited in others. The 6-foot-6 redshirt freshman hasn't played more than 20 minutes in a game and has reached that workload just twice.

In terms of actual lost games, a concussion suffered during a preseason practice has been the primary culprit. Accidentally bumping heads with a male practice player cost her four games.

Still, the most painful, vexing problem involves her right knee, which underwent a surgical procedure on Dec. 11, 2007, to correct the patella subluxation. Although the knee is structural sound, Jenny Moshak, the Lady Vols associate athletic director for sports medicine, said that it can take up to 1 1/2 years before the joint feels totally better.

"I have a feeling this is going to be sore, sore, sore and the next day it's not sore, whenever that will be,'' Moshak said.

In the meantime, the knee is sensitive to basketball-related activity, especially physical contact. Cain went down during the first half of last Thursday's game at Mississippi State after the back of her knee took the brunt of a collision with a State player. She sat out the second half and then missed Sunday's game.

"It's really hard,'' Cain said. "I always have pain in my knee. It's something I have to get used to. It takes time to get used to it."

Cain is philosophical about her plight. At least there's a chance of playing. Teammate Cait McMahan, Cain's rehab partner last season, decided earlier this month to forgo playing and become a student assistant.

"It definitely makes me more grateful that I'm still able to play,'' Cain said. "Because it's unfortunate that (Cait) can't, that kind of makes me want to play for her."

Cain also has maintained her sense of humor. She has a new rehab partner in Vicki Baugh, who's been recovering from a left knee sprain and is doubtful to play tonight.

"She feels like we're tag-teaming it,'' Cain said. "Once she gets back, I'm out. Or once I get back, she's out. That's what it seems like it's been."

UT coach Pat Summitt is patient, even though she's had glimpses of Cain's potential impact on the Lady Vols' post play.

"I think that Kelley already has demonstrated a toughness,'' Summitt said. "She's played with pain . . . it just takes time. You can't fast-forward it. You have to deal with it."

I just wonder if these injuries are more mental than physical. I know Amber Gray has been getting called out for pulling herself out of practices multiple times for various "injuries". Players these days need to realize that "hurt" doesn't mean "injured". You have to play through it sometimes. Gray, for example, isn't playing much because she's out of shape and needs the conditioning. I understand Baugh and Cain with the ACL recoveries, but at some point you just have to stop worrying about it or thinking about the pain and play through it. They only get 1 college career.

WOW We could use her on the boards and blocking in the middle..only if she is 100%..

We're going to need ALL the Ladies to make a run in March. Here's hoping that everyone that CAN be healthy by then, actually IS healthy. Go Lady Vols!

Shekeena and Glory are in good shape...the other young ladies are skilled athletes but need to get stronger and to work on quickness and endurance. If they get in shape it would be hard for anyone to beat them.

UCONN always has athletes that can run the floor and generally outquick everyone.

With Cait opting to be a student assistant doesnt this open the opportunity to go after one more recuit like a # 2 Kelsey Bone? She has not signed with anyone yet and this would be a nice addition at 6'5 with Kelly not fully healthy . Can you imagine having them both next year? We are gonna need as many weapons possible against teams with the likes of Maya Moore and Brittney Griner going to Baylor. Anyway cant wait to see our baby lady Vols Sunday against Auburn which is going to be a defining game midway through the season. Ill be down there to support our BIG ORANGE!!!

I suspect this one is a pick 'em game. I'll take the Lady Vols 66-65 over the Lady Hogs for 15 in a row. Hopefully we wear them down because they only go six deep.

Our backcourt should be able to shoot with ease over theirs and get good looks at the rim. But we need to feed the post!!! Harris and Jones are foul-prone and so is Brereton. If we can get them in trouble early with some quick calls the game won't be so close.

Having Vicki and Kelley back in the lineup for just a few minutes will be huge. Bjork, Kinna, Glory and Brew ALL need solid if not strong games tonight.

This is huge....we really need Cain in the lineup.

I hope everyone will be patient with Kelley's rehab. Coming back from knee reconstruction is NO JOKE, even with today's vastly improved surgical and rehab practices. The LAST thing Kelley needs is to be rushed back too soon; we surely don't want her to end up like poor Cait! One must wonder if maybe Cait didn't try to do too much on her own to recover, to the point that she was actually hurting herself. It's great to be competitive and hungry to get back, but another to ignore what pain is telling the body. Amber seems to be in a different category. She hasn't had a major injury that I am aware of; she would seem to be a classic case of not being able to distinguish, as someone said above, between "playing hurt" and "playing injured".

I WISH KELLY AN VICKI TO COME BACK WHEN THEY ARE STRONG ENOUGH. WE ARE GETTING BY SO FAR SO GOOD WITH THEM TAKING TIME TO HEAL. I HOPE THAT THEY WILL BE READY BEFORE TOURNAMENT TIME BUT IF NOT AT LEAST THEY SHOULD BE GOOD TO GO BY TOURNAMENT TIME. I THINK ALEX AN GLORY AN BREWER NEEDS TO STEP UP IN THE POST AN BE MONSTERS DOWN THERE UNTIL THESE LADIES ARE ABLE TO COME BACK. I WISH YOU ALL GOOD HEALTH AN MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU LADIES SO GET HEALTHY AN KEEP GOD IN YOUR PRAYERS. GOOD LUCK THE REST OF THE WAY.
